"I thought he was crazy," said Dave Egeler about what his identical twin told him he was going to do to raise ,000 to help two charities dedicated to helping dogs rescued from neglect, dogfighting and other forms of cruelty. This Saturday, Dan Egeler, a retired lawyer and cancer survivor, is planning to run four full marathons in 24 hours. Egeler's goal is to get a lot of people to donate a little bit or a lot to help him get to his goal of ,000. The money will be shared between Waggin' Tails Dog Rescue and Bark Nation which helps dogs recover from the abuse they've been subjected to in dogfighting. Both charities are nonprofit organizations that are driven by volunteers who are dedicated to helping the dogs recover from any physical and mental injuries they've suffered. "Anyone who owns a dog knows they are unconditional in their love," Egeler said. "They provide a lot of joy and excitement in the family and they're just so great to have around so we love dogs."And everyone will be able to keep up with Egeler's progress that will begin Saturday at 1 o'clock in the afternoon because he'll be wearing a tracker.Egeler will start in Dexter and run through parts of western Washtenaw county and on a track at night. He'll end his marathons Sunday at 1 o'clock in the afternoon in Dexter.Click here to find out more about the race, the charities, and where to make a donation. "Obviously it's a strong stress on the body and I plan for that, but I gotta do this and I've got to complete four marathons in 24 hours," Egeler said. "And that's gonna be more of a mental challenge than a physical challenge." This story originally reported by Kimberly Craig on wxyz.com. 1709

Hair stylist Joy Munlin has become a professional at straightening natural hair, because she says so many of her working clients request it. “Some of them have been called in the office by their superiors just to say it's too ethnic and it's distracting and can you do something about it,” Munlin says. Natural hair texture ranges from wavy, to curly to coily and has not been altered with chemical straighteners. Historically it has been seen as less attractive and unprofessional. Now, for the first time, new guidelines in New York City are aiming to protect New Yorkers from being harassed, threatened, punished, demoted or fired because of their natural hair. In a viral video, Antionette Jones Gaston shared how her job asked her to straighten her hair. “I felt so ugly that day over something as simple as my hair,” she says in the video. Gaston is no longer with the company, but she hopes the new rules will make people and organizations more aware.“Caucasians have their hair in different colors and different types of style, and they're just looked at as being different,” Gaston says. “But I’m looked at unpresentable, because of my race and the kinkiness of my hair.” TV journalist Brittany Noble Jones made headlines after being fired just a month after asking her boss if she could wear her natural hair on-air.“He was like, ‘Yeah, that's fine’ and then about a month later, he was like your natural hair is unprofessional,” Jones recalls. New Yorkers facing hair discrimination will be able to take legal action up to 0,000. But Jones says the potential impact can be far more than financial. “Now that there's really rules in place, I think more people are going to be more free to express themselves and wear their hair the way that God intended,” Jones says. 1796

New research shows suicide rates among teens are going up and are now at their highest levels since 2000. Now, pop star Lady Gaga is now taking steps to try and save lives in schools across the country. At Freedom High School in northern Virginia, students Katie Ramboyong and Jake Beyer spent part of their school year keeping an eye on other students, looking for any signs one of their classmates might be in trouble. “You never know when there's another kid struggling that we could help out,” says Beyer. About 550 10th-grade students at the high school spent a week in training to learn how to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health issues among their classmates. “Withdrawing from school, not talking to friends, just not being yourself as much,” Ramboyong says of the signs. Students then alert teachers or staff about any red flags. Ramboyong ended up using her training to help a student who told her on social media that he wanted to kill himself. “I found out that he had tried to kill himself already and he was not in a good place,” she recalls. “The next day, I went in and I talked to both of our teachers that we had, and I told her that he was not okay and that it was serious and he needed help right away.” At Freedom High School, the training helped identify nine students who ended up going through suicide screenings because of behavior concerns. Kenneth Christopher, the school’s director of school counseling, says they received the names of the students because of the program.“One hundred percent it's working, and it is helping and our students are making a difference because they're speaking up, they're telling a trusted adult, they're linking up the student with someone here at the school that could possibly give them outside resources to help them and possibly save some lives,” Christopher says. The program is part of an initiative with Lady Gaga's Born This Way Foundation. “My dream is that this happens in every school,” the singer says of the initiative. Eight schools took part of the pilot program, which will expand to 20 more schools this fall. 2113

My dad has only ever liked one video game - Galaga. He and my mom used to go play it on date nights when they were newly-weds and broke. This year, me and my siblings all pitched in to get him a Galaga arcade machine for Christmas. I don't think I've ever seen him more excited to get a present! 311
