SAN DIEGO (CNS) - More than a dozen animal shelters, rescues and sanctuaries across San Diego County Saturday will encourage people to adopt a pet during the fifth annual Clear the Shelters day.Clear the Shelters is a nationwide animal adoption event intended to help as many shelter animals as possible find a forever home. Since the event began in 2015, more than 300,000 pets have been adopted during Clear the Shelters events.The San Diego Humane Society's San Diego, Escondido and Oceanside campuses and the county of San Diego's Department of Animal Services shelters in Bonita and Carlsbad will participate in the event and waive adoption fees for all animals adopted throughout the day.At the county's shelters and the humane society, animals available for adoption have been spayed or neutered, microchipped and brought up to date on their vaccinations, if necessary. Prospective adopters can save time by searching the available pets at a shelter's website."People still need to go through the normal adoption process of filling out an application and doing a screening interview with staff. We just want to make sure their new owners are prepared and committed to an animal," County Animal Services Director Daniel DeSousa said.According to the county, 81 animals were adopted during last year's Clear the Shelters event, while more than 400 animals were adopted at the humane society's three locations last year. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspected hit-and-run driver who allegedly struck and gravely injured a bicyclist last month in the Midtown area was arrested in a shopping center parking lot in Kern County, it was reported Wednesday.San Diego police identified the suspected driver last week as Mauricio Flores and also released the name of a woman, Jessica Bailey, suspected of riding in the van with Flores.The pair were in a 2005 Dodge Caravan with Georgia license places that struck a bicyclist around 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 21 on West Washington Street at India Street in the Midtown area, police said.RELATED: Bicyclist sustains life-threatening injury in hit-and-runThe victim suffered a life-threatening head injury and remains in the hospital, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.In video shot by a witness and released by San Diego police, the driver could be seen stopping after the collision and getting out of the van.The video then showed the driver and passenger going to the injured man on the side of the road before the driver tugs the bent bicycle out from under the front of the van and sets it aside. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities reached out to the public Thursday for help in identifying a motorist involved in a hit-and-run that killed a pedestrian last week in a Chollas Creek-area neighborhood.The 48-year-old victim was standing next to a parked vehicle along the west curb line of the 5300 block of Chollas Parkway shortly before 1 a.m. Friday when a dark-colored car traveling to the south at high speed on the wrong side of the street hit him, according to San Diego police.Following the fatal impact, the motorist stopped momentarily, then drove off, Officer Robert Heims said.The victim, whose name has been withheld pending family notification, died at the scene.Surveillance cameras captured images of the vehicle -- a four-door sedan, possibly a Lexus or Toyota with a lowered suspension. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman robbed a San Diego vape and smoke shop at gunpoint and was later arrested, authorities said Saturday.It happened just before 10 p.m. Friday at the shop at 3094 National Avenue, according to San Diego police Officer Robert Heims.The woman walked in, pointed a gun at an employee and demanded money, Heims said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An Arizona man who carried out a series of knifepoint rapes in the city of San Diego 24 years ago, as well as two rapes in Riverside County in 2002 and 2004, was sentenced Thursday to 50 years to life in prison.Christopher Vanbuskirk, 47, of Goodyear, pleaded guilty last year to six rape counts for attacking the women on four occasions between August and November of 1995 in San Diego, as well as two women in the Coachella Valley area of Riverside County in March 2002 and November 2004.Prosecutors said the four San Diego cases occurred twice in the Tierrasanta neighborhood, once in Pacific Beach and once near San Diego Mesa College.
