SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — La Mesa-Spring Valley School District officials have postponed the district's planned reopening date, citing concerns that San Diego County will soon be placed in the state's most restrictive reopening tier. The district's reopening has been moved from Oct. 12 for hybrid learning to the week of Nov. 30, according to the district. The hybrid learning plan will bring small groups of students to in-person classes two days a week.LMSV said the decision was based on the county's potential rollback into California's purple reopening tier and the district's proximity to the College Area, where cases linked to San Diego State have steadily increased since school resumed on Aug. 24.RELATED: Supervisors to discuss reopening options if San Diego moves into more restrictive tierThe district called SDSU's case increase "particularly concerning.""We decided to postpone our reopening date after learning the county would likely be downgraded to tier 1 on the state COVID-19 tier system. We felt it was best to err on the side of caution and postpone our reopening date in the hopes that the outbreaks subside," the district said in a statement to ABC 10News."We want nothing more than to welcome students back on campus, but we must ensure that it is safe to do so. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Marty Coyne snags the same prime spot at Campland on the Bay every Fourth of July weekend.He parks his massive RV right across from the water."Wouldn't trade it in for any other place to stay in the summer," he said Friday. "It's beautiful here, safe here, the grandkids can run free and have a great time."This year - however - the celebration is quite a bit different - due the outbreak of Covid 19.Campland on the Bay, on Mission Bay's north end, is like many hotels along San Diego's coastline. It's not totally booked.Elvin Lai, who owns the Ocean Park Inn in Pacific Beach, said he was booked in the high 60 percents at a time when the hotel is usually full. "It doesn't mean that I won't get last minute bookings but we're used to being sold out for the month of July months in advance, so it's different."On Friday at the campland, the mood was festive, but the activities were limited - the skate park and basketball courts were taped off. There won't be any bands for outdoor entertainment, and indoor dining is disallowed.Campland on the Bay also placed yellow cones on the beach to give people a clear path to the water. It's also requiring all tents to be spaced out by eight feet. Masks are required in public areas, and rangers are carrying around extra.Still, not every visitor was wearing a mask."Everybody doesn't follow it," said Barry Homer, who is staying on the grounds with his wife Cindy. "It'a always a problem everywhere in the world, for lots of reasons."Hotels and Campland are still open to last minute reservations."We anticipate it's going to be be like this no more than today and tomorrow, and then it'll go down to quiet as people go back to their normal lives," said Ahmed Aitlahcen, the campland's general manafger.The Auto Club predicts 107 million residents of the Pacific Coastal states will take trips this summer. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Marine biologists and other experts are at Fiesta Island Tuesday morning to try to determine what caused the death of a large whale.The gray whale was discovered by lifeguards on the shore of Blacks Beach Monday at about 11 a.m.The dead whale was eventually towed from the Torrey Pines area to Fiesta Island, arriving at 3:30 p.m.Officials with the National Marine Fisheries were called to Fiesta Island to perform a necropsy.After Tuesday's examination, the whale is expected to be transported to the Miramar Landfill.  552

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It’s the largest loss of life in United States Navy history and you can read an award-winning account of it by two San Diego authors. ‘Indianapolis: The True Story of the Worst Sea Disaster in U.S. Naval History and the Fifty-Year Fight to Exonerate an Innocent Man’ is being released as a paperback after the hardcover became a New York Times bestseller. Sara Vladic and Lynn Vincent wrote the book together after researching it for more than 17 years. “It’s so much more than a sinking story and a shark story,” said author Lynn Vincent. Vladic spent nearly two decades interviewing survivors from the sinking USS Indianapolis. “Getting to know these men and their story and heroism and what it took to survive those days is incredible,” added Vladic, “it still teaches us lessons today of what the cost of freedom really is and what we should be remembering.” The book is cinematically written and presents multiple accounts from the men that had to fend off sharks and each other for several days at sea after the heavy cruiser was sank by the Japanese during WWII. The authors say they are in talks with several streaming services to make a miniseries based on the book. 1202
