Chick-fil-A thinks the future of fast food isn't in the restaurant; it's in your living room.Last week, the company opened up two prototype restaurants devoted exclusively to fulfilling delivery and catering orders. Over the summer, the company started testing out a meal kit service.Chick-fil-A believes people think about food the way they think about shopping: Why go to a store when you can order online? To stay ahead of that trend, Chick-fil-A is getting creative about how to reach people at home, work and parties — and it's miles ahead of the competition."Our mission is to be convenient," said Luke Pipkin, who works on innovation within the company's Beyond the Restaurant team, which is dedicated to exploring off-premise opportunities like delivery, catering and meal kits.The new restaurants don't have dining rooms, so the locations have larger kitchens. They're also cash-free: Customers have to use DoorDash or a credit or debit card. Chick-fil-A encourages customers to order directly from its mobile app. And Chick-fil-A put the locations by highways and major roads in Nashville and Louisville to facilitate deliveries.That makes the test locations "pretty differentiated from our regular restaurants," Pipkin said.Chick-fil-A isn't alone: All fast food companies are trying to figure out ways to reach people at home and get more customers to use their apps.Nearly two-thirds of consumers say that more fast food restaurants should offer delivery and takeout options, according to research company Mintel. And 46% said that they'd be more inclined to pick up an order from a restaurant if there was a dedicated pick-up area.Mintel also found that in the three months ending in September, 27% of people surveyed said they ordered delivery directly from a restaurant online or through an app, and 13% said they ordered delivery from a third party.The "off-premise business is really booming within the food service sector," said Amanda Topper, associate director of foodservice research at Mintel.Chick-fil-A is well ahead of the curve. While the chicken chain is going cashless and opening restaurants without dining rooms, competitors are working on streamlining their digital pickup areas and using promotions to raise awareness for their apps."They've seemed to be deploying a number of innovations ahead of the industry," said Melissa Wilson, a principal with the food service consulting company Technomic.Plus, catering is an important part of the restaurant's business. About "14% of Chick-fil-A customers try Chick-fil-a for the first time through catering," said Pipkin.Overall, Chick-fil-A's methods are working.The chain has grown "exponentially" in recent years, said Wilson. Chick-fil-A is a private company, so its sales figures aren't public, but Technomic's research found that Chick-fil-A generated billion in sales in 2017. Three years before that figure was about .8 billion, Wilson said."They test things very carefully," she added. "They are very thoughtful."Customers love Chick-fil-A. In a sector where customers tend to be brand-agnostic, "they benefit from having a really strong brand loyalty," said Topper.That may be why the brand is comfortable testing out creative concepts, she said. Customers are likely to stick with Chick-fil-A even if the meal kits or new locations are a flop.The company is moving slowly, for now. Meal kits are being offered for just a few months in Atlanta. Once the test ends, in mid-November, Chick-fil-A will decide if and how to move forward.The company plans to open more catering- and delivery-only restaurants next year, Pipkin said.If Chick-fil-A is successful, other companies may follow its lead, Topper said. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The city of Chula Vista is hoping "Granny Flats" will help ease the county's affordable housing crisis. Tuesday night, the city council unanimously voted to approve a series of changes designed to make it cheaper and easier to apply for a permit to build a granny flat or "accessory dwelling unit." The ordinance brings the city into state compliance. California lawmakers passed a measure last year loosening the regulation and reducing some fees associated with building. Chula Vista added a regulation aimed at preventing the units from becoming short-term vacation rentals. Under Chula Vista's ordinance, the homeowner must live on the property. Max Zaker owns a real estate company in Eastlake. He's also running for Chula Vista City Council. He said the city must find a way to keep up with its growth. "The average price for a two-bedroom condo is about ,700 to ,800 a month, so imagine a kid right out of college, they just got their first job. There's no way they're going to be able to afford it. So, if there was a granny flat they could stay at home," said Zaker. The new rules also eliminate parking requirements in some cases. If the property is located within half a mile from a public transit stop, the homeowner is no longer required to provide parking. "The whole idea is to make these affordable and less cumbersome and less excessive requirements," said Michael Walker, Chula Vista's senior planner. Walker estimates the reduction in fees could be a savings of roughly ,500. On average, the city only gets roughly 10 permit applications a month. City leaders hope that will change with the relaxed rules. "We are hoping this will encourage other types of residential development to happen in Chula Vista so we can increase our housing stock because we have to," said Zaker. (CNS) - Homicide detectives Thursday were investigating the death of a man found in a Chula Vista bank parking lot.At about 10:25 p.m. Wednesday, a 911 caller reported finding a man down on the ground with blood surrounding him in the parking lot of the Bank America branch on E Street and Third Avenue, Chula Vista police Lt. Jason Deaner said.Officers responded to the scene and found the man with apparent wounds on his body, Deaner said. The man, whose age was not immediately available, was pronounced dead at the scene.The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office was called in and will perform an autopsy on the man to determine the cause and manner of death, the lieutenant said.No further details were immediately available. 763

(KGTV) -- The Sweetwater Union High School District’s reopening plan for the 2020-21 was approved by its board Monday, with the school year set to begin Aug. 3 via distance learning.The district first announced its reopening plan during a meeting on July 23.From Aug. 3-Oct. 2, all classes will be virtual -- based on public health orders issued by the state.To start the year, while distance learning, students will be on a daily block schedule. Students will have three classes a day with 30-45 minutes of face time with their teacher and 45-60 minutes of class spent as independent study.Devices for distance learning will be available for all students. Chopped romaine lettuce grown in the Yuma, Arizona, area is to blame for a multistate E. coli outbreak, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday."At this time, no common grower, supplier, distributor, or brand has been identified," the CDC said.So far 35 cases of E. coli illness in 11 states have been reported and linked to the outbreak. The earliest symptoms began on March 22. Twenty-two of the ill individuals have been hospitalized. Three of those patients developed a type of kidney failure associated with an E. coli illness called hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can be life-threatening.Symptoms of E. coli typically begin two to eight days after consuming the bacteria, although most patients become ill three or four days after consumption. Symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting. Most people recover in five to seven days. Those most at risk for E. coli illness include the very young, the very old and individuals with compromised immune systems.Health officials warned the public to stay away from chopped romaine lettuce. "Consumers anywhere in the United States who have store-bought chopped romaine lettuce at home, including salads and salad mixes containing chopped romaine lettuce, should not eat it and should throw it away, even if some of it was eaten and no one has gotten sick. If you do not know if the lettuce is romaine, do not eat it and throw it away," the CDC said.Restaurants and stores are advised not to serve or sell chopped romaine lettuce.In addition, the agency recommends asking grocery stores and restaurants to confirm their chopped romaine is not from Yuma.The advice is based on interviews with 28 of the ill individuals in which 93% of them reported consuming romaine lettuce within the week they began feeling sick."Most people reported eating a salad at a restaurant, and romaine lettuce was the only common ingredient identified among the salads eaten. The restaurants reported using bagged, chopped romaine lettuce to make salads," according to the investigation report which also noted there are no reports involving whole heads or hearts of romaine.The CDC and the US Food and Drug Administration are continuing to work with state and local health officials to further identify the source of the contaminated romaine.The-CNN-Wire 2332
