SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Brendan Watters had big plans for Ballast Point the moment his company took control March 2. That includes creating new beers, and driving a wrapped bus around San Diego for two months announcing that the iconic craft brewery was back under local control. All of that hit a snag two days after sale closed, when Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a State of Emergency because of the coronavirus outbreak. "So basically a week after we were closing up operations," said Watters, the brewery's CEO, who moved to San Diego after the sale. "We had to pivot straight away."Watters' company, Kings and Convicts, bought Ballast Point from Constellation Brands, a Fortune-500 beverage company that paid billion for the San Diego brewer in 2015. Watters declined to disclose the sale price, but did confirm it was less than billion. He said Ballast Point, which launched in San Diego in 1996, lost some of its local charm under an international brand. He says he plans to bring that back, with two new beers launching this summer and an emphasis on design, such as the famous oceanic art that accompanies each one. Still, he faced an unprecedented challenge two days after closing. The tap rooms all shut down, eviscerating 50 percent of its revenue (Watters estimates total revenue fell as much as 60 percent). Watters says the brewery focused on its distribution, and was aided by a federal stimulus loan. Now, the Miramar and Little Italy tasting rooms are reopening with social distancing alterations, such as spaced out tables, and smartphone ordering systems. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Coaster service through San Diego County will be unavailable for two weekends this month.To give crews time to complete infrastructure improvements along the rail corridor, North County Transit District announced Coaster service from Oct. 19-20 and 26-27 would be shut down.On Fridays before the closures, southbound Amtrak R2R trains A792 and A796 will make their trips to Santa Fe Depot, but Amtrak train A590 will stop at Oceanside Transit Center.During the service shut down, Amtrak Pacific Surfliner and Metrolink will not provide service to Oceanside Transit Center. Trips on connecting buses will need an Amtrak reservation. Amtrak bus services will also need an Amtrak reservation. Rail 2 Rail passes are not eligible.Bus service connecting Coaster stations will not be available, but some passengers may have BREEZE Route 101 or MTS connections available.While no passenger rail service will operate on the corridor during these times, other vehicles and equipment will be in use. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Consumer prices rose by nearly four percent in San Diego over the last year largely due to an increase in the cost of gasoline, according to a new report by the U.S. Department of Labor. According to the report, prices in the San Diego area rose 3.8 percent over the last 12 months and 1 percent over the last two months. The largest increases stem from household furnishings and operations and housing, which rose by 9.3 and 5.2 percent over the last year. The report points out that an increase in prices for food and energy over the last two months was fueled by higher gas prices. The energy index jumped 11.4 percent over the last two months mainly due to higher gas prices, according to the report. Over the last year, food from home increased by more than 2 percent while food away from home actually decreased by 0.4 percent. California's gas tax will jump by another 5.6 cents per gallon on July 1, 2019. Although the report may seem discouraging, the cost increases were at least partially offset by a 1.1 percent price decline in education and communication. The report shows that items like cereal and baked goods were up by nearly 2 percent from May of 2018 to March of 2019. Apparel was up by more than 6 percent from May of 2018 to March of 2019. Milk and dairy products also rose by 2 percent in the same time period. Consumer prices increased in a similar way in neighboring Los Angeles. Over the last year, prices in Los Angeles rose by more than three percent, but May only saw prices rise by 0.2 percent. The report shows that the cost of household goods and operations rose by nearly 6 percent while housing jumped 4.4 percent. In the west as a whole, consumer prices rose by nearly 3 percent while increasing by 0.5 percent in May. "We have over 100,000 jobs that are dependent upon trade with Mexico.”Faulconer said the goal is to create a safe, secure and functioning border.
