JAPATUL VALLEY (CNS) -- Firefighters today worked toward full containment on the smoldering remains of the Valley Fire, which was 87% contained after blackening 17,665 acres in rural eastern San Diego County, authorities said."Fire activity was minimal overnight as firefighters continue to mop up hot spots and secure the fire perimeter," according to a U.S. Forest Service news statement. "Structure defense remains a priority for values at risk. Every day the fire stays within its current perimeter, the threat to the adjacent communities continues to diminish. (CNS) - A 63-year-old man died after crashing his pickup into a tree at an RV park near Julian, authorities said Wednesday.The crash happened about 6:40 p.m. Tuesday on KQ Ranch Road in the KQ Ranch RV resort, off state Route 79, California Highway Patrol Officer Travis Garrow said.The victim was driving a 2013 Ford F-150 pickup eastbound when, for unknown reasons, he drove off the north side of the road and slammed into a tree, Garrow said.Witnesses attempted to help the driver until medics arrived, but the man was pronounced dead before he could be airlifted to a hospital, the officer said.The driver's name was withheld pending family notification.Investigators determined that alcohol and/or drugs were suspected factors in the crash and the man was not wearing a seatbelt, Garrow said. 820

Just before noon Saturday, a team of volunteer rescued climbers with Portland Mountain Rescue made contact with a 35-year-old injured climber who fell several hundred feet near Hogsback Ridge.Rescuers verified that the climber was in serious but stable condition. A helicopter with the Oregon Army National Guard was unable to reach the patient because of high winds.The helicopter returned to the mountain, still battling extremely dangerous winds, was able to drop of a National Guard Medic on the mountain to tend to the patient.The helicopter was forced to return to the Portland-area to refuel, but once again returned to once again try and evacuate the patient.The decision was made to transport the patient with a snowcat to a lower elevation.At approximately 7:45 p.m., the rescue crew that was with the patient was able to safely get the patient to Timberline Lodge parking lot where the Air Medic Evacuation Unit was waiting to transport the him to the hospital.The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office would like to extend a sincere thank you to our partners who assisted in the search and rescue effort: Portland Mountain Rescue, American Medical Response Reach and Treat, Hood River Crag Rats, Mountain Wave Search and Rescue, and the Oregon Army National Guard. 1280

At the start of the pandemic, nine months ago, most experts were optimistic and agreed that the U.S. had a strong shot at seeing a fast V-shaped recovery.“We can turn this around this year. I still think there’s real hope for that,” Todd McCracken, with the Small Business Association, said in March.Even with some required government shutdowns, most experts believed the U.S. would most likely see a U-shaped recovery. That means things would pick up a little slower, but it would still be considered a relatively fast rebound.“There was also the L, which meant we were going to go down to the bottom and no one knew where we were going to go, and then there was the W, which meant we were going to go down and then we were going to come up, and actually, that is pretty much what is happening,” said Jonathan Drapkin, president and CEO of the Hudson Valley Pattern for Progress.Drapkin pointed out the other and more dreaded “W” or “L” scenarios experts feared back in March appear to be more in line with what the U.S. is actually experiencing now.“It’s definitely more of an L, said Elise Gould, an economist with the Economic Policy Institute.“Personally, I think any hope for a quick recovery has gone by the wayside.
