This Thanksgiving is shaping up to be like no other. With the U.S. experiencing a spike in COVID-19 cases, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is advising Americans to celebrate turkey day with the people they live with, as opposed to traditional feasts with extended family and friends. With many people celebrating the holiday is small groups, it may be easier and more cost efficient to order takeout or ready-made meals this year. Not only could ordering in save you money and work, it may also serve as an opportunity to support the restaurant industry that has been hit so hard by the pandemic, especially small establishments. The business could help them make up for lost revenue. A survey released by National Restaurant Association in September found that 1 in 6 restaurants was closed either permanently or long-term, nearly 3 million workers were out of work, and the industry was on track to lose 0 billion in sales by the end of 2020.There are endless options for takeout for your Thanksgiving meal. You could celebrate with any cuisine, but if you want to stick to traditional foods, some national chains are offering turkey day dinners. Here are a few:Denny’s – The restaurant is offering a family-style “Turkey & Dressing Dinner Pack” that can be picked up until 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 25.Cracker Barrel – Like in years past, the chain is offering meals for gatherings of all sizes, including its “Thanksgiving Heat n’ Serve Family Dinner.”Boston Market – This chain may also be an option, as it serves up plated meals, family meals, whole pies and hot side dishes.Offers.com also compiled a list of more than 30 restaurant chains that are open on Thanksgiving.Regardless of where you order from, consider leaving a tip for the restaurant employees who are not only working on Thanksgiving, but also in the midst of a pandemic. 1876

This is supposed to be the first week of class for many Washington state schools. But exactly when students in some districts will go to class remains a mystery.Teacher strikes in two districts have already forced the cancellation of classes on their first day of school Tuesday.Evergreen Public Schools are closed because no deal has been reached between the school district and the Evergreen Education Association over salaries.Negotiations are ongoing, and the school district said it will give parents at least 24 hours' notice before classes will begin. The Washougal School District also missed its first day of school Tuesday due to a strike by the Washougal Association of Educators.School district representatives met with union members and mediators Monday to try to reach an agreement on teacher salary increases."The district and the association have worked hard to reach an understanding but, unfortunately, we were not able to come to an agreement," district Superintendent Mary Templeton said.Four other state school districts, which are scheduled to start classes Wednesday, could have those plans derailed by strikes over salaries and benefits.Vancouver Public Schools, Longview Public Schools, Battle Ground Public Schools and the Hockinson School District all announced that negotiations are continuing with teachers and mediators. The Hockinson School District said it's hoping to start classes on time but is asking parents to have backup plans for their children, just in case. 1515

Those who have recovered from the coronavirus have been asked to donate convalescent plasma to help patients fight the virus. The American Red Cross says it has seen demand for convalescent plasma double as cases rise across the US. The Red Cross says that donations of convalescent plasma are unable to keep up with demand. The plasma is used for its antibiodies, and while not considered a cure for the virus, it could help patients fight off the disease. Franklin Miles, a recovered COVID-19 patient, said he learned about the need for convalescent plasma while in the hospital. He said he didn’t know if he would survive.“It is rewarding to be one of the catalysts to have it, recover from it and can help whether it’s one or 50 people or 100 people,” Miles said.Miles said he had to wait 28 days to donate, and the process is similar to giving blood. He has donated every 28 days since recovering.Doctors are still researching the effectiveness of convalescent plasma, but so far, it appears the earlier COVID-19 patients can receive plasma, the better. 1064

There have been about 11 natural disaster in the U.S. this year, each costing more than billion. The Montoyas survived Houston’s Hurricane Harvey.  Nearly a year and a half later, they are living in just one bedroom of their house, because they can't afford the repairs to the rest of their home. "It became really overwhelming, so I sat, and I just prayed, and I just said, ‘I'm going to leave it at your feet,’” says Monica Montoya. The Montoyas could be any of us. The locations in the path of natural disasters are changing, whether it's floods, freezing or flames."We're starting to see fires where we haven't seen fires before,” says Professor Jennifer Balch, an earth lab director at the University of Colorado. The client expert says forests are drying out, because global temperatures have warmed 1.8 degrees. Fires that we used to see primarily in the west are starting farther east. "So, the Gatlinburg fires in Tennessee, which killed several people," says Balch as an example.Fourteen people were killed and 2,400 buildings were damaged.Balch says she’s worried for the future."We've also seen fires in the tundra ecosystem in the arctic, which we haven't seen fires in the ecosystem seen 10,000 years," Balch says.Balch says heat will also make things bad in the south and east."We're essentially pumping more atmospheric water into the atmosphere, and that that water becomes available for storms," she says.In the Mid-Atlantic, summer-like weather is lasting  a day longer, on average, each year. In the Northeast, it’ll be two days longer, and heat waves will become more common, scientists say.But just like in the south, warmer air also means more moisture for storms in the winter. With even more disasters comes more need, and after a while, those big fundraisers we see afterwards lose steam"Community solidarity that follows disaster is often times very short lived, because that pain and the suffering and the long-term recovery process starts to set in for families and for communities," explains Lori Peek, director of Natural Hazards Center.Fortunately for the Montoyas, the family received manpower help from pastor Joel Osteen's mega-church. They just got a new roof. Their hope: their kids can get back to normal and spend Christmas in all the rooms of their home.“I just want to be with my family for Christmas, sitting on the couch, drinking hot cocoa and just being together,” says Rico Montoya. And with the new weather realities, the Montoya family is just another reminder that this could be any one of us. 2568
