SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More and more local high school students are slashing college tuition costs, free of charge. From the cheer squad to the lacrosse team, junior Katie Quis' schedule at Rancho Bernardo High is packed. That's not counting her Tuesdays and Thursday, when she heads to Miramar College for a calculus class. The class is her third at Miramar College since last summer; part of the dual enrollment program which offers college-credit classes to high school students at no cost. The benefit of the calculus class could multiply if it helps her score well on the AP Calculus exam."I could end up getting double the credits, than if I just took the AP test or class," said Quis, 16.RELATED: Making It In San Diego: What you need to know about free tuition at San Diego community collegesBy the time she graduates, Quis will have roughly 30 units, which translates into about a year of college."It helps save my parents of a lot of money for college down the road," said Quis. The numbers add up quickly. Counting room and board, and tuition, Quis says knocking off the extra year of college could save between ,000 and ,000.RELATED: This university is offering free tuition to families that bring in less than 0K"Feels really good!" said Quis. She's hardly alone. Since spring 2015, dual enrollment for high school students at Miramar College has jumped from 320 to about 2,000 students.Naomi Grisham heads the college's Transfer Center.RELATED: Making it in San Diego: State offers money to help boost college savings accounts"With college costs increasing, we expect dual enrollment to continue rising," said Grisham."College costs can cause my parents a lot of stress. So it'll be nice to save them that stress," said Quis. The grades go on a student's college record, so experts say check with a counselor to make sure dual enrollment is the right option. 1880

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Near Crystal Pier, an unusual sight greeted residents and beach visitors in North Pacific Beach: a multi-million dollar home spray-painted with graffiti. Feet from Palisades Park is an impressive home, perched on a bluff and boasting a pristine view. That home is now adorned with something not so pristine."Not good. It's an eyesore for the area. Spoils the whole look for the area," said Nick Tulip, a tourist from England.Neighbors say the large tagging appeared on the home over the weekend. "This kind of stuff I've never seen before, so I hope it won't be trending," said Elise Bernier, who lives in the area.Just to the south, along other parts of the shore, the sight of graffiti is more common, especially as school lets out for the summer. Neighbors in North Pacific beach are concerned that could be headed in their direction."It's an early sign of what's to come," said Ron Calkins, a retired firefighter who has seen tagging escalate in other areas."Other people are going to cross it off and put their own tags up. It turns into a stupid turf war between people that don't even live here ... just going to get worse unless there is more enforcement," said Calkins. The possibility that there is more to come is an uneasy feeling in an area known for tranquility."Totally disrupts the beauty of what's going on," said Bernier. 1365

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are investigating after a 19-year-old was shot in Chicano Park Wednesday night. According to San Diego Police, the teen was walking with a group of men in the park just before 7 p.m. when an argument broke out and an unknown suspect pulled out a handgun. Several shots were fired at the 19-year-old, who was hit twice by the gunfire, police say. The victim ran away from the scene and was taken to the hospital by an acquaintance. He sustained non-life threatening injuries, police say. Both the victim and acquaintance were unable to provide any details about the shooting. All of a sudden I heard a cracking sound and we just plunged to the ground.”Police and firefighters carried one scared child after another out of the building after the platform collapsed.Parent’s received frantic phone calls and scrambled to find their children.RELATED: Teen girl has broken bones after Barrio Logan platform collapse, city continues its investigationBut it was Ian who rushed to his mom’s side. “Her head was against the wall and I thought if that falls that's going to hit her neck. So I’m like mom, get up, get up.”Ian says he then started clearing the wood and the blood-stained glass. "I said, I'm fine, I'm fine, nothing happened to me. I was more concerned with my mom instead of myself because I love her and stuff.”"He just said I didn't want you to worry about me because I knew you were so hurt,” said Blair. 1544
