ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - An Escondido CrossFit class got quite a nasty surprise when they went outside for their workout, Wednesday. They found human feces.The owner of Boombox CrossFit North, Brittani Ramirez, said she was in shock when she heard over the phone, "I didn't believe her; I was like no, we get dogs back there all the time, like I'm sure it was just a stray dog."When she looked back at their security footage, it showed a man walking up to the back door, wiggling the handle, then walking to the corner of the lot, pulling down his pants and defecating.The footage showed it was 3:30 p.m., just an hour before class started."One of my amazing members Lacey stepped in, she gloved up, got some trash bags, she got some bleach, and Katie, one of my coaches, the two of them handled the business," Ramirez said.A health concern for everyone involved. Ramirez said this isn't her first unpleasant experience with homeless, she said they've been stopping in over the three years Boombox has been open."They walk in and they see it's obviously very different in here but still a lot of them are mentally ill or on drugs so they don't quite understand," Ramirez said before she bought the building, it was a redevelopment center for homeless and convicts. The former facility was there for more than 30 years.Ramirez hopes the city can do something to help them. At the gym, she's planning to lock the gate each day to make sure there is no more unwanted surprises.The Deputy City Manager, William Wolfe, said the city's reunited 50-60 homeless people with their families who are now caring for them. He said he is meeting with local business owners Thursday night to talk about forming a homeless task force. He said the city already has a Quality of Life Team, made up of local leaders to address these issues and seek out solutions. If a business owner has an issue with homeless, Wolfe said they should call him.Ramirez opened Boombox after rediscovering her love for fitness. She played basketball, volleyball and softball in her youth and after having children she wanted to rekindle that fire. Her gym is named after their empowering music that is often flowing through the open doors.Ramirez said the gym is a labor of love, adding members helped her paint the gym and build equipment. 2313

ENCINITAS (KGTV) -- The Encinitas Environmental Commission is considering a proposal to ban natural gas hookups in all new construction projects as a way to combat climate change.The plan, which will be heard by the commission again next month, was authored by environmental commissioner Jim Wang. Wang spearheaded the city’s bans on plastic bags and polystyrene containers, commonly known as styrofoam.“The problem is that methane is a much more potent global warming gas than CO2, it’s approximately 85 times as potent,” he said. “Even a small amount of natural gas causes a big problem with global warming.”RELATED: Encinitas proposes ban on gas-powered leaf blowersWang’s proposal would impact both residential and commercial construction, but would not affect existing buildings. In July, Berkley passed a ban on natural gas infrastructure in new construction that will take effect next year. Twenty other California cities are considering similar bans, Wang said.“I’ve never seen a restaurant run on electric stove-tops. It would be quite the challenge,” said Daniel England, the corporate chef behind Union Kitchen and Tap in Encinitas and other restaurants.England said he would not consider renting a building for a restaurant if it lacked natural gas.RELATED: Encinitas restaurant fined for allowing customers to dance“As a chef, it’s something we’ve been trained on from day one from culinary school. I couldn’t imagine cooking without natural gas. I’ve tried to cook on an electric stove at home and you don’t get the same consistency,” he said.Michael McSweeney of the Building Industry Association of San Diego County said the cost of electricity is typically about three times more than natural gas, so the cost of home ownership in Encinitas would rise.“It seems that they want to reduce their carbon footprint, which is great, but the biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions in Encinitas is automobile transportation,” he said. “Cutting down on car transportation, they’d get more bang for their buck.”Transportation accounts for 54 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions in Encinitas. Electricity accounts for 23 percent. Natural gas ranks third on the list, at 13 percent, according to the city’s 2018 Climate Action Plan.“Yes, it may be a little more expensive but it’s for the greater good,” Wang said.In addition to cutting greenhouse gas emissions, restrictions on natural gas could provide safety and health benefits, Wang argued, citing the 2010 San Bruno pipeline explosion that killed 8 people.Homes that cook with natural gas at least once per week have air quality that would be illegal outdoors, he said, with levels of nitrogen dioxide and formaldehyde that exceed outdoor federal air quality standards.The Environmental Commission will consider the proposal at its Dec. 12 meeting at 5:30 pm. (KGTV) -- Neighbors in an Escondido neighborhood are worried after they say dozens of tires were slashed overnight Saturday.The incidents reportedly happened on 4th Avenue and 2nd Avenue between Date and Elm Streets.Residents on 4th Avenue reported waking up Sunday morning to find that at least 11 vehicles had their tires slashed.Similarly, residents on 2nd avenue reported that nearly 30 vehicles had slashed tires.Police said they have been made aware of the incidents but it’s unclear if they have a suspect or will be investigating.Imagine waking up and finding your tires slashed, then finding out it happened to DOZENS more on your block. FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) -- A 55-year-old man died Monday afternoon following a crash in Fallbrook, according to California Highway Patrol.The agency said the crash happened on East Mission Road west of Red Mountain Dam Drive around 1:16 p.m.CHP said a 47-year-old woman driving a Mustang drifted to the left into oncoming traffic, striking a Toyota Tacoma driven by the 55-year-old man.The driver of the Tacoma was taken to the hospital where he later died. The driver of the Mustang was also taken to the hospital for major injuries, CHP said.Officers later determined that the driver of the Mustang was under the influence of a drug. She was arrested before being released into the care of Palomar Medical Center, CHP said.The crash is under investigation. 767
