SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Family members of a woman behind an Oscar-nominated film are preparing a big bash on Sunday night.Inside a home in Del Derro, the party decor is going up. The catering menu has been decided."I feel like crying. So excited for her," said Tamara Berton."This is extra special," said Robert Berton.From a proud father to an emotional sister, the Oscar anticipation is climbing for the short documentary: "Period. End of Sentence.""It's been a profound experience from start to finish," said Melissa Berton. The journey for Patrick Henry High graduate and English teacher Melissa Berton began in 2013. She advised a group of students at her North Hollywood school, selected as United Nation delegates to advocate for women and girls, where they learned about the taboo nature of menstruation in parts of India.They formed a nonprofit called the Pad Project, in hopes of getting a machine to create biodegradable pads to a rural village in India. Through a Kickstarter campaign and bake sales, Berton and her students raised more than ,000 for the machine - and a film."We never thought it would be an Oscar-nominated film, but the idea was always, if we could just make an educational film to raise awareness about this issue then that would be the jewel of the nonprofit," said Berton, who is the film's Executive Producer.The film was put on the film festival circuit, receiving award after award. On Sunday night, expect the film's biggest cheering section to be in San Diego."It really wasn't really for herself. It was for others and that's what make me most proud of her ... It will be a thrilling night no matter what happens, especially so if she wins the Oscar," said Berton.The film has received some Hollywood backing. (KGTV) - As the dual-threat of wildfires and climate change grows, one company says an old method of home building could be the answer to both problems.Rebecca Tasker is the CEO of Simple Construct. Her company builds homes out of straw bales.And, yes, she's heard all of the jokes."I've heard every single 'Three Little Pigs' joke you can think of," Tasker says. "Some good ones, some not so good ones."But the idea of straw bale homes is serious to Tasker."These homes, once they're plastered, are more fire-resistant than conventional homes," she says.The secret is in the construction. Tasker uses high-grade straw bales that are packed solid. She says that makes them like phone books, so they smolder instead of igniting in flames. Also, the plaster her company uses to cover the walls is made from dirt, clay, and more straw. The mixture gives the homes a 1-2 hour fire-resistance rating. Most homes only get a 30-minute rating."The oxygen can't get in to burn," Tasker says.In addition to the fire resistance, Tasker says the homes are environmentally friendly. The thick bales provide a two-foot layer of natural insulation. That blocks sound to 50 decibels. It also keeps the warmth in during the winter and the heat out during the summer."We're actually sequestering carbon in the walls," she says of the process. "We're helping to reverse climate change with these buildings. And as people start to put those two things together, we're getting a lot of business."Tasker says straw homes have been around for more than 100 years and came to California in 1996. Now, she estimates more than 60 are in use in San Diego County.She says the size of the bales can be a drawback, as it takes up valuable square footage on smaller lots. She also doesn't recommend building any higher than two stories.As for bugs or rodents, Tasker says they can't get into the walls because of how densely packed the bales are.Even the interior walls, which are typically made from traditional wood and studs, are packed with the straw/clay mixture.The construction price is comparable to conventional homes with similar insulation and efficiency ratings. Tasker thinks the idea will catch on as more people become more aware of the way these homes can help the planet.As for the little pigs jokes, she wrote a book called "The Story of the Fourth Little Pig." United Airlines said it's suspending a program that transports pets in cargo holds.It will stop accepting new reservations for its PetSafe program, though it will honor any reservations made through March 20, the airline said.Passengers can still carry small pets with them in carry-on luggage.The suspension comes as United reviews its pet transport policies, a process that should be completed by May 1, United said.United has experienced some major pet-traveling disasters recently. Last week, a small dog died after it was put in the overhead bin on a United flight. UPDATE 8:54 p.m. - Nov. 9, 2019SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Police Department has called off Saturday's Amber Alert after determining that the man who reported his vehicle stolen with a child inside filed a false report.The man told officers that his acquaintance, 29-year-old Osman Rahimi, drove off in his vehicle with an 11-year-old inside, according to SDPD Lt. Shawn Takeuchi.The man described the boy, named Johnny Diaz, as a Hispanic child, 4 feet tall, wearing a white shirt and “Transformers” pajama pants."Detectives contacted the California Highway Patrol to put out an Amber Alert in an effort to find the boy," said Takeuchi.Oceanside Police Department officers located the vehicle and Rahimi near the Aliso Creek Rest Area but the child was not with Rahimi."SDPD officers took custody of Rahimi and transported him to SDPD headquarters along with the man who made the report, and the Amber Alert was cancelled," said Takeuchi.Takeuchi said they conducted numerous interviews and determined that no child was involved. Detectives are still working to determine if Rahimi is responsible for stealing the car.The man who made the report, who has not yet been identified, may also face charged of filing a false report, according to Takeuchi."While it appears the original report was false, the mission of our department is to protect all life," said Takeuchi.
