BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Wednesday China and the United States should make joint efforts to push forward cooperation on clean energy and climate change in a substantial way.     Wen said such cooperation is important work and in the interests of both countries and the world. He said the two countries should advance cooperation in this area to bring benefit to the human beings and future generations.     Wen made the remarks when meeting with participants of the Strategic Forum for U.S.-China Clean Energy Cooperation that began in Beijing Wednesday. The forum will last to Friday.     The forum was co-sponsored by the Chinese think tank China Institute of Strategy and Management and the Brookings Institution of the United States. Participants include Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang, former U.S. Vice President Al Gore and high-ranking officials from both governments. He said bilateral cooperation in this area has strategic significance and broad prospect.     Wen said the two sides should earnestly implement the agreement on the 10-year energy and environment cooperation framework they signed in June, 2008.     He called for the governments, enterprises and researching institutes of both countries to join effort for this end.     Wen said energy efficiency and environment protection are both a basic strategy of China to achieve sustainable economic and social development and a major measure to cope with climate changes.     The American guests made positive comments on the efforts that China has made in developing clean energy and addressing climate changes.     They expressed the wish that the two countries should set up common targets and carry out constructive, practical cooperation in this respect.

OTTAWA, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- After four years in office, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper will visit Beijing this week -- a trip many influential Canadians believe is long overdue.     To gauge Canadians' views of the Prime Minister's trip to China, Xinhua recently interviewed leading Canadian academics, former politicians and other opinion shapers.          A SIGNIFICANT TRIP     All the interviewees agree that this is a very significant trip, for both China and Canada, given China's stature on the world stage continues to grow.     "I think it is extremely important that China and Canada reenergize their relationship," David Emerson, Canada's former International Trade Minister, told Xinhua during a phone interview. He called the visit "an important milestone."     Former Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Pierre S. Pettigrew said the delay in making the visit was a bad start but the prime minister was correcting his mistakes.     "It took the prime minister a long time, almost four years in office before visiting China," he said.     However, Barbara McDougall, Canada's former Secretary of State for External Affairs in the early 1990s, said the timing of the Prime Minister's visit was good. "I think it will be a comfortable and productive meeting," McDougall said.     Peter Harder, President of the Canada-China Business Council, said it was an interesting moment for Harper's visit, given he was the chairman of the upcoming G8 and co-chairman of the G20 summits. Harder said the most important "deliverable" of this visit was that it took place.     "Traditionally, China and Canada have had very good relations, and this goes back a long time," said Gregory Chin, who served in Canada's embassy in Beijing from 2004 to 2006. This is an opportune moment for Prime Minister Harper and Chinese leaders to strengthen their personal relationship.     Jean Michel Laurin, Vice-President for Global Business Policy at Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters, said he expected the PM's visit to help "Canadian companies and Chinese companies do more business."          TRADE, CLIMATE CHANGE, ENERGY     The observers said trade, climate change, and energy cooperation were likely to be among the major areas of discussion.          Nevertheless, given the world economic turmoil since late last year, the state of the global economy would also be on the agenda of both leaders.     "China has been leading Asia into economic recovery, and is becoming a more important partner to both the United States and Canada. The economy will certainly be the (most) important topic (during the visit)," said Pettigrew.     Further fuelling these discussions of the economy is the fact that next summer, as Peter Harder noted, Canada will host two key international summits, the G8 and G20. China is an influential member of the G20.     Dr. Alan Alexandroff at the University of Toronto said it would be important for Prime Minister Harper to ask for President Hu's views about what ought to be on the agenda at the G20, so Canadians could learn more about China's priorities and interests.      THIS IS NOT A ONE-OFF VISIT     One question that always hovers over trips such as Harper's is what evidence will observers weigh in order to judge whether the visit was successful?     "No doubt, the Chinese leaders and the Canadian government will do everything they can to make this meeting successful," said Harder of the Canada China Business Council. "I hope they would commit to the idea that this is not a one-off visit but the first in a series of visits. The two leaders can instruct their ministers and government staff to enhance the Canada-China investment relationship." This could be a theme for further interactions and talks at future meetings.     "If I were planning this trip, I wouldn't have high expectations in terms of particular accomplishments. I would have expectations about rebalancing bilateral relationships in a positive way, so that the two countries can work together on global issues," said McDougall, who used to hold a variety of ministerial level positions in Canadian government.     Emerson said the meeting sent a signal that Canada and China were continuing to build on their friendship and partnership that had existed between the two countries for many years. He said: "Ties cooled down in recent years. And it's time to get back down to building up friendship again."     In April, Canada's Minister of International Trade, Stockwell Day, announced that Canada would open new trade offices this year in Nanjing, Qingdao, Shenyang and Wuhan.     China-Canada economic ties have evolved from small, simple-item commodity trade into an all-dimensional cooperation covering trade in commodity and services, capital flows and personnel exchanges.     According to Chinese statistics, two-way trade increased more than 100 times from 150 million U.S. dollars in the early days of China-Canada diplomatic relations to 15.5 billion dollars in 2004.

BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here Tuesday he and visiting U.S. President Barack Obama agreed during their talks to resolve the nuclear issues of the Korean Peninsula and Iran through dialogue.     "Both of us remain committed to resolving the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula through dialogue and consultation," Hu said when meeting the press with Obama after their bilateral talks. "Such a commitment serves the common interests of China and the United States and all other parties concerned."     Hu said China and the United States will work with other parties concerned to stick to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the six-party talks process to safeguard the peace and stability of northeast Asia.     The two presidents stressed that it is very important for the stability in the Middle East and the Gulf Region to uphold the international nuclear non-proliferation regime and properly resolve the Iran nuclear issue through dialogue and negotiation, Hu said. 

BEIJING, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Monday called on health authorities to ensure safety in the production, storage, transportation, and inoculation process of the vaccines against A/H1N1 influenza, for the health of the public.     Li made the remarks when visiting the Beijing-based National Institute for the Control of Pharmaceutical and Biological Products, where the country's self-developed vaccines against the A/H1N1 flu are tested. BEIJING, Dec. 26 -- European fashion retailers are accelerating business expansion in China thanks to the nation's increasing number of fashion-conscious consumers.     Two companies that opened new outlets in China at a rapid pace this year included Sweden's H&M and Spain's Zara, both retailers of clothing and accessories for adults and youth.     H&M is ending this year with a total of 13 new stores, raising the company portfolio in China to 27 outlets, while Zara, opened 33 new stores in China, winding down the year with 60 in total.     "In China, new store openings have more than doubled due to strong domestic consumption, which has not been affected by the global financial downturn," said Wu Shuang, public relations manager of H&M China. Globally, H&M store openings are up between 10 percent and 15 percent in 2009, said Wu.     "More H&M stores will be set up in China next year, especially in the second-tier cities," he said.     H&M, Europe's second largest fast-fashion retailer, entered the Hong Kong and Shanghai markets in 2007 and later expanded its business to second-tier cities like Hangzhou and Ningbo of Zhejiang province.     Back in August, H&M sales in Spain, the US and France were down 11 percent over July sales, the fourth consecutive monthly drop.     In 2008, average sales revenue at H&M stores in the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong was up 23 percent to 59 million yuan, while globally average store sales was 48 million yuan.     "We are expecting favorable sales volume in China this year," said Wu, while declining to elaborate further.     Strong sales numbers were also recorded at Zara, the leading fast-fashion retailer in Europe. "The Chinese market is attractive with its soaring consumer spending power," a Zara promotion executive said on condition of anonymity. Chinese consumers can expect to see more Zara 'fast fashion' stores in the future," he said.     Fast fashion is a term used to describe fashion trends that are manufactured quickly in smaller batches to keep inventories down and allow mainstream consumers to take advantage of current clothing styles at lower prices. This type of quick manufacturing methodology is preferred by large retailers like H&M, Forever 21 and Zara, according to online apparel industry directory, Apparel Search.     This access to the latest clothing styles is popular with white-collar consumers in China.     "I have been waiting for 30 minutes to try on several pieces of clothing, but the wait doesn't matter. I love to get everything here, and the prices are acceptable," said Liu Dan, a woman in her 20s shopping at one of Zara's Beijing stores. Liu, who works in the public relations department at an international company, said she is also a regular patron of H&M in Beijing. Both H&M and Zara stores are often crowded with local consumers, especially on the weekends.
