SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Border Patrol agents and San Diego Police are at the scene of a possible suspicious device in Otay Mesa, officers confirmed Wednesday.Police said they got a call from Border Patrol about 3 p.m. telling them about a possible threat in a vehicle in a tow yard on the 9000 block of Airway Road.The vehicle had been seized during a drug smuggling investigation, police said.San Diego officers sent canine units to the scene and helped establish a perimeter.California Highway Patrol closed one lane on eastbound I-905 exiting onto SR-125. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Children in San Diego could soon go without food if the federal government doesn't extend waivers put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic. The San Diego Unified School District is warning about that possibility after the U.S. Department of Agriculture ended supplemental food support for local families. The changes are expected at the end of September. The USDA decided they would end the supplemental support during the pandemic. After Sept. 30, families will be required to verify identification, proof of school attendance and eligibility to quality for the free family meals. These things were waived in March because of the pandemic. SD Unified officials say the USDA hasn't responded to their request to extend the waivers. District officials are taking steps to try and fill in the gaps by working with partners like the San Diego Food Bank and Feeding San Diego. The district also announced triple the distribution sites, up from 28 to 82. Students or their parents/guardians who qualify for subsidized meals can drive through or walk up to receive breakfast and lunch, Monday through Friday, from noon to 2 p.m. during the 2020-21 school year, which begins on Aug. 31.The district is also offering assistance to any family that needs help completing the required forms. The district says they have distributed more than 4 million meals to students since March. They say these meals are often the only quality meal they receive. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities are investigating after an inmate died at the George Bailey Detention Facility. According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were notified that an inmate identified as 63-year-old Dennis Lee Curry needed medical help inside his cell on May 11. Deputies say when they arrived, Curry complained of pain to his head and chest, but had no visible injuries. Curry was taken to a local hospital where his condition worsened and he was placed on life support before he died on the morning of May 13. Following an autopsy, it was discovered that Curry died of natural causes. The Sheriff’s Department’s homicide unit was called in to investigate, as they do with all in-custody deaths. Curry was in custody for outstanding warrants related to prior DUI and drug-related charges, according to the department. 860

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Chula Vista City Councilman Steve Padilla, who last week announced he contracted coronavirus, has been hospitalized at UCSD Medical Center after experiencing difficulty breathing, his family announced Thursday.Ashleigh Padilla, Padilla's daughter, said her father "was admitted to UCSD Thornton Hospital ICU where he is receiving additional treatment, including a respirator to aid with difficulty breathing associated with COVID-19."“I know his amazing doctors and nurses are doing everything they can to send him home healthy when this is all over," said Ashleigh Padilla.No further details about his condition were given at this time, but Padilla did issue a warning to the public through his daughter.“My father asked me to pass on a message: Everyone needs to take COVID-19 seriously. Please follow the advice of our public health professionals to reduce spread of the virus and take precautions to keep your families and our community safe," said Ashleigh Padilla.Padilla, who represents Chula Vista's District 3, made the announcement in video last Saturday that was published on his Facebook page."After recently experiencing symptoms, I was diagnosed as being positive for the COVID-19 virus, also known as the coronavirus," he said last Saturday.Padilla appeared in the video to be in good spirits as he told viewers that he was doing "very well" and "feeling well."In a follow up statement later that night, he described having a fever, body aches, headaches, chills, that "came on very rapidly." He noted he had come into contact with friends, colleagues, and the public over the last week."I’m in close coordination with County Public Health officials who are taking all precautions to ensure the health of people I’ve been in contact with," he said.Padilla previously served as Mayor of Chula Vista from 2002-2006, and is a former officer and detective with the Chula Vista Police Department.On the Chula Vista city website, Padilla is noted for being the first person of color ever elected to City office in Chula Vista history, the first Latino Mayor, and the first openly LGBT person to serve or be elected to city office. 2167

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As Santa Ana winds move out of the region, a freeze warning was issued for portions of San Diego County.The National Weather Service issued a freeze warning for the county's valleys and deserts from midnight through 10 a.m. Friday.
