SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new SANDAG report found that when it compared to the region's Caucasian population, Black and Hispanic communities are more than four times as likely to live in an area impacted by COVID-19 and unemployment. The report says more than two-thirds of the county's Black (67%) and Hispanic (70%) populations live in zip codes with higher than average unemployment rates. About half of Black (52%) and Hispanic (49%) San Diegans live in zip codes with higher than average COVID-19 cases as well.In comparison, the study says Caucasian (14%) and Asian (24%) populations are less impacted in both cases."As regional elected officials and leaders, it is important for us to think strategically about how to coordinate with the Black and Hispanic communities – and all communities in need – to determine which programs and policies can put in place to guide an equitable recovery as businesses begin to reopen and as people return to work or look for new jobs," said SANDAG Chair and Poway Mayor Steve Vaus.SANDAG says the most affected areas reside in the southern part of the county. The following zip codes have been most affected by COVID-19:91910 (Chula Vista N)91911 (Chula Vista S)91917 (Dulzura)91932 (Imperial Beach)91950 (National City)91977 (Spring Valley)91978 (Rancho San Diego)92020 (El Cajon)92021 (El Cajon)92102 (Golden Hill)92105 (City Heights)92113 (Logan Heights)92114 (Encanto)92115 (College)92139 (Paradise Hills)92154 (Nestor)92173 (San Ysidro)As of June 7, SANDAG reported the region's unemployment rate at 28.5%, or about 480,000 residents.SANDAG found that unemployment and the effect on industries have hit populations differently:Hispanic employees make up the largest percentage of the essential workforce in building cleaning services (65%), grocery and drug stores (44%), and childcare and social services (39%).Black employees account for more than 7% of the childcare and social services; 9% in trucking, warehouse, and postal service; and nearly 20% of public transit workers.Asian employees represent 22% of those working in the health care sector.White employees account for only 40% of the pool of workers in high-contact and essential occupations. To read SANDAG's full report, click here. 2245

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego man has made it his mission to lift up young people through sports. Gordon Brown is our LEAD San Diego Leadership Award winner for December. He’s a mentor for inner-city golfers, a sport often seen as a past-time for the 1 percent. “I played golf across the street from my house from where we lived, on the school ground. It was five of, three of us, that used one golf club,” said Brown. From those humble beginnings in South Carolina, Brown forged a career in professional golf that eventually led him to San Diego. In 1973, he started helping disadvantaged kids learn the game. "What golf teaches to the kids that we've raised through the San Diego inner City Junior Golf Foundation is honor, dignity respect, etiquette, and truly wanting to do something better with their lives.” Brown estimates he has worked with thousands of kids over the years. He may not remember them all, but they remember his patience, skill, and generosity through the San Diego Inner-City Junior Golf Foundation. 1032

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A pursuit sparked an officer-involved shooting in Imperial Beach late Saturday night. According to police, officers tried to pull over a Ford F-150 that was reported stolen around 10:30 p.m. Saturday on the 1900 block of Dairy Mart Road. Police say the driver didn’t stop, instead driving into a cul-de-sac, making a u-turn and driving toward officers. “Believing his partner was going to be run over, one officer fired his service weapon to defend the other officer,” police said in a news release. At some point during the pursuit, the suspect threw a handgun out of the truck. RELATED: One shot, killed at Linda Vista recreation centerThe suspect eventually stopped on the 1200 block of Holly Avenue in Imperial Beach and ran away from the scene with a female passenger. The woman has since been located while police continue to search for the suspect. Homicide detectives have been called to investigate due to an officer firing his weapon, police say. It’s unclear whether or not the suspect was hit. Police say the officer who fired at the suspect is a three-year veteran of the department. No officers were injured. Anyone with information is asked to call San Diego Police at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 1259

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A North Park house, empty for years, has nearby neighbors frustrated about the lack of action taken to clean up the property they say has become a magnet for crime. "We have people that are squatting here, we've had illicit drug use, we've had prostitutes, we've had an increase in break ins in the area, " said Alan Nelson, who lives across the street. Nelson says even though he and others call the police, unless it's an emergency they can't always come out. He has called and emailed Councilman Chis Ward's office repeatedly about the matter but isn't happy with the response he's received. Ward's office says the property is in foreclosure and the case is being handled by the city attorney's office. They issued the following statement to 10News:"My office has been working with the San Diego police department and city code enforcement to address the illegal activity occurring at this property. Public safety is and will always remain my most pressing priority." A code compliance hearing for the property is scheduled for late April.  1106
