It was January of 1980 when 21-year-old Helene Pruszynski was kidnapped, raped and murdered in Douglas County, Colorado. Her body was found in a field, but police never identified a suspect. Pruszynski’s murder became a cold case.“We consider a case that does not have any viable leads after one to two years a cold case,” cold case detective Shannon Jensen said.However, Jensen says the case was never forgotten. Detectives continued to re-open it for 40 years. Then, with the help of new DNA technology, the suspect was identified in December of last year as James Curtis Clanton. He will be sentenced on April 10, based on the first-degree murder laws in 1980. Pruszynski’s sister – the only immediate family still living – finally received the closure she had waited decades for.“She had told us that she thought that this may never be solved, and she had somewhat given up on her hope. And she couldn’t believe that after all these years we were able to identify and arrest a suspect in her sister’s murder,” Detective Jensen said.One key element to solving the case was DNA from people related to Clanton.Detective Jensen actively searched a public database called GEDmatch, which is used as a way for people to learn more about their family history. She came across Rob Diehl, who turned out to be Clanton's fourth cousin. When Detective Jensen reached out, he says he went through a wide range of emotions.However, Diehl says it didn’t take long for him to realize he wanted to help, especially when he discovered how serious the crime was. He says because Clanton was such a distant cousin, they never knew each other.“You just think… it’s been cold for decades and so long that if there’s no evidence now, this isn’t going to be solved for the family or to bring somebody to justice,” Diehl said.So Diehl gave Detective Jensen access to his family tree and his DNA. Those both are critical elements in a newly utilized DNA technology called genetic genealogy.“Traditional genealogy is using public records to document a person’s family tree and their ancestors. Genetic genealogy is when you’re using DNA to help with that process,” Chief Genetic Genealogist CeCe Moore said.CeCe Moore is the Chief Genetic Genealogist at Parabon Nanolabs. Parabon assisted with Ms. Pruszynski’s case, and the tech company has helped law enforcement across the nation identify more than 100 criminals the past two years."For us, significant amounts of DNA could be less than one percent, which is really a breakthrough because previously with law enforcement cases, you needed to have an exact match, or a very close family member,” Moore said. In Pruszynski’s case, law enforcement in 1980 collected plenty of DNA evidence, and stored it properly making it possible for detectives today to upload a DNA profile to find her killer. In fact, Detective Jensen says she’s currently in the process of solving two more cold cases. “This technology has given detectives like myself another tool to add to our toolbox. It’s given new life to cases that we once thought might have been unsolvable,” Detective Jensen said.Not only is this technology finding those responsible for crimes, but it’s also ruling out the innocent.“If genetic genealogy is used earlier in the process, it can really help avoid hundreds or even thousands of innocent people who are looked at as persons of interest in these cases,” Moore said.Moore says 30 million people have uploaded their DNA to genetic websites the past decade. However, in order for law enforcement to gain access to it, you would need to upload your DNA to a public database like GEDmatch, and ‘opt in’ for law enforcement to see your profile.“If you have done a DNA kit, or you’re thinking about doing a DNA kit on ancestry or 23andMe or My Heritage, download that raw DNA data file and upload it to GEDMatch because everyone can be a crime solver,” Detective Jensen said. 3926
KANSAS CITY — Maureen Boesen has always known cancer risk was high in her family."We're able to really track our history of breast cancer back to the late 1800s and early 1900s," Boesen said. "My grandmother actually passed away from ovarian cancer when she was 44. She had five sisters and none of them lived to the age of 50. Then, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 32. We knew there was something going on and that it was a very young age."When Boesen and her two sisters were ages 3, 5 and 7, their mom was already receiving chemotherapy for stage 2 breast cancer. Because of the extensive family history, the girls were part of a study at a university in another part of the Midwest. Their mom was hoping to help the world better understand what was killing so many women. She was hoping to better her daughters' chances for survival."We were all tested in the same exact room," said Boesen's sister, Bridget Stillwell. "I can even remember what the room looked like." Because the girls were so young, and the health threat still likely years away, they wouldn't receive their DNA test results until they turned 18."We knew we were part