With 20 electoral votes at stake, all eyes will be on Pennsylvania on Election Day. However, officials warn that counting the ballots could take days.In Bucks County, a heavily populated suburban county near Philadelphia has a population of about 628,000 people. In 2016, Hillary Clinton won the county by a narrow lead with a few thousand votes. This time around, both presidential campaigns have been courting the suburban vote, and the suburban Philadelphia counties are considered critical. Polls across the state closed at 8 p.m. EST, and now the more than 2 million mail-in ballots the state has received can now be counted. “We sent out about 200,000 ballots, which is 10 times more than we did four years ago, and we've gotten back somewhere in the area 160,000,” said Bob Harvie, Bucks County, Pennsylvania Board of Elections Chairman. “We still have mail coming in obviously today that we can accept. We had U.P.S. dropping off some ballots. We've got drop boxes that will be emptied at 8, and those will be brought here, and we don't know how much will be in those.” In Pennsylvania, more than 2 million mail-in ballots have been returned so far. The state doesn’t have a lot of experience dealing with large amounts of mail-in ballots, unlike places like Colorado, Washing, and even Florida and Arizona, where ballots have been counted as they come in. However, in Bucks County, officials didn’t begin counting ballots until after the polls closed, and a handful of Pennsylvania counties won’t start counting until tomorrow. “It's been a big challenge. It has been, you know, primarily because we were not even able toopen the envelopes until today. And there's a security envelope. So, that's two envelopes you need to open. You need to be able to make sure that everything is on there, their name, their address, the date,” said Diane Marseglia, Bucks County Board of Elections. “So, you're checking for a lot of things all at the same time and then you're pulling it out, and then, you're going to start to gather them for a vote. When experts look at the economy and its rebound, they go through an alphabet soup of letters, with a “V” shape recovery being the best-case scenario. It’s a fast decline with a fast recovery. Letters like “W” or “L” mean a much slower and painful path forward.A resurgence of more COVID-19 cases is shifting the likely shape of our economic recovery, and having economists evaluate the likelihood of a recovery in the shape of the more dreaded letters.“The fact that the virus has increased in a number of states shows that it is still very much a threat not only to one’s health but the economy,” said Michelle Meyer, who heads U.S. Economics at Bank of America. “The initial stage of the recovery was quite robust. It felt quite ‘V’ like, the economy was digging its way out of what was a very deep hole.”According to Bank of America, about a third of the jobs lost during the pandemic have been recovered. However, the recovery has slowed down into more of a “U” shape, and now data is showing a stall with concern of a higher chance of a “W” or “L” shape recovery.“The ‘W’ trajectory would be the worst-case scenario. That would show real fragility on the economy if we dipped back into a recession,” added Meyer.Experts say it would lead even higher unemployment, and more permanent job loss and business closures. In addition, to come out of a “W” or “L” shape recovery, we would need even more stimulus money from the federal government, which may not even improve the economic downturn as much as it did the first time.“Stimulus in Washington provides a really nice band-aid and I think it helped tremendously in the first stage of this recovery but at the end of the day, we need the economy to fundamentally improve,” said Meyer.The good news is unless there is a significant or full shutdown again, a “W” shape recovery is still less likely to occur than a “U” shape.“Our analysis projects that a 'U' shape recovery with rather steep losses and growth this year and rather flat next year and then recovering subsequently is the most likely outcome,” said David Turkington, the Senior Vice President at State Street Associates.A recent State Street study based on 100 years of historical data shows that the U.S. still has 30.1% chance of a “U” recovery, and a combined 24.4% chance of a “W” or “L” shape recovery which include stagflation and depression outcomes.“The real economy I think is what determines the recovery and how that plays forward,” said Turkington.The real economy is jobs, businesses and consumer spending. When it comes to free food, demand is up and donations are down.To help feed the hungry, volunteers have turned a school parking lot into a pantry.“That’s what's important,” said Maria Estrada with the Wyatt Academy, a charter school in Denver, Colorado.Once a week, her teams passes out free bags of food to families and to people like Marco Esparza.“I’m getting some apples and potatoes,” he said.For Esparza, these donations more than just feed his family.“With this kind of pandemic, it helps us to stay safe at home."Since COVID-19 hit, Estrada says more people are requesting food donations across the country while volunteers adjust to the new norm and practice new safety guidelines.“Things are different,” Estrada said about food donation centers. “We now have to make sure everybody is wearing gloves. We want to make sure everybody is being safe. Everybody has their masks on. We’re trying to keep everybody social distanced.”Estrada says the COVID-19 crisis is creating somewhat of a national food shortage crisis. That’s why they’re now partnering with the YMCA.“When COVID hit, YMCAs across the country started to support food programming,” said Katie Canfield with the YMCA.Nationwide, the YMCA has provided 37 million meals to more than one million people in the last six months. That’s an increase of more than 25% since the same time last year as they now deal with new safety regulations.“We are making sure that our community is using hand sanitizer,” Canfield said. “We are currently handling the food and then we hand them the bag when its complete.”Moving forward, the YMCA hopes to go mobile and bring food straight to people’s houses.But for now, they’ll focus on helping feed people in person. 1727
