SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Normal Street in Hillcrest Friday, things were anything but normal.   Tim Henderson and his colleagues were checking email in the street."Just a minute ago, we had a meeting out here," he says while pointing to an assortment of chairs.    He and his co-workers at KTUA, a landscape architecture and planning firm, set up a little home office in a spot usually occupied by 3 to 4 parked cars.   The space was decorated with plants and patio furniture.Welcome to “Park(ing) Day 2017,” billed as a worldwide event where artists and designers transform metered parking spots into temporary public parks.    The event ran Friday from 9AM – 3PM, with several downtown businesses also taking park."We're in a ‘car-centric’ world, we always have to supply places for cars,” Tim explained.  “We're making a statement: during some part of the year, you can come out into a space not  being used for cars -- and have a park!"Henderson and his work buddies barbecued in the parking spots and even roasted s’mores.Parking is at a premium in Hillcrest, but Henderson said nobody seemed to mind them taking up the spots.    In fact, he said drivers had been slowing down to catch a glimpse at the “front yard” they created on the street.“They love it,” he said. 1351

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Nearly 1,000 students and volunteers will work together to clean Mission Beach Thursday as part of this year's Kids' Ocean Day. After removing the litter, students will create an aerial art image that will read "WAVES OF CHANGE" to advocate for a safer, cleaner ocean.Humans deposit eight million metric tons of plastic into the world's oceans every year. Plastics break down into smaller and smaller pieces called microplastics, which are dangerous to both marine life and people. San Diego’s event was coordinated locally by I Love A Clean San Diego (ILACSD). It is one of five happening across the state.DetailsWhen: Thursday, May 24, 2018 from 8:00 a.m- 12:00 p.m 714

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are investigating an altercation at a University Heights apartment complex that left a man dead early Thursday morning. The incident was reported shortly before 4 a.m. at an apartment building on Howard Avenue near Mississippi Street, according to San Diego police.Police said someone reported two men fighting, but when officers arrived both men were injured. The two men were taken to the hospital, but one of them died from apparent stab wounds, police told ABC 10Ne 502

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are investigating after a 19-year-old was shot in Chicano Park Wednesday night. According to San Diego Police, the teen was walking with a group of men in the park just before 7 p.m. when an argument broke out and an unknown suspect pulled out a handgun. Several shots were fired at the 19-year-old, who was hit twice by the gunfire, police say. The victim ran away from the scene and was taken to the hospital by an acquaintance. He sustained non-life threatening injuries, police say. Both the victim and acquaintance were unable to provide any details about the shooting. The San Diego Police Department’s gang unit is investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 745

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Neighbors say overnight surveillance video of a tagger in action is a glimpse of an ongoing, frustrating problem.Near Euclid Avenue and Polk Avenue, there is a church, an elementary school, and a sight Leanne Montano has seen before."Sad they're destroying someone else's property," said Montano.Video shows what unfolded just down the street. Just before 2 a.m., a motion-activated light flashes, but these vandals are undeterred. With another man and a person on a bike nearby, someone in a cap and hoodie casually begins spray painting the back wall of a home. For more than 40 seconds, he tags the wall, before he and his cohorts leave. It appears they weren't done. 10News found similar tags on fences, and garage door after garage door. A block away at Euclid Elementary, there was more graffiti. Montano's place was spared, but her home has been hit several times before. She says tagging - including the school - is a weekly occurrence."Tagging leads to other activities that aren't safe. My concern as a parent and resident is the children's safety and them walking to school, feeling safe. It allows other people to treat our neighborhood like crap. If we don't take pride in our neighborhood, who else is going to?" said Montano. The City of San Diego offers rewards up to 0 for the arrest and conviction of graffiti vandals. 1364
