SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — At Fleet Week, the Osprey MV-22 is on display, on the USS Harper's Ferry's flight deck, a controversial aircraft after dozens died during training. Crews say now it's much safer. The unique aircraft transforms from a helicopter to a plane mid-flight. The trouble, four crashes killed 30 people during training missions from 1991-2000."Most every system on that aircraft has a triple redundant system, so that if there is a failure the other two systems pick up the slack," Corporal Tyler Gartin said. Over the years, the advanced, one-of-a-kind system has been constantly updated, making safety a priority.RELATED: Fleet Week San Diego brings hands-on experiences to publicThe Marines onboard the USS Harper's Ferry say it's indispensable."We can land it anywhere we want to just like a helicopter, but then we have that extreme range of an aircraft," Captain Vinnie Gallo with the US Marine Corps said they can refuel while flying, extending the range exponentially.Another quality setting this bird apart, speed. "Basically it's going to suck you back into your seat, and everyone in the back is going to feel that, get pulled to the side. It's a pretty good force, feels like a sports car," Gallo said.RELATED: Honor Flight San Diego: Military veterans take off for 'Tour of Honor'Both Gallo and Gartin say the technological updates make the aircraft safe, and they're not concerned when they take her up."There was a tragedy out in Kumamoto, a terrible earthquake, a lot of people were stranded, injured and didn't have a whole lot of supplies," Gartin said he was in Japan for the relief effort. "The Osprey was able to land in places that other aircraft were not able to, and carry out a much higher payload than any other helicopter possibly could have. So it was absolutely indispensable."Some in the military still don't trust this bird, "just because of the fact that some people still don't like riding roller coasters and that aircraft right there is a rollercoaster," Gartin said.RELATED: Coronado residents worried about noise from new Navy planesYou can check out the Osprey and ask any questions of the crew anytime during Fleet Week Saturday, or Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.For more information about events or how to donate to Fleet Week, visit fleetweeksandiego.org. 2452

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Wells Fargo Bank officials are offering a ,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for robbing three San Diego-area banks. The string of robberies started September 11 at the Wells Fargo Bank, located at 5522 Balboa Avenue in Clairemont, followed by a second theft October 6 at the branch located at 276 N. El Camino Real in Encinitas. In a release, FBI and the San Diego Violent Crimes Task Force officials said they believe that the same individual, described as a white male in his 50s-60s, is responsible for both robberies."In each robbery, the robber approached the teller and presented a note demanding money from the bank in a similar manner," said FBI special agent Davene Butler.Images from those robberies show the suspect wearing a hat and sunglasses. Each time, the robber was provided a sum of cash and departed the bank on foot, Butler said. 946

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two people were found dead Sunday morning after authorities responded to multiple 911 calls of a capsized boat off the coast of Ocean Beach.Authorities received a call about the incident around 3:30 a.m. When they arrived, authorities found a 28-foot vessel overturned along the shore with two mean deceased nearby."About a 28 foot vessel overturned in the shore, on the sand," says SD Fire & Rescue Lt. Maureen Hodges. "We do have two victims that were down on the sand."The incident happened shortly after 3:30 Sunday morning. Customs and Border Protection officers told ABC 10News the boat capsized off the shore, throwing the two people into the water. There's still no word on if any other people were in the boat.Border Patrol also responded to the incident along with San Diego Police, lifeguards, and San Diego Fire-Rescue. CBP believes this is the latest incident to involve a human-smuggling effort gone horribly wrong. So far in the 2020 Fiscal Year, there have been 210 incidents involving these kind of "panga" boats off the coast of San Diego. The record was set in 2013, when CBP responded to 243 such incidents. With two months left in the fiscal year, 2020 is on pace to break the record.ABC 10News asked if the rise in panga boat incidents could be related to border closures because of the coronavirus, forcing would-be smugglers to turn to the water. CBP officials won't speculate on an official reason. The search continues for anyone else who may have been on the boat. They ask anyone with information about Sunday morning's incident, or any others, to call 619-278-7031. 1622

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It’s not easy to break into San Diego’s housing market, but what happens when you finally make that big purchase? Zillow and Thumbtack ranked San Diego third in the nation for the hidden costs of homeownership. The housing analysts broke down the expenses of maintaining a home in addition to a down payment and monthly mortgage payments. Unavoidable costs, including property taxes, insurance and utilities, were a factor, along with routine maintenance. In San Diego, the hidden costs amounted to ,257 a year, with unavoidable expenses of ,087 and maintenance at ,170.RELATED: Nearly 1K?salary needed to buy San Diego homeThe national average for the hidden costs of homeownership was ,390. In San Jose, the figure reached ,655. San Francisco was slightly lower at ,758. Indianapolis was the cheapest city in the nation, with ,220 going toward hidden costs.“Ongoing maintenance costs and annual fees are some of the most common surprises for first-time home buyers after they finally become homeowners. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With the demolition of SDCCU Stadium underway, much of the talk has been about how to buy the seats. But there's a lot more that could go at a fraction of the price.San Diego State University will auction off hundreds of mementos from the stadium in December, including a variety of signage -- from seats to parking lot -- and heavy duty equipment, such as electric carts and automotive lifts. Starting bids range from to . Heritage Global Partners will be handling the auction, which runs online from Dec. 14 to Dec. 16. Pre-registration is available now.“Unfortunately we can't save the stadium, that's bigger than us, but we can save a piece of it for you," said Tim Shaeffer, Director of Business Development at Heritage Global Partners. Fans can buy 15-inch-by-15-inch signs that directed fans to their sections. Of note, a Section 55 stadium sign designed to honor Chargers great Junior Seau, starting bid .Buyers pay 7.75 percent sales tax as well as an 18 percent fee on purchases. Items can be picked up the week after the auction, so buyers can have them before the Holidays. SDSU has also announced that seats from SDCCU Stadium will go on sale to the general public at 9 a.m Dec. 1. Buyers must purchase two because they share arm wrests and do not stand on their own. A general public price has still not been announced, but similar sales have been in the 0 to 0 range for a pair, the university says. The seats cost 9 in a presale to Aztec Club members.Proceeds from seat sales will be re-invested into the project to build a 35,000-seat stadium for the Aztecs. Construction is underway in the SDCCU Stadium parking lot, with scheduled opening in 2022. 1714
