SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Portland nonprofit is spreading hope and strength where it's needed most, to children and teens battling cancer, living with special needs, or coping after trauma.The Capes and Crowns Foundation gives these warriors a chance to live out their superhero fantasy for a day, dressing them up in the hero, princess or athlete of their choice.With the help of imagination and Photoshop, the result is a captivating photo the family can cherish forever. “It reminds these kids they are the real superheroes," said Kylie Cole, Founder and President of the foundation.Because many of the children have a terminal illness, Cole says every photo shoot must be perfect.Her team goes the extra mile, not only with staged photo shoots but also photographing hospice sessions and memorial services.“It's very obvious, this is what my entire life was meant for," said Cole.Capes and Crowns is touring the country to reach as many kids as possible.For the Los Angeles/San Diego trip, costumes alone cost ,000.The team hopes people watching will be inspired by their mission and donate to help more kids live out their wildest imaginations.  1165

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man united families across the United States after digging into a military training crash that happened 50 years ago at MCAS El Toro.Johnathan Keene often visited his cousin's grave at Arlington National Cemetery, "I go up to visit him twice a year, typically Memorial Day and Veteran's Day." On January 15, 2019, he was in the neighborhood, stopped by and it was that day that he noticed Maj. Walter Zytkewicz grave next to his cousin's grave.Maj. Zytkewicz was in the Marines, like his cousin, and died the day before his cousin. He said that 'grabbed' him.Up until that day he knew his cousin, Capt. Robert Walls, died in a military crash, but it wasn't spoken of at the dinner table.He knew there must be a connection to the two men, so he started digging. He found four other Marines were on the same training flight July 30th, 1970. "Major Zytkewicz was 2 months away from retiring," Keene said he was studying to become a realtor.Staff Sergeant Kenneth Davis, 1st Lieutenant Mullins and Corporal Kenneth Metzdorf. Keene said Metzdorf wasn't supporsed to be on the flight, "called his best friend and said hey could you go on this flight for me today? So they switched and that cost him [his life]."Keene tracked down the redacted incident report and filled in the gaps with interviews from witnesses and Marines who knew the men on board."Witnesses say they waited too late to pull the plane out of the angle of attack and the plane hit, bounced, flipped upside down, hit again, bounced in the air, the left wing fell off, all four props fell off. The plane landed right in the middle of the air field. Flames and fuel streamed down the runway, they said it was basically a long stream of fuel and fire," he said.Flames Keene was amazed to learn his cousin and Metzdorf walked through, "the report listed 80%-90% coverage of third degree burns. I can't even imagine how he walked out," he said shocked.Mullins was killed on impact, found 50 yards from the plane with a broken leg. Walls, Zytkewicz and Metzdorf died days later from their injuries.Keene said Walls died from burns in his lungs.SSgt. Davis passed in 2013.The exact cause was redacted in the report. Keene believes the Marine Corps wants to preserve the honor of the pilot and protect his family."After the crash, the material that made up Marine Corps and Navy flight suits was changed. They thought it was a flame retardant material, unfortunately it burned and melted to their skin," he said.Keene hopes these difficult discoveries will fuel Marines' admiration. To keep their memories alive, Keene created a plaque with the team's names that will be presented at MCAS Miramar, where the squadron now resides."Every other Marine that goes through that squadron will see that plaque and realize there's five men that in some way or another touched their lives from either a safety stand-point or history and lineology of VMGR-352," Keene said. 2946

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man was killed after crashing into a parked truck on Interstate 5 in East Village near Petco Park Monday afternoon. The crash happened shortly after 1 p.m. on southbound Interstate 5 at Imperial Avenue, according to California Highway Patrol. CHP says the 21-year-old victim from Calexico was reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed when he crashed his 2015 Nissan sedan into a parked cargo truck. CHP says the victim, who hasn't yet been identified, died at the scene. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Carlos woman says a buzzing sound caught her off guard at home. When she looked around, she spotted a drone hovering near her bedroom window, peering in.  Yvette Skalka was hanging her laundry in the backyard on September 6 when she heard the noise. She says she looked up and a small, white drone. “It hovered for a good 3 to 5 minutes.  It gave me an uneasy feeling. It didn’t feel right,” said Skalka.The drone flew up to the top of a palm on the property for a few minutes, before flying back down.“It was near three dogs and driving them crazy, like it was tormenting them,” said Skalka.Eventually, the drone flew off.  Skalka filed a police report and posted details on the Nextdoor app.  Another neighbor responded that she believed the same drone has recently hovered near her ground-floor bedroom, watching her college-age daughter.  That family also filed a police report. 956

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man was hospitalized Saturday night after being stabbed several times during a confrontation in Mission Beach, police said.The incident happened around 8 p.m. in the 900 block of West Mission Bay, said Ofc. Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.Heims said a 26-year-old man approached and exchanged words with a 50-year-old man. The younger man then pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim multiple times."The victim fell to the ground and the suspect fled the scene," Heims said. "The victim was transported to the hospital where his injuries were determined (to be) non-life threatening."The suspect was caught a short time later and arrested.
