The problem I brought up at the seminar last year has been solved in Beijing," wrote 34-year-old, wheelchair-bound Li Nan to Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Jan. 20 this year.The problem Li referred to was the high prices of one-off hygiene products that had plagued people with work-related spinal cord injuries for a long time.On Jan. 31, 2010, Wen talked with a group of ordinary people in Chaoyang District in Beijing to get their opinions on the draft of a government work report that will be submitted to the national legislature in March.Wen asked Li to be the first to voice her views at the seminar. Li said that patients with spinal cord injuries had to spend about 2,000 yuan (303 U.S. dollars) a month on one-off hygiene products because of their incontinence."My injury allowance is roughly 2,000 yuan a month. I have to live on my parents' pension," she said.She suggested giving more attention to the employment and mental health of the disabled, and also for some revisions on the catalogue of drug and auxiliary devices for those disabled by work-related injuries. She also proposed more subsidies for these people.Responding to the suggestions, Wen said, "Li Nan's case is far from an individual one. The disabled are a very large group of people in China who need more attention... We need to study, revise and renew the government regulations on work-related injury insurance."Wen also encouraged Li to be optimistic in face of ordeals.Li, who graduated from Beijing Youth Politics College in 1997, was once a prize-winning amateur dancer. TOKYO, May 21 (Xinhua) -- Japanese Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Banri Kaieda met with visiting Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming in Tokyo Saturday and agreed the two countries will promote bilateral trade to assist Japan's recovery after the March 11 quake and tsunami.Chen, who accompanied Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao to Japan, told Kaieda that China will offer "as much cooperation as possible to help Japan's reconstruction" by providing necessary supplies.Kaieda said Japan will strive to restore production and supply chain disrupted by the disasters as soon as possible.The two sides said they will conduct various investment and trade activities to strengthen cooperation and personnel exchange, and facilitate the smooth flow of bilateral trade so as to promote sustainable development.The two ministers signed a document on expanding bilateral economic and trade cooperation. The hearings, entitled "Protecting Mobile Privacy: Your Smartphones, Tablets, Cell Phones and Your Privacy," is scheduled to take place next Tuesday in the wake of an iPhone location database controversy.Tribble is one of the industry's top experts in software design and object-oriented programming, known for helping to design the Mac OS and user interface. He is considered as the right-hand man of Apple CEO Steve Jobs and has been with Jobs since they developed the original Macintosh. When Jobs was forced to resign from Apple in 1985, Tribble followed Jobs and co-founded another computer company NeXT Computer. WELLINGTON, May 13 (Xinhua) -- While it's long been known that a little sunshine can spread happiness, researchers in New Zealand have found that it can also save the lives of pneumonia patients.Medical scientists have found that vitamin D, which is absorbed through the skin and produced with exposure to sunlight, is a major factor in the survival rate of pneumonia patients.Researchers at Waikato University collaborated with doctors at Waikato Hospital, both Hamilton-based institutions, to study blood samples of 112 patients admitted to the hospital with pneumonia during the winter.They found that those with severe vitamin D deficiency 17 of the patients were more likely to die within a month, compared with patients with normal or slightly low vitamin D levels.Dr Bob Hancox, of the hospital's department of respiratory medicine, said five of the 17 died, a 29-percent mortality rate, compared with four deaths among the 95 patients with higher vitamin D levels, a 4-percent mortality rate."The analysis confirmed that the difference in mortality rates between the two groups was very unlikely to be due to chance," Hancox told Xinhua.Vitamin D deficiency was a concern around the world, Hancox said."Sunlight is the main source of vitamin D, so it tends to be a winter problem in temperate climates when people spend a lot of time indoors. But it occurs in all countries and vitamin D deficiency is believed to be a major problem worldwide."There is accumulating evidence that we need vitamin D to help fight infections, such as pneumonia as we have shown, as well as improve bone health," he told Xinhua."What is not yet clear is whether we can do anything about it. We don't know whether treating people with vitamin D supplements would help to prevent or treat respiratory infections. This is what we need to find out now."Dr Ray Cursons, of the Biological Sciences department at Waikato University, said patient age, sex, additional health conditions, and other prognostic factors did not affect the research outcome, although researchers still could not establish a causal link between vitamin D deficiency and mortality in the patients.Waikato Hospital D respiratory specialist Dr Noel Karalus said it was not yet known whether giving patients vitamin D supplements after their admission to hospital with respiratory tract infections would alter outcomes."It may transpire that vitamin D helps us avoid infection rather than cure it once established."Cursons said the best source of vitamin D was sunlight as dietary sources such as fatty fish and cod liver oil did not contain enough vitamin D."There is still some controversy regarding the optimal daily allowance of vitamin D. How much we absorb through the skin depends on sun exposure, skin type and geographical latitude. M ori and Pacific Islanders absorb less because of their darker skin, and people in colder climates also have lower levels of vitamin D. "Pneumonia is the single largest cause of death in children worldwide, killing an estimated 1.6 million children under the age of five each year, according to the World Health Organization.The research findings are published in the journal Respirology, published by the Asian Pacific Society of Respirology, this month.

BEIJING, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- China Thursday allocated 1.039 billion yuan (157 million U.S. dollars) for areas hit by natural disasters last year.The relief funds, jointly allocated by the Ministry of Civil Affairs and the Ministry of Finance, will be used for disaster survivors to buy food, clothes, quilts and heating devices.A Ministry of Civil Affairs statement said local finance and civil affairs authorities have been ordered to publicly disclose relevant information.In 2010, several natural disasters hit China, including the 7.1-magnitude Yushu earthquake that left 2,200 people dead and the Zhouqu mudslide that left 1,700 people dead or missing.On Nov. 18, 2010, the two ministries jointly allocated 4.1 billion yuan (617 million U.S. dollars) to help natural disaster survivors pass the winter.
