They have been in business since 1818, so you would think they would have weather prognostication down to a science. The folks at the Farmers' Almanac have issued their forecast for the upcoming winter, and for many, purchasing a snowblower might not be a bad investment. The Farmers Almanac predicts that the Central US, Midwest and Northeast will see a cold, brutal winter. For those who live in Montana, Wyoming and Colorado and to the east, the almanac calls for "teeth-chattering cold" and "plentiful snow." For those in the Midwest, expect "biting cold" and snow this winter. And those in the Northeast should expect a "cold and white" winter. The West Coast should see a more average winter, with greater than average rain in the Pacific Northwest. While it will remain cold in Texas, the Southeast should be closer to average, with above-average rainfall. If you are hoping for a more modest winter, you will like the forecast from the Old Farmers' Almanac. Old Farmers' Almanac is suggesting a mild winter for most of the United States, with the exception being in the Southwest. The Rockies, while still mild, should expect a snowy winter. How these publications come up with said forecasts are a bit of a mystery, much like KFC's secret recipe. "we derive our weather forecasts from a secret formula that was devised by the founder of this Almanac, Robert B. Thomas, in 1792. Thomas believed that weather on Earth was influenced by sunspots, which are magnetic storms on the surface of the Sun," the Old Farmers' Almanac says on its website.  1616

Thursday marks exactly six months since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global health crisis connected with the disease that was then simply known as the novel coronavirus.Half a year later, the virus has infected 17 million people on every continent and killed more than 600,000 worldwide. On Jan. 31, WHO issued a statement saying that Dr. Tedros Adhanom, the director-general of the organization, had accepted a committee's recommendation to declare the outbreak of the virus in China a "public health emergency of international concern."At the time, the outbreak was mainly concentrated in China, as the country had confirmed 7,711 cases of the virus and 170 deaths linked to the disease. While the virus had been recorded in five other countries — including five cases in the U.S. — there had been no deaths recorded outside of China. In its Jan. 31 declarations, the WHO did not recommend any travel or trade restrictions, but urged countries to prepare for containment and "place emphasis on reducing human infection, prevention of secondary transmission and international spread."The organization issued its recommendation 10 days after China reported that the virus appeared to be spreading from person-to-person, a finding that indicated the disease could have far-reaching implications. The New York Times reports that by that time, thousands had traveled out of Wuhan, the virus' place of origin, possibly spreading it around the world. China has since faced criticism for not reporting its findings sooner. That same day, President Donald Trump took action to block entry into the U.S. of any person that had been in China for the last 14 days. The order did not apply to U.S. citizens. While the move may have temporarily delayed the virus' widespread arrival, his administration's inaction for the next month would prove costly.During the next month, the CDC would face significant delays in developing a test for COVID-19, which would cause a testing backup in the months to come. The president also repeatedly downplayed the severity of the situation, declaring on Feb. 26 that the number of cases in the U.S. would go down to zero in the coming days.In the months since the WHO's declaration, 150,000 Americans have died of COVID-19, and more than 4 million have been infected. Both figures are by far the most of any other country. 2370

This week marks Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 3.6 million Americans face a risk of lead poisoning from lead-based house paint. The CDC says that even low levels of lead in the bloodstream can cause cognitive impairment in children that is irreversible.“As we observe National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, we urge people to take action,” said Patrick Breysse, PhD, CIH, Director of CDC’s National Center for Environmental Health. “Together, we can eliminate childhood lead poisoning as a public health problem by strengthening blood lead testing, reporting, and surveillance, while linking exposed children to recommended services. CDC is committed to help address this threat and improve health outcomes for our nation’s most vulnerable citizens – our children.”The CDC is encouraging parents to get their children’s lead levels checked by a doctor. The CDC says that the screening is covered for those on Medicaid. While homes older than 42 years old may contain leaded paint, other risks could come from the environment, and exposure to lead-containing products such as antique cookware and leaded crystal glassware. For more information on lead poisoning, click here. 1245
