The year 2020 has proven it knows how to challenge people who live in places like the Gulf Coast.Multiple storms slammed the state of Louisiana and the city of Lake Charles.Dr. Tyson Green lost his home in Hurricane Laura in August. His family evacuated before the storm as he rode it out in a Lake Charles hospital so he could be close to his patients.His community now faces a recovery that is expected to take years.“I don't know how you begin to put it into words, to be honest with you. We’ve had a tough year, to say the least," Green said. "I think with the combination of the pandemic, the hurricanes, the resurgence of the pandemic that beat us while we were down, it’s been rough, but we are getting better we are coming together as a community."Since the storm, he's raised money for nurses and healthcare workers who were impacted by Mother Nature this year. His GoFundMe has raised more than ,000 dollars. The money raised is key, especially during the holiday season."It was such a blessing to be able to give them something through the GoFundMe efforts that we did. The ability to give them a better Christmas, people that lost everything, even the people who lost what they had and were reimbursed by whatever means insurance or FEMA, they still didn't have the means. There are 725 days until the 2020 presidential election.  “I know people think it's a long way out, but the reality is the Iowa caucuses are likely to be 15 months from now, if not sooner,” says Dr. Lara Brown, the director of the Graduate School of Political Management at George Washington University.Iowa is key. Several high-profile Democrats have already visited the state recently, and experts say it won't be long until some of them officially throw their hat in the ring.“I would imagine we're going to have some candidates announcing their runs either at the end of this year, so the end of December, or in the first two months of 2019,” says Brown.Brown published a book on presidential nominations and elections called “Jockeying for the American Presidency: The Political Opportunism of Aspirants.”Brown says Democrats can expect a crowded field, just like the Republicans had in 2016.While no one has officially announced a party candidate, a list of potential candidates has been building for months.“We're going to have a lot of different Democrats from a lot of different regions, trying to make the argument they're really the one to lead the party and bring the White House back to the Democrats.”While it's rare that an incumbent president loses a re-election campaign, Brown says President Trump is vulnerable.“It’s evident after the 2018 elections that the Republican party's base is shrinking,” she says. “They are not appealing to as many people as they used to. Toys "R" Us is on its way out, but KB Toys is set to pop back up.Strategic Marks, a company that buys and revitalizes defunct brands, owns the KB name and plans to open 1,000 pop-up KB Toys stores for Black Friday and the holiday shopping season."My assumption is that there's about half a billion dollars worth of toys that have been produced for Toys "R" Us with no place to go," said Strategic Marks president Ellia Kassoff, in a phone interview with CNNMoney. "That's a big, big void that we're hoping to fill up."Toys "R" Us, which filed for bankruptcy last year, announced last week that it expects to close all of its 735 stores in the US. Those closures will put 31,000 people out of work and hurt toy manufacturers that depended on the national retailer for distribution.Kassoff said he's been in contact with Hasbro Inc. and Mattel, Inc. and up to 200 smaller toy suppliers who are looking for new brick and mortar retailers. He said he plans to take advantage of a glut of toy manufacturers that have inventory but no place to sell it.To get a quick retail footprint, Kassoff said he's working with companies that specialize in holiday and pop-up retail, like Spencer Spirit Holdings Inc., Go! Retail Group, and Party City Holdco Inc."We're talking to companies that know how to do it, they have a methodology, they're used to rolling out stuff real quickly," he said.After the holiday shopping season ends, Kassoff will decide which of the pop-up stores will become permanent, based on their performance and whether he can negotiate a lease.Strategic Marks bought the KB Toys brand from Bain Capital in 2016.
