SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police searched Friday for a very tall man who robbed a Hillcrest bank with a semi-automatic handgun. The man walked into the California Bank and Trust at 3737 Fifth Avenue about 9:15 a.m., police said. Officers said the man demanded money from a teller who gave him cash, then he ran from the bank. A witness said the man dropped some of the money as he fled the area. No injuries were reported. Police said the man is black, 6’5” tall, and 220 pounds. He was last seen wearing a fisherman's hat, dark sunglasses, a dark colored hoodie, and khaki pants. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego-based Qualcomm is bringing tech companies together this week to showcase innovations in technology at its Smart Cities event. Zee Munir is in San Diego to display a giant touchscreen system. It puts everything teachers need for lessons at their fingertips. Teachers can record lessons and even have an extra set of eyes. “The cameras would show whether the student is paying attention or not dozing off or not,” Munir said. The first-of-its-kind event is designed to make it easier for governments to identify and use the smart innovations, which include parking meters, license plates, and even vacuums. Snajeet Pandit of Qualcomm said San Diego is where much of the smart tech begins. “San Diego compared to other cities adopted tech much faster rather than waiting and watching so they are at the cutting edge of deploying tech,” Pandit said. 882

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- SeaWorld San Diego is being allowed to reopen, but certain parts of the park will have to remain closed, a San Diego County spokesman said.A county spokesman told ABC 10News that the park is being allowed to reopen under California’s guidance for zoos.SeaWorld San Diego will be able to open its outdoor areas of the park, but indoor areas -- such as its aquariums -- and rides will not be open to guests under the specific zoo guidance.Under the zoo guidance, the park will have to post a Safe Reopening Plan like other businesses.It remains unknown when the park will officially reopen; SeaWorld San Diego officials did not immediately respond to ABC 10News’ request for comment.The park has been closed since March due to the coronavirus pandemic. The park's website states that for season passholders, tickets will be extended as long as the closure lasted.The company’s most recent earnings report revealed troubling numbers from the second quarter and first six months of 2020, including revenue down 96 percent compared to the same time last year.Parents around San Diego said the news is a welcome sign after a summer of closures. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State University's Interfraternity Council voted this week to ban social gatherings on campus this fall.The Thursday night vote bans all IFC social events and requires that all IFC recruitment events be held virtually to curb the spread of COVID-19. IFC's social moratorium also prevents fraternities from hosting any formal or informal events at chapter facilities or in satellite houses."The fact of the matter is that COVID-19 is currently a very real concern in our SDSU community," Lee Abed, IFC president, said. “Because of this, we would like to ensure that our community sees COVID-19 have as little of an impact as possible. Therefore, out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to halt all social events effective immediately.”The ban only applies to IFC members and does not affect College Panhellenic Association, the National Pan-Hellenic Council, or the United Sorority and Fraternity Council.
