BEIJING, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- The winning of Ma Ying-jeou and Kuomintang (KMT) in Saturday's elections may open new chances for the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations. The results of the elections have indicated that the peaceful development of the cross-Strait relations is a correct path and has been widely recognized by the Taiwan people.Any persons and any political parties of Taiwan should follow this trend, so that they could earn recognition and support. Moreover, the victory of Ma and the KMT may represent a new opportunity for the development of the cross-Strait relations. With joint efforts of the two sides to fortify and enhance the existing mutual trust, there will be a even brighter prospect and further progresses in the cross-Strait talks, exchanges and cooperation. However, the two sides should be wary that the situation in the island is still complicated and the "Taiwan independence" stance will continue to haunt the cross-Strait relations development. There are still some long-term disputes and divergences existing between the two sides that await resolving. This year's elections were carried out under a background in which the cross-Strait relations have been significantly improved. The positive effects of the peaceful development of the cross-Strait relations have fully emerged.Over the past four years, the two sides of the Taiwan Strait have established a political mutual trust based on opposition to the "Taiwan independence" stance and adherence to the "1992 Consensus."The two sides resumed regular talks between the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) and the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) in 2008.The opening of "three direct links" of cross-Strait mail, trade, air and shipping services, has also pushed forward the cross-Strait economic cooperation into a brand-new stage. These achievements have brought about real benefits to the people on both sides of the Strait, especially the people in Taiwan. The cross-Strait economic cooperation has also helped the island's economy to buoy up from blows of the global financial crisis. The peaceful development of the cross-Strait ties have won a widespread support among the Taiwan people and it is also appreciated by the international community.During the election campaigns, whether to stick to the 1992 Consensus became a major field of cross fires among candidates. Ma had stood out and gained positive momentum with his cross-Strait policies.Numbers of Taiwanese notables, business tycoons as well as the small and medium-sized enterprise owners and the grassroots people have also expressed their stance for the "1992 Consensus" and their aspiration for further peaceful development of the cross-Strait ties.Under the public's pressure, the Democratic Progressive Party and its candidate Tsai Ing-wen have to lower their voices for "Taiwan independence."But their denial of the "1992 Consensus" and the stance of "one country on each side" could not abate the people's doubts and worries and finally led to their failure in the elections.Judged from the election, peaceful development of cross-Strait relations have developed from a concept to reality, benefitting people from different backgrounds and recognized by the public.
BEIJING, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- China has established an operation committee for management of the country's first space lab module, Tiangong-1, during its two-year orbit of earth. The committee will deal with operations planning, technical appraisal and flight control of the target orbiter after the unmanned Shenzhou-8 spacecraft returns to earth after its mission, the official website of China's manned space program said. The Tiangong-1 space lab module was launched on Sept. 29 and docked with Shenzhou-8 precisely on Nov. 3, China's first ever space docking attempt. The second docking between Tiangong-1 and Shenzhou-8 is scheduled for Nov. 14.The manned space program said earlier that the same target orbiter Tiangong-1 will accommodate another two docking missions performed by two other Shenzhou spaceships, at least one of which will be manned. The 8.5-tonne Tiangong-1 is the first space lab module that China has built, and the committee will also be the first in taking care of a long-running space asset. The operation committee for Tiangong-1 heralds China's manned space program entering a new phase for lengthy flight missions, Niu Hongguang, director of the operation committee, said on the website www.cmse.gov.cn.The orbiting module management will include taking care of the space lab, making preparations for any further docking tests and gathering experience for building a future space station, Niu said.