of a study," Boesen said. "We knew our results were waiting for us, but we didn't know what they were."When asked if she found that wait frustrating, she said emphatically it was not."Quite the opposite. We felt empowered," she said.She didn't get the results right away. The sisters knew there was nothing they could likely do at age 18 even if their test results showed they'd inherited the BRCA gene mutation. The sisters all waited until they were around age 21. One sister was positive. One sister was negative. Boesen remembers meeting with the researcher to learn her results."We sat down and we had a conversation about what BRCA was and what it meant for my family," Boesen said. "It was a lengthy conversation, which made me very uncomfortable because why would a conversation that wasn't going to change my life last that long?"Eventually, the researcher told her she had inherited the gene mutation."It was just devastating because I knew what breast cancer and ovarian cancer can do to a family. You know, my first question out of my mouth was, 'Is there any chance this could be wrong?' The researcher said 'No.' "Boesen walked out of that meeting determined. She was going to make decisions to save her own life. She was going to have a bilateral prophylactic mastectomy. She would schedule a surgery to remove both breasts to prevent breast cancer."This was me doing what I was supposed to do and this was me being empowered and me being proactive and not waiting until I have a cancer diagnosis," Boesen said.She didn't want to feel like a ticking time bomb. She wanted to live.Boesen had the surgery to remove both breasts when she was just 23 years old. She went on to get married and have three children."I didn't get to breastfeed them. It was sad. I'm not brokenhearted or devastated about it, but it is sad to think I couldn't provide for my children like that," she said.At the time, she still believed she'd made the right decision because she was healthy.Once done having children, she knew there was another step that most people with the dangerous BRCA gene mutation have to consider."I knew that when I was done having children, I needed to have a complete hysterectomy," Boesen said.The BRCA gene mutation not only dramatically increases a woman's chance of developing breast cancer at a young age, it also significantly increases a woman's chance of ovarian cancer."The right thing to do and what the doctors say to do is have a complete hysterectomy by the age of 35 and I was in my early 30s," Boesen said.In 2018, she went to a hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, to start the process of preparing for her hysterectomy. Both her health care provider and her insurance company wanted a new DNA test. Everyone knew what the results would be, but they went through the motions to get the required confirmation she was positive for the deadly gene mutation which was so rampant in her family.The test results were supposed to be back in a few weeks, but it had been four and Boesen was starting to worry. Then, she got the call from the doctor."I was at work. And the first thing she said was, 'We need to talk', and my heart just sank," Boesen said. "She said, 'You're negative,' and I just started bawling."She was overwhelmed, confused and full of emotions."I was angry. I was regretful. I was happy. I was sad. I so desperately wanted to feel relief, 'Oh, thank God, this is the best day of my life,' but it wasn't," Boesen said. "It was just devastating."Boesen got another test to confirm the second test results. It also came back negative.She did not get the hysterectomy. There was no need now. There was no longer a threat that cancer was waiting to explode in her body. She now knew she had not inherited the BRCA gene mutation that had killed so many of her relatives.Dr. Jennifer Klemp of the University of Kansas Cancer Center has worked in the field of cancer genetics, specifically breast and female cancers, since 1997. She is the director of Cancer Survivorship and a cancer risk counselor. While she was not involved in Boesen's original research, she says she's not surprised."Twenty years ago, when we sent our first tests and BRCA 1 and 2 were the two genes we tested for, about 30-40 percent of the time we would get something called a 'variant of uncertain significance,' " Klemp said. "Basically, that meant we found a mutation or an error in the DNA, but we didn't know if that was associated with an increased risk of cancer. Today, using a reputable lab, that should be less than 1-2 percent."Klemp says things are changing rapidly in the field of genetic testing. If someone had a DNA test more than five years ago, they should consider having an updated test. She also says the at-home tests are good for finding out details about your ancestry, but they shouldn't be used to make major decisions about your health. For that, you'd want a health professional to order a commercial test through a certified, reputable lab. With more and more companies offering testing, and more medical professionals