SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A judge ruled Friday that Alvin Quarles, known as the “Bolder Than Most Rapist," will continue to stay in a state hospital until at least December. A status hearing was held Friday morning to get an update on the location of where he will live. The search is still ongoing to find a location, and the judge has given the court a 90-day extension to do that. In the meantime, the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office has issued an appeal to pump the brakes on Quarles’ release. The Deputy District Attorney, Jessica Coto, says they are attempting to make sure Quarles is not released into the public before he is ready. “The evidence showed that the release of Mr. Quarles was premature and that he still poses a danger to the community,” says Coto. There have been many evidentiary hearings during this process that have not been open to the public. Quarles' victims feel they should have a right to know what was said behind closed doors. The DA's office is hoping that will be reversed during the appeal process. “It makes me shaky for myself personally, and it makes me shaky for the young people of our community, who is his demographic, and who I think really will be at risk,” said survivor Mary Taylor. In the 1980s, Quarles sexually assaulted more than 10 women, often holding them at knifepoint, forcing their boyfriends or husbands to watch as be brutally attacked them. He was sentenced to 50 years behind bars but was moved to Colinga State Hospital years ago to get treatment for sexually violent predators. Quarles was initially set to be housed in Jacumba Hot Springs, but that idea was shut down. Another status hearing has been set for Dec. 6. 1694

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Wendy Caceres smiled as two salon workers doted over her hair and makeup. It was a momentary break from the last two-and-a-half months when she's been worried about many things, least of all herself.On August 15, Caceres gave birth to her son Santino at 29 weeks. He's been in the NICU at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital ever since."Very traumatizing, honestly," Caceres said over the hum of hair dryers at Robert Cromeans Salon downtown. "I don't take time for myself really," she said. "It's really cool they did this, honestly."Caceres was one of eight NICU moms treated to a hair and makeup makeover at the salon Monday during an event organized by March of Dimes.The event came on the same day the March of Dimes released a report card showing the premature birth rate in the U.S. rose for the fourth straight year to 10.02 percent.Preterm birth rates worsened in 30 states. California fared better than the national average. In San Diego County, the rate actually improved year-over-year to 8.4 percent.It's still largely a mystery why some women deliver early. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While enjoying a moment at the park over the weekend, a Carlsbad family was on the receiving end of an act of kindness from a stranger. The family says they are now hoping to find that person to say thank you.After months of staying at home, the family was excited to spend a day at Buccaneer Park in Oceanside. Eleven-year-old Jacobi and 12-year-old Jordan couldn’t wait to get outside.“They’re too old of the playground area, the swings and things like that,” says mom Tamara Coronado. “They look forward to the open space, the grass area, and definitely the basketball courts.”But Coronado says park officials had not yet reinstalled the basketball hoops, something the boys were looking forward to. The kids were left to make up their own games. It caught the attention of one man.“Forty-five minutes to an hour later, he came back… with a crafting reef from Dollar Tree and a very small basketball that would fit inside.”The man used a power drill to attach the wreath to a tree to form a makeshift hoop so that the boys could play basketball.“All that he asked was that we leave the wreath and the ball in place so that after we left, other families could use it,” says Coronado. “But the fact that he went out of his way like he did was, I just couldn’t believe it.”The mom says even though a lot is going on around the country, she wants others to know there are still kind people in the world. The family didn’t get the man’s name, but they’re hoping to find him to say thank you.“He may have not thought twice about it, and hasn’t thought about it since, but he really touched me and my family.” 1632
