A man charged with murder in the Gary, Indiana area remains at large after he escaped from a prisoner transport vehicle on Monday.According to the Chicago Tribune, Leon Taylor, 22, escaped from a vehicle driven by a private contractor when the driver stopped at a McDonald's drive-thru near Gary.Video released by the Lake County (Indiana) Sheriff's Office shows Taylor open the door of the vehicle while it was stopped in the drive-thru. Taylor ran across a busy street as the driver of the vehicle chased him.Taylor was being extradited from Texas to the Lake County Jail in Crown Point, Indiana, by REDI Transport. Initially, the REDI Transport driver told the Lake County Sheriff's Office that Taylor had escaped from the video."After watching this video, I am highly disturbed and disappointed by the procedures the private transportation driver used during the transfer of this suspect to our jail," Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. said in a news release. "I find it appalling that REDI Transports failed to use appropriate caution and may have put the public at risk."Police initially said that Taylor had been wearing a belly chain, handcuffs and a leg brace at the time of his escape. However, according to WLS-TV in Chicago the sheriff's office says the video now shows that Taylor likely was not handcuffed and that security footage shows him struggling with the leg braces throughout the trip."We believe shackles could have prevented the suspect from getting away," Martinez said.REDI Transport, which is based in Green Bay, Wisconsin, says it has opened an investigation into the incident."REDI Transports continues to cooperate fully with those investigating the prisoner escape that occurred yesterday afternoon in Gary, Indiana," the company said in a statement on Tuesday. "We are also conducting our own internal investigation into what happened and are determining what procedural or process changes may be needed to ensure this does not happen again."Taylor is wanted on murder charges in connection with an East Chicago, Indiana homicide. A maker of the Carolina reaper hot pepper is defending distributing the pepper after a man became hospitalized from eating the pepper, the UK's Sky News reported. The Carolina reaper was named the world's hottest pepper last year by the Guinness Book of World Records. The pepper is rated at 2.2 million Scoville heat units. By comparison, a jalapeno is rated up to 8,000 Scoville heat units. A habanero is rated up to 300,000 Scoville heat units. An article in last week's British Medical Journal claimed that a 34-year-old man was hospitalized for eating the pepper during a hot pepper eating contest. The man experienced "thunderclap" headaches, The report also claimed the man's arteries had constricted after consuming the pepper. But Salvatore Genovese, a grower and distributor of the Carolina reaper, said the pepper should be eaten "correctly," according to the Sky News.  "It's not really designed to... just plonk it in your mouth and eat it," Genovese said. "I would never do that and I wouldn't recommend it."Just cook with it, make a curry, infuse it slowly take it out if you want to afterwards, and get the rich flavors from that super-hot chili."Genovese told Sky News he sold nearly 500,000 over the last few years without hearing any complaints. The unidentified 34-year-old man showed normal health five weeks after eating the pepper.  1458

A federal prosecutor who was helping lead the investigation into the origins of the Trump-Russia probe has resigned from the Justice Department. Nora Dannehy was a top prosecutor on a team led by U.S. Attorney John Durham of Connecticut, who was appointed last year to lead an investigation into how the FBI and other federal agencies set out to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and whether the Trump campaign had coordinated with the Kremlin. A federal appeals court handed the Trump administration a partial victory Monday, granting its emergency request to allow parts of its latest travel ban to go into effect while the appeal is pending.A three-judge panel -- all appointed by former President Bill Clinton -- on the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals decided Monday to keep the lower court's order in place, freezing the ban, for foreign nationals who have a "close familial relationship" with a person in the United States, but granted the Trump administration's request to allow it to go into effect for everyone else.The 9th Circuit panel is set to hear oral arguments on the case on December 6.President Donald Trump signed an executive order in January banning foreign nationals from specific Muslim-majority countries from traveling to the United States, but the restrictions have been tied up in the legal system and have since been revised multiple times.In October, a federal judge in Hawaii blocked the third iteration of the travel ban one day before it was scheduled to take effect.At the time, Judge Derrick Watson said it "plainly discriminates based on nationality."The ban targeted foreign nationals from eight countries -- Chad, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Syria, Venezuela, Somalia and Yemen -- with varying levels of restrictions.The second version of the travel ban, issued in March, had barred residents of six Muslim-majority countries -- Iran, Syria, Libya, Sudan, Somalia and Yemen. 1487

A man shot by a Cuyahoga County, Ohio Sheriff's deputy near Cleveland on I-90 on Thursday has died.The medical examiner identified the man as Brett Luengo, 33, of Westlake, Ohio. He was transported to MetroHealth Medical Center where he was treated, expired and pronounced dead last night. Luengo was a prominent businessman who was the CEO and Vice President of ConstructAbility Inc., a construction services firm in Westlake.The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce awarded ConstructAbility with an award in 2017.The shooting took place along Interstate 90 near West Boulevard Thursday evening.The scene led to a major police presence and traffic back-up in the eastbound lanes between West 44th Street and West Boulevard.The deputy involved was not injured.Witnesses say the incident started after a single-vehicle crash. The driver then got out of the SUV and was acting both erratically and violently to those trying to help him. Authorities say he was involved in an altercation when the deputy exited his own vehicle. When the deputy approached, the sheriff said Luengo "charged (the deputy) in an aggressive manner.""He kept screaming to shoot him. The cop kept asking him to roll over, put your hands behind your back. The man was not cooperating. He kept trying to get up and attack the police officer, he kept lunging at him," witness Jason Geiger said. "I think what happened at that point he ran out of taser cartridges because at that point he shot the guy."Authorities say the deputy fired one shot.
