The Centers for Disease Control has issued new guidance for employers, giving them various situations they may come across and how they should decide to test their employees for COVID-19."There's a lot of different questions coming out from employers about the whole process of testing, doing temperature taking of employees who are returning back to work again," says Amber Clayton, the knowledge center director at the Society for Human Resources Management.Clayton says employers are grappling with increased uncertainty surrounding how and when to implement coronavirus testing at their offices."Employers can have a policy in place. Per the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission they can test during this pandemic so they could require COVID testing. Now, antibody testing can’t be mandated but COVID testing can," says Clayton.The CDC recommends, in most cases, to only test employees who are showing symptoms.But what if a person knows they've been exposed to the virus but isn't showing symptoms, is a test appropriate?"I think it may be on a case by case basis. So, if it is positive, I think it's probably helpful. It tells you the person did in fact become infected," says Dr. Beth Thielen, an infectious disease doctor with the University of Minnesota.Dr. Thielen says employers should be careful, though, as employees who aren't showing symptoms could have a false negative if they test too early, before the virus spreads in the person's system."The CDC guidance still indicates if someone tests positive for COVID before they return back to work, they should be quarantined and out of work for at least 10 days, that they don't have a fever or they've they have gone without a fever for 24 hours or without fever reducing medications," says Clayton.Employers can ask employees who have gotten a positive COVID-19 test to take a second test, showing they're negative before returning to work, but the CDC doesn't recommend it and says in their guidelines, "Employees with COVID-19 who have stayed home can stop home isolation and return to work when they have met one of the sets of criteria.”Some of that criteria includes 10 days passing since the employee last experienced any COVID-19 symptoms.Dr. Thielen says, this recommendation makes sense."We haven’t detected people who have had culturable virus out as far as 14 days after," says Dr. Thielen. She adds, so far, studies have found that most people who still test positive weeks alter won't transmit the virus to others. She believes employers should continue to look to the CDC for guidance."I think these are some of our leading public health thinkers and they’re making decisions based on a long history of experience based on dealing with other respiratory infections but also newly emerging data," says Dr. Thielen.As for Clayton, she says employers will want to ensure the confidentiality of employees who do test positive while at the same time notifying others who may have been exposed. And also, do some research or consult legal counsel before implementing any testing at the office."Or if you have situations where employees refuse to be tested maybe for medical reasons, those things tend to fall under the Americans with Disabilities Act sometimes, so make sure you’re doing your homework before you implement any type of testing program," says Clayton. 3350

The first day of October might seem like an odd time to talk about summer camp, but one business has found a way to keep its operation running overtime during the COVID-19 pandemic.Camp Sea Gull is located on a remote part of the North Carolina shore. Typically, it accommodates thousands of campers a year. But once COVID-19 hit, that changed and put the camp in a precarious position along with so many other businesses.“It was really difficult,” said camp director Allison Simmons.Simmons said the camp was able to open this summer but only with a fraction of its normal participants. So, to try to attract more people, she had the idea of opening the bunks to families who wanted a change of scenery as they work or learn from home.“To me, this is giving a lot of our parents and students some hope in breaking up the monotony of whenever their school started,” said Simmons.The reservations allow families to stay at Camp Sea Gull for up to seven days, and Simmons, along with other administrators, came up with five different activity programs for families.The camp installed high-speed WiFi throughout its buildings so parents and their kids could access it during working hours, while it worked to offer activities afterward.A normal day might include opportunities to fish, sail, canoe, and play games from 3 p.m. to sundown.“[Before coming to camp] my kids were all sitting in their rooms by themselves for 6 or 8 hours a day in front of a screen, and that’s just not normal for kids,” said Stan Coerr.Coerr says he has been coming to Camp Sea Gull for 40 years--first as a camper, then as a counselor, and now as a dad who wants to plan a getaway with his three sons ages 20, 16, and 14.“I told my boys [the pandemic] won’t be the worst thing you go through but it will probably be the weirdest,” said Coerr. “And as much as I can get them out and doing things as a family, which is kind of rare these days, I will definitely take that opportunity.”Coerr says the four of them stay in the same bunk and have each claimed a portion of it for their work. Since being at camp for a few days now he says he has noticed his sons are more attentive to their schoolwork and bicker less.It has also allowed Simmons’ business to flourish. The Department of Justice on Monday filed complaints against 11 individuals believed to be members of the?Central American migrant caravan, accusing them of illegally entering the United States.After a month-long journey by bus, train and on foot, about 100 migrants arrived at the San Ysidro port of entry on the US-Mexico border on Sunday evening, preparing to claim asylum. About 20 to 30 migrants spent the night inside an immigration processing center in Tijuana, Mexico.An organizer of the caravan vowed they would remain at the immigration processing center until "every last one" is admitted into the United States.Two Salvadorans, six Hondurans, and three Guatemalans face charges, a federal law enforcement official told CNN.Ten of them face a misdemeanor charge for allegedly entering the US illegally. The COVID-19 death of the speaker of the New Hampshire House of Representatives has raised fears that other members of one of the world's largest legislatures might have been exposed at their swearing-in ceremony last week. A medical examiner announced the cause of death Thursday of 71-year-old Dick Hinch. Hinch was found dead in his home.He was photographed at the outdoor swearing-in wearing a mask improperly, without it covering both his nose and mouth. Dozens reportedly attended without wearing masks at all. Several Republican lawmakers have tested positive after attending an indoor meeting in late November where many attendees didn't wear masks. One Republican representative says Hinch's death may be a result of “peer pressure exerted by those in the Republican Party who refuse to take reasonable precautions."At a news conference Thursday, New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, a fellow Republican, called Hinch a "tireless leader" and close friend. He then said Hinch's death was a "cautionary tale" about not wearing a mask properly.“For those who are just out there doing the opposite just to make some ridiculous political point, it is horribly wrong,” Sununu said. “Please use your heads.
