LOS ANGELES – The man who reportedly attacked an 86-year-old woman while she was out shopping in Koreatown has been arrested. Richard Rene Colomo, 41 (pictured below), was re-arrested Tuesday after being released earlier in February pending further investigation.Colomo is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday on one felony count of elder or dependent adult abuse with infliction of injury. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Malik B, a rapper and founding member of The Roots, has died. He was 47. The group announced the death of the Philadelphia-based emcee in a social media post on Wednesday. The cause of death has not been released. Malik B, whose real name is Malik Abdul Basit, was a major contributor to the group, which includes Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson and Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities believe rising rapper Pop Smoke was shot and killed during a Los Angeles home-invasion robbery in February after his social media posts led five suspects to the house he was renting. Police arrested the suspects Thursday morning in Los Angeles. Pop Smoke's legal name is Bashar Barakah Jackson. Police had initially discounted a robbery theory in the days after the 20-year-old New York rapper's death Feb. 19 at a home in the Hollywood Hills. Now, authorities say the group likely went to the home because they knew Pop Smoke was there from the social media posts. 604

LONDON — Trucks waiting to get out of Britain are backing up for miles and people are stranded at airports as many countries impose stringent travel restrictions over concerns about a new strain of the coronavirus that authorities say may spread more easily. A growing number of countries are halting air travel from the U.K., including Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Italy, and others are considering restrictions, like Sweden, South Africa and Hong Kong. Meanwhile France has banned trucks from the country for a period of 48 hours while the new variant is assessed. British Health Secretary Matt Hancock has said the strain is “out of control” around London and southeastern England — but experts have urged caution, saying it’s not clear if it’s more lethal. In an urgent message Saturday, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson closed all non-essential shops, hairdressers, gyms, and pools, and told his country they would have to rethink their holiday plans. He said the new strain appears to be 70% more transmissible than existing strains, and British experts believe this strain is causing the explosive surge in cases in the UK. However, he added "there's no evidence to suggest it is more lethal or causes more severe illness," or that vaccines will be less effective.The World Health Organization and health experts from around the world are researching the new strain, and working to identify what makes it different. LOS ANGELES (AP) — In a tense political climate, California is taking an unusual step and warning local election officials to prepare for disruption at polling places and potential cases of voters being intimidated or blocked from casting ballots. In a memo this week, the Secretary of State's office reminded county election officials it is a felony for any person to possess a firearm at a voting location or in the immediate vicinity, unless authorized. It's also illegal to threaten anyone in an attempt to discourage them from voting. Secretary of State Alex Padilla says he expects a safe election, but local officials should be ready for any attempts to disrupt or interfere with voting. 702
