BEIJING, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Health said Thursday the spread of disease is a major public health concern in mudslide-hit Zhouqu County in northwest China, after local health facilities and water resources were damaged in the disaster."Only a small part of the township area was left after the mudslides. A large number of rescue and relief workers and survivors are now living there, increasing the risk of intestinal and respiratory infectious diseases," an unnamed official from the ministry said Thursday. The official said corpses and dead animals buried under the mud may easily decay under the high temperatures, worsening the epidemic-prevention situation.Although wells have been dug up to ensure water supply, the ministry said sterilization work is arduous as the water may be contaminated during transportation and preservation.Vaccines and their refrigeration facilities, along with the networks that report infectious diseases, were destroyed in the mudslides, according to the ministry. However, with the arrival of new refrigerators and various vaccines, the first vaccination center in the county since the disaster has been set up.As of 4:30 p.m. Thursday, the death toll from the mudslides had risen to 1,144 with 600 still missing.Furthermore, the Ministry of Environmental Protection has sent more than 20 experts to Zhouqu in a bid to prevent environmental disasters. The water quality of the Bailong River remains normal, according to the ministry.

ROME, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- The recovering of poplar forests in Siyang County in Eastern China's Jiangsu Province is benefiting rural life and agricultural activities, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said on Wednesday. Thanks to a joint program launched more than 30 years ago by the Rome-based agency and Italian plant research labs, new poplar forests have extended from 7 percent to 47 percent and are now covering more than 100,000 hectares of the county's land area.Today the poplar forests play a crucial role in restoring marginal flood plains and stabilizing the river banks. Large swaths of planted poplar trees now protect fields once ravaged by floods, wind, sandstorms and soil erosion, giving boost to agricultural production and benefiting 1 million farmers living in the county.According to the FAO, the Siyang case is an outstanding example of countryside reinforcement triggered by the successful application of the international transfer of germplasm, scientific knowledge and technology."Poplars are very fast-growing and amazingly resilient," said Jim Carle, leader of the Forestry Management Team at FAO. "They can grow in many sorts of ways and can easily integrate with other land uses, making them ideal for supporting animal husbandry, agriculture, aquaculture, viticulture and horticulture," he added. Some of the services provided by these multi-purpose trees include furnishing material for shelter, shade and dwellings, protecting crops and supplying fodder for livestock, as well as offering viable sources of bio-energy.Since the launch of the program the FAO has engaged Siyang farmers and smallholders in new income generating activities. The development of wood industries and resulting job creation has contributed to an improvement of the region's overall economic situation and an increase in the per capita income of both its urban and rural residents.China is now the world's biggest poplar growing country. It has become the key player in poplar cultivation and is able to transfer knowledge and technology also to other regions in Central Asia.

BEIJING, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) - The People's Bank of China (PBOC), also known as the central bank, said Thursday it would maintain its moderately loose monetary policy and enhance financial supports to boost the economy's sustainable development. The bank will apply multiple monetary tools to keep an appropriate growth in money supply in a bid to strike a balance between meeting the need of funding economic development and managing the inflation expectation, the PBOC said in a statement posted on its website. The PBOC reiterated it would maintain continuity and stability in monetary policy while, at the same time, making the policy more specific and more flexible. It vowed to improve the yuan's exchange rate mechanism, and increase financial support to promote the transformation of the economic growth pattern and adjustment of the economic structure.China's broad money supply (M2), which covers cash in circulation and all deposits, increased 18.5 percent year on year to 67.39 trillion yuan by the end of June, which marked a slowdown from the 21 percent increase at the end of May, the PBOC said.During the same period, narrow money supply (M1), cash in circulation plus current corporate deposits, climbed 24.6 percent from a year earlier to 24.06 trillion yuan, representing a decrease of 5.3 percentage points from the end of May, according to the PBOC.The bank also warned of potential domestic inflation risks due to complicated situations both at home and abroad.Increases in the costs of labor and environmental requirements, combined with continuing progresses in the reforms in the prices of resource products, will likely impact the inflation expectation.Meanwhile, the central bank pointed out that external 'hot money' may push up price hike pressures."The global monetary situation is relatively loose, as nations across the world have been prudent in their stimulus exits due to continuing uncertainties in the economic recovery. Excessive money is likely to seek various outlets, adding potential risks of inflation expectations," the PBOC said in its statement.
