Federal health officials reported Thursday an additional 109 cases of cyclospora infection in an ongoing outbreak linked to McDonald's salads that began in May.The total number of laboratory-confirmed illnesses from this outbreak is now 395, according to a?statement from the US Food and Drug Administration. At least 16 of the sick individuals have been hospitalized.The cyclospora parasite causes intestinal illness in people who consumed contaminated food or water. Symptoms can begin a week or more after consuming the parasite. They include diarrhea and frequent, sometimes explosive bowel movements, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Those who are infected might also experience loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps or pain, nausea, gas and fatigue. Vomiting, headache, fever, body aches and flu-like symptoms can also occur.The illness can last a few days to a few months, and patients might feel better but then get worse again. Cyclosporiasis can be treated with antibiotics.Illnesses have been reported in 15 states: Connecticut, Florida, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia and Wisconsin. However, the patients in Connecticut, Michigan, Tennessee and Virginia bought their salads in Illinois while traveling, and the Florida patient bought the salad in Kentucky.The FDA said an unused package of a Fresh Express salad mix of romaine lettuce and carrots that had been distributed to McDonald's tested positive for the presence of Cyclospora though it was past its July 19 expiration date."Epidemiologic evidence indicates that salads purchased from McDonald's restaurants are one likely source of these infections. The investigation is ongoing, and FDA is working to determine the sources of the ingredients that were in common to the salads served at McDonald's," the CDC said in an outbreak update posted on its website Thursday.McDonald's said in a?statement on July 13 that it had removed the salad mix from it's impacted restaurants and replaced it with a different supplier.In a?recall statement?on the Fresh Express website, the company said it had launched a "precautionary recall" of the institutional food service product on July 27 of a "limited number of cases."The statement said, "Fresh Express follows rigid food safety requirements and preventive controls throughout our supply chain that are carefully designed to mitigate against potential health risks."The company's salad mix recall was connected with a?public health alert issued Monday by the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service advising consumers that certain salad and wrap products might be contaminated with cyclospora. The products were sold by grocery stores including Kroger, Trader Joe's and Walgreens.In the alert, the USDA said the issue was discovered when Indianapolis-based food distributor Caito Foods "received notification from their lettuce supplier, Fresh Express, that the chopped romaine that is used to manufacture some of their salads and wraps was being recalled."The lettuce from McDonald's that tested positive for the cyclospora parasite was in the same lot as the lettuce distributed to Caito Foods, the CDC said Wednesday. (KGTV) - The 'Golden State Killer' arrest is shining the spotlight on a controversial DNA search known as Familial DNA.    In the summer of 2013, local communities were gripped by fear amid a string of unspeakable crimes.An unknown culprit dubbed 'The Creeper' entered five homes in Escondido and one in San Marcos, cutting screens, cutting the clothes of little girls and molesting them while they slept.The suspect left DNA at several scenes, but a search turned up no matches.  Ultimately the case went cold until detectives applied to the State Department of Justice - for a DNA familial search.In 2015, the mystery DNA profile was linked to somebody already in the system, a close relative of the suspect."They were able to determine through a familial search who the suspect likely was," said Deputy District Attorney Ryan Saunders.That suspect was Gilbert Chavarria, who recently pleaded guilty to a host of charges.  He was sentenced to 100 years to life in prison."Police did an excellent job gathering the evidence, but the leads were exhausted. Without the familial searches, we'd still be on our hands waiting," said Saunders.It marked the first use of the search in a local case.  Amid concerns from privacy advocates, Governor Brown in 2008 enacted a policy that familial DNA would be used only as a last resort.It's been rarely used but did provide the break in several serial killer cases, including the 'Grim Sleeper' case and now, the 'Golden State Killer' case.  In the latter, the mystery DNA was linked to a familial profile from an ancestry website.Some law enforcement experts tell 10News the recent cases could lead to a lot more requests for the DNA search.  Familial DNA also provided the break in the infamous 'BTK' serial killer case in Kansas. 1858

