SHANGHAI, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- The China Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo welcomed the 8 millionth visitor Saturday as a senior pavilion official announced its exhibition would run for another six months, beginning Dec.1."The China Pavilion's exhibitions will be extended for half a year beginning Dec.1 to meet people's needs", said Qian Zhiguang, deputy director of the China Pavilion on Saturday. The China Pavilion, named "The Crown of the East", has become increasingly popular since the World Expo open on May 1, with an average of 50,000 visitors daily. However, space restrictions have resulted in many visitors being turned away during the Expo, which closes at the end of October.Further, the China Pavilion is negotiating with local museums which are displaying historical items, to continue showing these national treasures, including bronze chariots and horses from the Qin Emperor, ancient porcelain, and invaluable Chinese paintings from 800 years ago.The China Pavilion is one of the permanent structures that will remain after the World Expo.

SHANGHAI, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- China will continue to promote gradual exchange rate reforms, even while the yuan is expected to stabilize at a reasonable level, said Yi Gang, head of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE) Monday in Shanghai.Yi, also deputy governor of the People's Bank of China (PBOC), or the central bank, made the remarks at a seminar held by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to discuss the theme "Macro-Prudential Policies -- an Asian Perspective"."The flexibility of the yuan has increased since China launched exchange rate reforms in June. We will further boost those reforms, but the process will be gradual," Yi said."Judging from the markets, the yuan can remain stable at a reasonable and balanced level," he said.China will also continue to expand domestic demand and boost construction in rural medical services, education and infrastructure, he said.Five years ago, China abandoned a decade-old peg to the U.S. dollar and allowed its currency to fluctuate against a basket of currencies and appreciate by 2.1 percent.Since then, the yuan has strengthened further, albeit slowly, and has risen more than 21 percent against the greenback. On June 19 this year, the Chinese central bank announced that it would further reform the yuan's exchange rate mechanism to improve its flexibility.

TIANJIN, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese legislator on Saturday said China is drafting a law to act to combat climate change, a move that signals the country's proactive role in honoring its commitment to curtailing emissions, among other measures, in tackling climate change."The responsibility of lawmakers is to urge the government to take concrete steps to meet its promises," Chen Zhili, vice chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), told experts attending a two-day forum on climate change legislation being held in Tianjin beginning Saturday.Chen said despite a broad range of government issues, China is taking serious measures in dealing with climate change and has achieved remarkable progress.Chen said lawmakers will particularly base China's climate change legislation on a resolution passed by the NPC last August. The resolution says China will adhere to "the basic framework" set up in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), signed by more than 150 countries in 1992, and the Kyoto Protocol, agreed to in 1997 by the majority of the international community, to set binding targets for developed countries to reduce CO2 emissions, along with the principles of UNFCCC-endorsed "common but differentiated responsibilities" as well as "sustainable development."Chen said many developing countries are gravely suffering from the damage caused by extreme weathers this year. The international community should provide greater support to these countries in terms of finance, technical support, and capability building to boost their ability to deal with natural disasters.More than 60 lawmakers and law experts from 16 countries and regions are participating in the Tianjin forum on climate change legislation, co-hosted by the NPC and Global Legislators Organization for a Better Environment.

BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator, Wu Bangguo, has urged government departments to take effective measures to solve shortages of drinking water and improve the living standards for residents in an impoverished northwestern area of the country."It is a long-term strategic task and an urgent livelihood project to improve the environment and basic living standards in the impoverished areas in Ningxia," said Wu Bangguo during an inspection in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.Wu, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, urged officials to solve the region's drinking water problem in about three years and accelerate the evacuation of local residents to places with better environment.Wu Bangguo (2nd L), chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, the country's top legislature, inspects a paper manufacture enterprise of northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Sept. 11, 2010. Wu made an inspection tour in Ningxia from Sept. 10 to 14With an inhospitable natural environment coupled with a severe ongoing drought, the central and southern regions of Ningxia are one of the key impoverished areas for the country to support.Wu visited a mountainous village called Haigou, where the average annual income per capita is only about 2,700 yuan (400 U.S. dollars). Some 251 villagers of the Hui ethnic group are living in the village, and they have been suffering shortages of drinking water due to water and soil losses.