and patients interested in genetic testing for so many reasons, she says demand right now is outpacing supply."If you have 10 different labs doing testing, and you have every primary care, OB-GYN, oncology clinic, surgical clinic and any number of patients eligible for testing, it's a little bit of the wild west," Klemp said, adding there's no central repository for this patient and test information.As for Boesen, the university where the original research was done and the false positive originated offered to re-test her DNA. She is currently waiting on the results from what is now her fourth genetic test. She hopes it comes back negative, too, which is what the experts all expect. She believes, then, finally, she'll be able to move forward with her life. Boesen and her two sisters are writing a book about their experiences. Each of her sisters has a story to tell, too. Jackie Wilkinson recently picked up an unknown call at her home.Her cable company was showing on her caller ID, so Wilkinson did what she normally doesn't do with unexpected calls: she answered. "It appeared that Spectrum was calling, our provider for internet, phone and cable services, so I answered, " Wilkinson said.Other customers report receiving similar calls that show up as Cox, Comcast, Xfinity, Charter, Optimum, and others.The caller immediately offered to help lower her bill, so Wilkinson perked up."He asked, 'Do you want to save money?" Wilkinson said. "Naturally, in this day and age, who doesn't want to save money? So I said yes, and he said, 'Great, now tell me how much you are paying.'"But that last comment from the phone rep raised a red flag."These are questions I would think Spectrum would already know," she said. "They can see your billing price right there!"Who was really calling?When the caller then told her she could save money by signing up for a satellite TV service instead, Wilkinson realized it wasn't really Spectrum Cable on the line.Instead, it was a case of "spoofing," where a fake number shows on your caller ID.Scammers have been spoofing the numbers of the FBI and IRS for several years now and getting people to answer the phone that way. It was only natural they'd start pretending to be your cable company.We contacted Spectrum, and the company said it has other complaints about these calls.It recently sent out a warning to customers saying: "If an offer doesn't sound right, customers may ask the representative on the phone to validate they are an employee by looking up their account number. Spectrum representatives will always have an account number." Then call your company (at their customer service number on your bill) and ask if there is any such person working there.Wilkinson just wants to warn others."If you see your cable company calling, you think its important," Wilkinson said. "The phone number appears on your phone as if they are the cable company, so everything seemed legitimate up until the questions." But cable providers never call you to chat about lowering your bill or offering a discount. INDIANAPOLIS — The shiny red and white truck was supposed to be shipped to Anderson, Indiana, last month.Shawn Abernathy and his fiance Tiffany found the truck listed on Facebook Marketplace by a page called AMS Car Sales."It was a 1997 Ford F250 it looked brand new. I mean they sent us a video of it it ran beautiful," Abernathy said.After several emails with the owner, who claimed to be a widow, they paid ,200."They asked us to get six eBay cards at 0 a piece to do the down payment. The agreement was we would get the down payment paid and the vehicle would be delivered," Abernathy said.Abernathy was then asked to pay even more money."When we declined they said hold on we will put you over to the financial department and the phone went dead," Abernathy said. "I was pretty upset. I buckled. It tore me up. It destroyed our Christmas. We're still trying to recover from it. Twelve-hundred dollars is a pretty good loss."The manager of AMS Cars on the west side of Indianapolis at 10th Street and Raceway Road said his business has received thousands of phone calls from customers asking about vehicles they found on fake Facebook posts. Their message is if the car is not on their official website, it is not available."A lot of angry customers," AMS Cars manager Sam Sodhi said. "A majority of our time, about 5-7 people that work here go in every day to explain to people whether they are on on the phone email, text message, walk in, 'Hey, kindly report it. Please help us.'"Sodhi said AMS Cars received more than 8,000 phone calls in December about cars they don't have in stock. They posted a scam warning online and recorded a message that plays when customers call their office.Sodhi said he wants customers to do their research, Google the cars VIN number, know the difference between the two Facebook pages and always check their website to verify the vehicle.Scripps station WRTV in Indianapolis is waiting on a response from Facebook to see if anything can be done about the AMS Car Sales page.
