BOSTON (AP) — Colleges and universities are pushing back against the Trump administration’s decision to make international students leave the country if they plan on taking classes entirely online this fall. Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology filed a lawsuit seeking to block the rule Wednesday, and other universities are promising to work with students to keep them in the country. The Trump administration says the directive will allow for proper social distancing on campuses. BEIJING (AP) — While China appears to have reduced coronavirus cases to near zero, other infectious threats remain, with local health authorities announcing a suspected bubonic plague case in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.Authorities in the Bayannur district raised the plague warning on Sunday, ordered residents not to hunt wild animals such as marmots and to send for treatment anyone with fever or showing other possible signs of infection.The case was reported at a people’s hospital in Urad Middle Banner, according to state-run Xinhua news agency.Xinhua reports that the third-level plague warning for prevention and control will last until the end of the year.Plague can be fatal in up to 90% of people infected if not treated, primarily with several types of antibiotics.Pneumonic plague can develop from bubonic plague and results in a severe lung infection causing shortness of breath, headache and coughing.Health authorities in China have announced a suspected case of bubonic plague in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. 1052

Black Friday has already been changing over the last few years with online shopping getting more popular and people getting tired of fighting the crowds, but stores are now further reinventing the shopping holiday because of the pandemic.Home Depot came out this week saying for the first time that it's offering Black Friday deals starting in early November that will last through December, in-store and online.Best Buy, Target and Amazon are some of the other companies saying they'll be offering holiday deals earlier than before. Target is saying you can get deals starting in October and Amazon will reportedly start offering deals then too.“This is where consumers have to be smart and consumers have to themselves do the research and go, ‘is this really a deal or is this what they were running last week and this week they're saying it's a Black Friday sale?’” said Jane Boyd Thomas, a marketing professor at Winthrop University.Boyd Thomas has been researching Black Friday for years. She says a very small percentage of people will still want to go shopping on the day after Thanksgiving, because it's a ritual.She expects we'll see some supply chain issues for the holidays like we saw early in the pandemic.“So, I would say to consumers, if there's something your child wants or you want, and it's on sale, that you probably should get it then, because the guarantees about waiting for later for a better deal may or may not come and the supply may not be there,” said Boyd Thomas.She expects we could see most of the issues with electronics and anything being imported. 1590

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- A Brooklyn karaoke bar with over 280 people inside was shut down over COVID-19 violations early Sunday, according to the New York City Sheriff's Office.Authorities shut down Legend KTV karaoke bar in Borough Park around 2 a.m.About 281 people were inside the location, which exceeded Department of Building occupancy and had a vacate order from 2018, the NYC sheriff said.The location’s liquor license was also revoked in 2019.The venue had windowless, private party rooms with 25 to 30 people inside, according to a law enforcement source.Inside one of the rooms was a young child who was running back and forth between tables, according to the source.While 281 people were inside, authorities believe there were likely more people as about 40 dispersed when the sheriff’s office arrived, the source said.At least six people were arrested for offenses, including child endangerment, authorities said.This story was originally published by Cristian Benavides and Kristine Garcia at WPIX. 1013