(KGTV) - Police are investigating an elaborate phone scam that cost an Encinitas woman ,400.Lauren Kennedy says she was driving to work Wednesday morning when she received a phone call around 8:30 a.m. She says she had just gotten off the phone with her mother when all of a sudden she was calling her back.But when she answered, it wasn’t her mother’s voice.“It was a man’s voice telling me he had abducted my mother and he was going to kill her if I didn't do exactly as he told me,” Kennedy said.Kennedy said it became so real when she heard her mother’s voice on the other line.“At that point, that’s when I knew it was real," she said. "I heard her in the background, and I thought for sure that they had taken her.”The man on the other line directed her to go to the nearest grocery store and put money into Money Pak cards. Then they demanded the card numbers over the phone and ordered her to destroy the cards afterward.They told her to cut up the cards and email them photo evidence that they had been destroyed.“At that time he hung up and never called me back,” she explained. “So within a minute or two, I called my mom’s phone and at that time, she answered.”That’s when Kennedy’s realized she had fallen victim to an elaborate phone scam.The Sheriff’s Department says the scammers used a “spoofing device” to make it look like the phone was made from her mother’s phone number.The scammers also called Kennedy’s’ mother in the middle of the fake ransom call. They got her worked up by saying they had her daughter.“They just wanted her to be scared and sound scared. All I heard was her saying my name. I still can't believe it," Kennedy said. “I think their whole intention with calling her was to have her voice in the background while they were asking me to do whatever they wanted me to do." Kennedy says she not sure how the scammers got her information or her mother’s. She says she is always careful with her information and weary of scams.“I don't answer phone calls I don't recognize,” she said. “I don't answer blocked numbers. I let people leave voicemails to determine if it’s legit or not. I feel like the public needs to know about this (scam) because if I can fall for this, anybody can fall for this.”In an email, to 10News the Sheriff’s Department says people should hang up when they get phone calls like this and should immediately call law enforcement.Kennedy says that's what her mother did when she go the call, but for her  - it’s easier said than done.“This was life or death," she said. Facebook has removed a campaign ad by President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence that featured an upside-down red triangle. That symbol was once used by Nazis to designate political prisoners, communists and others in concentration camps. Nathaniel Gleicher, the company’s head of security policy, confirmed at a House Intelligence Committee hearing Thursday that the ad had been removed. He says Facebook does not permit symbols of hateful ideology “unless they’re put up with context or condemnation.”Facebook has the following policy involving hate speech:"We define hate speech as a direct attack on people based on what we call protected characteristics — race, ethnicity, national origin, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, caste, sex, gender, gender identity, and serious disease or disability. FARMINGTON, Utah — A man faces felony charges after he admitted to stabbing a woman and throwing her out of a moving car in Sunday night, killing her. At about 9:50 p.m., emergency dispatch started receiving calls about a body in traffic on northbound I-15. Witnesses reported seeing a vehicle driving erratically and nearly hitting the median."A short time later, witnesses stated a person or what appeared to be a body came out of the vehicle on the driver side. The vehicle then continued for a distance continuing to drive erratically before it came to a stop," a probable cause statement said.A Davis County Sheriff's Office deputy made contact with Oscar Cuevas-Landa near State St. and Main St. in Farmington.According to the probable cause statement, Cuevas-Landa had blood on his hand, forearm and pants, and he was wearing no shirt and only one shoe."After being advised of his Miranda [rights] the subject spoke about the incident stating that he had stabbed the victim multiple times, unbuckled her seat belt, reached over and opened the door and then pushed the victim out of the driver side door," the statement said.Investigators believe Cuevas-Landa had hitched a ride with the victim, whom he didn't know."During that journey, [Cuevas-Landa] stated that the victim looked at him funny, so he stabbed the victim several times and then pushed the victim (driver) from a vehicle moving at freeway speeds," the probable cause statement said.Cuevas-Landa also told investigators he had been using marijuana and LSD.A State Bureau of Investigation agent responded to the area where witnesses reported seeing the body and found the woman dead.Police didn't identify the victim, but said she suffered extensive injuries , including two wounds consistent with stabbing injuries.Cuevas-Landa faces a first-degree felony charge of murder and a second-degree felony charge of aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury.This story originally reported by David Wells on fox13now.com. 2006
