SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Just a few hours, and a few miles apart, San Diego Mayoral candidates Todd Gloria and Barbary Bry launched their final push for the upcoming election.A recent ABC 10News/Union-Tribune Survey USA poll shows a statistical dead-heat between the two candidates, with Gloria holding a slim 39-38% advantage over Bry. But that same poll also shows 24% of voters are still undecided."It's in times like these you want to be in the fight," Gloria said while holding an event outside of his campaign headquarters.Gloria spent the morning surrounded by the Local 145 Firefighters Union, as well as County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher and Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It could take more than three weeks for out-of-work Californians to get unemployment insurance payments.The California Employment Development Department (EDD) tells 10News, during normal circumstances, an Unemployment Insurance (UI) claim takes approximately 21 days from filing to payment.Right now, the circumstances in California are anything but normal.According to a report from the state's Legislative Analyst's Office, "Given the extraordinary number of applications received recently, as well as the expectation that claims will continue to increase over the coming weeks, the Legislature should anticipate that first benefit payments will take much longer than 21 days."The report states similar delays occurred in the Great Recession. EDD tells 10News they are currently experiencing a large increase in claims filed in their programs and have staff working overtime to keep up with the demand."Given the unprecedented increase in UI claims due to COVID-19, we have taken several steps — working around the clock, including Saturdays and Sundays, and redirecting hundreds of staff to process UI claims — to ensure every Californian gets benefits as timely as possible. We do not expect any significant delays at this time. Should the situation change, and delays arise, we will notify the Governor's office, stakeholders, and the public as soon as possible," an EDD spokesperson told 10News."We're seeing impacts higher than what we saw at the Great Recession," said Andrew Picard with the San Diego Workforce Partnership.This week the organization put out a report on potential impacts of COVID-19 on employment in San Diego County.The report stated, "In the first three days of partial closures (March 16-18), Californians submitted 190,000 unemployment insurance claims — more than quadruple the weekly average — and the March 19 statewide order to shelter in place will bring more layoffs."Between March 16 to 22, the Workforce Partnership received notices or phone calls from 52 employers that are considering or have executed layoffs or work-hour reductions for a total of 3,865 impacted workers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's already been one year since the San Diego Zoo Safari Park saw the first southern white rhino born through artificial insemination arrive at its park.Edward turned one-year-old on July 28, celebrating with a party at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s Nikita Kahn Rhino Rescue Center with his mother Victoria, 8-month-old female calf Future, and her mother Amani."Even though he doesn’t know it’s his birthday, it is very special to see Edward – a healthy, robust rhino - running around, enjoying his special treats," said Barbara Durrant, director of Reproductive Sciences at San Diego Zoo Global. "We aren’t just celebrating his birthday but also are celebrating the significance of his birth."Edward was born last year after hormone-induced ovulation and artificial insemination with frozen semen from southern white rhino Maoto on March 22, 2018. Victoria gave birth 16 months later. Edward's birth was the zoo's first successful attempt to birth a southern white rhino via artificial insemination and a critical step toward recovering its distant cousin, the northern white rhino. Currently, only two northern white rhinos exist in the world and both are female.Researchers believe that a northern white rhino calf could be born from artificial insemination within 10 to 20 years. 1313

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – It's exploding in the wellness industry, but is CBD safe? 10News visited a San Diego lab that tested CBD products for ingredients like pesticides and heavy metals. The results were surprising to lab personnel. Shelby Huffaker is the lead cannabis educator at Torrey Holistics in Sorrento Valley. The licensed dispensary recently conducted its own CBD study to show customers just how unreliable the open market can be. "We collected about a dozen different products from various locations around San Diego and also on the internet," she tells 10News. Torrey Holistics collected samples from places like farmers' markets, grocery stores, and the internet. The company bought CBD products such as lip balms, caramels, creams, and bath bombs, then sent to San Diego's Infinite Chemical Analysis Labs. "It's pretty busy right now with it being harvest time," says David Marelius, Ph.D. He's the co-founder of Infinite Chemical Analysis Labs, which tests cannabis and related products. "People are definitely trying to take advantage of the CBD boom right now," he adds. Both CBD and THC come from the cannabis plant, but CBD does not have the psychoactive properties that give you the feeling of being high. CBD received praised for claims of health benefits like reducing anxiety and inflammation. According to Infinite Chemical Analysis Labs, none of the CBD samples purchased on the internet by Torrey Holistics had any CBD in them. Dr. Marelius tells 10News that the majority of the overall samples didn't meet their packaging claims. He adds that the products' potencies were off, and one product had almost 70% less CBD in it than what it advertised. Three of the products reportedly failed for pesticides, although the levels were so low that they likely weren't harmful. "It's kind of the wild west out there," says Sally Greenberg with the National Consumers League. Greenberg tells 10News that CBD sellers often exaggerate the benefits of CBD without having the science to back up the claims. "[They say] that they cure cancer or treat Alzheimer's or treat AIDS," she adds. The National Consumers League is advocating for federal oversight from the Food and Drug Administration, which currently doesn't regulate most CBD. In California, the Bureau of Cannabis Control tests CBD that's sold in licensed dispensaries, like Torrey Holistics. "You're going to want to look for a Batch number or UID number. That ensures that we're able to match the testing results with that specific product," says Huffaker. The dispensary is hoping that the lab results will highlight the importance of researching your CBD before buying. "Everything carried in a licensed cannabis store is going to have to be verified [and] vetted by the dispensary [to be sure] it has gone through the necessary testing," adds Huffaker.
