Construction began in February 1967 and two years later, then-California Gov. Ronald Reagan ushered in the iconic structure as the first person to cross over it.Instantly, it changed how San Diegans commuted, mostly replacing ferry service used to cross San Diego Bay for 83 years.The bridge's iconic curve across the bay reaches 200 feet at its highest point, allowing an aircraft carrier to pass underneath its five lanes.Just a few years after the bridge debuted, the Coronado Cays, Coronado Hospital, and Coronado Shores condo community opened and Richard Nixon hosted the first state dinner held outside of the White House at Hotel del Coronado. Not only was the bridge a vital asset to the military facilities on Coronado but also the residents -- on and off the island.Coronado City Councilman Bill Sandke said, “This bridge is an icon around San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police released details Friday about the controversial arrest of a man and woman in Chicano Park involving use of force. Georgina Mercado, 35, interfered with a traffic stop being conducted Thursday, police said. Her three children, ages eight, seven, and four, were with her at the time. 22-year-old Eddie Alvarez arrived on scene with another woman who said they would take custody of the three children, according to SDPD Lt. Shawn Takeuchi. Alvarez wore a bandana over his face and refused to identify himself, police said. Officers “could not release the children to the custody of Alvarez without knowing who he was,” said police. “This contact escalated to the point that officers arrested Alvarez for interfering,” Takeuchi wrote in a news release. Police said Alvarez refused to put his hands behind his back and struggled with officers. “Officers used strikes while they forcefully moved his arms behind his back,” police said. Alvarez was handcuffed and taken to jail. “Anytime force is used, we take it extremely seriously. We have initiated an internal investigation into the force that was used last night,” Takeuchi said. Hours after the arrest, dozens of people gathered outside the San Diego Central Jail downtown to demand Alvarez’ release. The group said Alvarez had been recording the arrest of Mercado, who they described as a community activist. One demonstrator said, “While he (Alvarez) was filming police, they came out and told him to stop recording. He said, ‘No, I don’t feel safe, I’m going to keep recording, especially with my girlfriend right here with the kids,’ and they didn’t like that … The cops ended up jumping him and rushed him to the ground and started punching him in the ribs. He wasn’t resisting whatsoever.” Alvarez is a member of the activist group Brown Berets of Aztlan, City News Service reported. He was booked on suspicion of felony obstructing or resisting an officer, and a misdemeanor count of resisting an officer. He was being held on ,000 bail. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Students and staff at Morse High School may have been exposed to tuberculosis, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency. According to the agency, the periods of exposure were from June 17 to July 26 during summer school, then again from August 26 to September 10. Health officials and the San Diego Unified School District are working to notify those who may have been exposed. Testing will be provided on September 24 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Morse High School for students identified as potentially exposed. The district is providing testing to staff who may have been exposed. Tuberculosis is transmitted from person to person through indoor air during prolonged contact with someone who is infected. “It is important that we identify those who have had prolonged close contact in an enclosed space with the TB case and test them since the initial infection usually has no symptoms,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “Early diagnosis and prompt treatment can prevent the infectious form of the disease.”Symptoms of TB include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego veterans from WWII and the Korean War are getting ready for a special trip. This weekend they'll board an Honor Flight to Washington D.C.10News is getting exclusive access to the trip and was at Honor Flight San Diego's last planning meeting before the special weekend gets off the ground. David Smith, Founder of Honor Flight San Diego, says it's incredibly important to thank our veterans while there's still time. The oldest veteran on this weekend's flight will be 99-years-old. "I've actually had veterans come up to me and say, 'ya know, in all these years no one has ever said thank you to me - this means so much'," said Smith.The group relies on fundraising to make the honor flight a reality - it costs 0,000 for the entire weekend.Our coverage of the Honor Flight continues Friday morning when Reporter Amanda Brandeis boards the plane with the veterans and will continue through Sunday when they all return to San Diego. Honor Flight San Diego welcomes the community to join the Sunday's homecoming at the San Diego International Airport. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University reported at least 13 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday. The total of positive cases among students since the first day of school is now up to 20. The university says the most of the students that tested positive live off campus. Only three of the students were living on campus. Two of the students are in isolation on campus. The third student is isolating somewhere else. In a letter sent out to staff and students, school officials say the majority of the students didn't interact with any SDSU employees or go to any of the shared campus spaces. One student did briefly visit the school bookstore. San Diego State started the school year on Aug. 24, mostly with online classes. There are 2,600 students living on campus. County officials confirm they have started outbreak investigations and are working closely with the school. Over the weekend, SDSU announced they had hired security to patrol the campus from Thursday to Sunday, after hours, to monitor for any COVID-19 violations on campus. Students told ABC 10News they think the school is doing the best they can in response to COVID-19. They say they are more concerned about things in housing off campus.