LOS ANGELES, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- An organizer of the World Stem Cell Summit says one of the key problems medical researchers face these days is how to apply their findings in the real world."How do you take the phenomenal scientific research going on in labs and translate it into medical treatments,?" said Bernie Siegel, the founder and co-chair of the summit and executive director of the Genetic Policy Institute, which organized the event."It's a big job to do this, and more than just the science," Siegel said, noting that in a growing field now moving beyond basic lab research, the aim is to connect the people who do the work with those who finance it.The three-day summit, which opened Monday in Pasadena, features more than 150 top international speakers and 50 hours of programming with leaders from science, pharmaceutics, business, policy, ethics, law and other fields. The cell therapy industry, a "nascent" field, has emerged to be a potentially multi-billion business with unlimited potential, Siegel said.Stephen Dalton, a University of Georgia professor, reported that one of the biggest developments in stem cell research in the past year was the realization that cells can be transdifferentiated from one state to another without returning to a pluripotent state.Dalton said the principle was previously supported by a few isolated examples but it was not until 2010 that the idea was widely accepted.Mark Sussman, a professor from San Diego State University, called the identification of lung stem cells from human tissue samples capable of regenerating the highly complex and specialized structures of mature lungs a breakthrough in lung biology and regenerative medicine. He said results presented by the Anversa group in the New England Journal of Medicine demonstrate that human lung stem cells can be expanded in vitro and also retain the capacity to integrate into adult tissue upon introduction into mice. The study, Sussman said, has opened up an entirely new field of possibilities for lung regeneration and potential therapeutic applications for many conditions where treatment options are either very limited or nonexistent.
WELLINGTON, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Parents wanting to help their children avoid asthma and other allergies are being told to give their toys a frosty reception by sticking them in the freezer.Medical scientists in New Zealand and Taiwan have discovered that freezing children's soft toys can kill almost all house dust mites (HDMs), the microscopic bugs associated with a range of allergies, including asthma.Other effective remedies for killing HDMs, commonly found in children's soft toys, were tumble drying and washing with eucalyptus oil and detergent, the scientists from New Zealand's University of Otago and Taiwan's Changhua Christian Hospital found.HDMs were strongly associated with the development of asthma in children, and the severity of asthma was in proportion to the number of house dust mites a child was exposed to when sleeping with soft toys, said a statement from the university Monday."Children frequently sleep with their favorite toys close to their airways and this may be important for HDM-sensitized asthmatic children," said University of Otago Associate Professor Rob Siebers. The scientists tested the three different cleaning methods on 36 toys divided into three groups of 12.Freezing toys for at least 16 hours at minus 15 degrees centigrade resulted in a 95-percent reduction of HDMs, as did soaking in an emulsion of eucalyptus oil and liquid detergent for one hour before rinsing and drying.Hot tumble drying for one hour reduced mites by 89 percent, the study found."Washing and soaking with eucalyptus oil and detergent is very effective in not only reducing live mites, but also reducing house dust mite allergens, compared to freezing and tumble drying," said Siebers.Ten of the 12 toys cleaned this way showed no live mites at all.Siebers said all three methods were more effective than just washing toys, because water needed to be above 55 degrees centigrade to kill HDMs, but this usually damaged the toys."My advice for parents is to either tumble dry for one hour, or freeze the soft toy overnight, and then wash it in a cold wash to remove any allergens."Siebers said the thickness of the material used in making the toys could alter the effectiveness of the three methods. The scientists would conduct further research to determine how quickly HDMs recolonized soft toys and how often toys should be treated. The study has been published in the European journal, Paediatric Allergy and Immunology.
BEIJING, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese authorities broke up more than 1,800 dens that made or sold counterfeit drugs in cases that involved 3.35 billion yuan (530 million U.S. dollars) in a two-year crackdown, according to the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA).During the campaign, 13 government departments mobilized more than one million law enforcement workers to combat the sale of fake drugs via online advertising or consignment, seizing more than 5,000 kinds of illegal products, said SFDA deputy head Bian Zhenjia Thursday at a meeting.According to Bian, the action also targeted malpractice during the manufacturing process as well as selling non-pharmaceutical products as drugs. In the operation, authorities conducted more than 28,000 on-site inspections in medicine production factories and halted the production of 98 varieties of drugs, Bian said. However, Bian noted that problems still exist, including rampant illegal drug advertising and online sales of fake drugs, improper manufacturing practices and outdated laws and regulations concerning drug safety.Bian said the SFDA will continue to cooperate with other government departments and step up supervision and crackdowns on the online sale of fake drugs.
