SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - People with gardens and groves in their back yard are helping others through the coronavirus pandemic, by donating their extra fruits and veggies."Especially in these times where we're just looking for good stories and good things to do, that was in my heart to encourage other people," says Terri Healy. She donated six full boxes worth of fruit from her backyard trees.Healy was inspired by a message from her Pastor at the Rock Church. So she took the fruit to a nearby nursery, and posted a sign that said "Free Organic Fruit." It was gone within a couple of days."The employees there said that the customers were just so excited to receive it," says Healy. "We're thrilled that it was used in the community."Community is a big deal to KK Kvernland. She helps run the Second Chance Youth Garden. It gives at-risk teens hands-on training in a garden, as well as mentoring. Kvernland had to cancel the classes during the pandemic and was looking for something to do with all the vegetables they grew."We usually run a delivery box service, sell at fruit stands, to restaurants, and the kids all take home food each week," she explains. "Now, we're putting our heads together, and we really want to get food to the most vulnerable people in our community, including our participants and their families." They're also asking for help, as they're missing out on the revenue they get from sales. "We're asking people to come and donate to our website so that we're able to cover the costs to provide people food to the people that needed the most," says Kvernland. For both Healy and Kvernland, and countless other people who have been giving away the fruits and veggies they grow at home, this is all about coming together during a crisis."It's just a good reminder that it's important to have community resilience," says Kvernland. "And it's important to make sure that services are accessible for all types of people.""We're trying to encourage others," says Healy. "What can you do with your farm or your ranch? Is there anything on your farms that you can use to help spread the food supply to people in your community? It's a good feeling."For more information about the Second Chance Youth Garden, or to make a donation, click here. 2263

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Organizations announced beefed-up fire crews across Southern California Thursday morning, anticipating the Red Flag Warning issued by the National Weather Service.Years prior illustrate how devastating a spark during a serious wind event can be."There's places all over the county that haven't burned in quite a while," Cal Fire Captain Issac Sanchez said.RELATED: Gusty Santa Ana winds, dry conditions prompt Red Flag Warning for San Diego CountyMeteorologist Megan Parry said this is the second driest year on record. That means there's much more dry brush. The National Weather Service said fuel moisture is near record low levels.A bad recipe for fire danger with, "the east winds coming out of the desert area... The low humidity that's coming along with it, and the warmer than average temperatures," Sanchez said.Sanchez asked everyone to do their part, "to get your defensible clearance in and be careful when you're out and about in order to avoid accidentally starting a fire," so they can protect your home.LATEST WEATHER FORECASTHe advised against using powered tools like chainsaws and lawnmowers, saying if they hit a rock, they could spark. Instead, he suggests using hand tools to clear away dry, dead brush. If you're driving or towing anything, make sure nothing is dragging from your car, or rig, that could cause sparks to fly. Also, he said there are lots of tools out there to help you get prepared. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More than a dozen exotic dancers who claimed their constitutional rights were violated during raids at two local strip clubs have been awarded nearly .5 million by the City of San Diego. The 17 dancers from Exposé and Cheetah's Gentleman's Club have sought damages from what they claimed where humiliating searches and for being held against their will by San Diego Police officers during searches on July 23, 2013, and March 3, 2014.City Council leaders Tuesday approved two settlements for two lawsuits over the raids. One settlement awarded 0,000 to one dancer while the second settlement awarded .4 million to 16 dancers, attorney Dan Gilleon, who represents the 16 dancers, confirmed.RELATED: Victory for San Diego exotic dancers?in legal battle over police inspectionCheetah's dancers claim officers swarmed the building in 2014 with bulletproof vests and guns and ordered dancers to the dressing rooms. There, they reportedly checked that all 30 dancers had proper city permits and were in compliance to work at the strip club.Dancers also say officers forced them to line up, expose body parts, and have their tattoos photographed. Surveillance video showed officers lining up dancers to be photographed and taking their information."I felt like it was really, really, like, uncomfortable," dancer Brittany Murphy told 10News in 2014. "I don't understand why I have to get my picture taken. I asked them if it was of my face and they said yes. So, I got up against the locker and [the officer] is standing really far. She's taking a photo of my entire body."RELATED: Questions raised after officers swarm Kearny Mesa strip clubMurphy argued her permit card already had her photo and officers would not let dancers leave and instead, questioned them about personal information.San Diego Police has said the raid was part of "police-regulated business" and random inspections, and that any photographs taken were for investigative purposes."One of the many responsibilities of the San Diego Police Department’s Vice Unit is to conduct random inspections of strip clubs to ensure dancers are complying with the law and that they have an entertainers permit," SDPD Lt. Kevin Mayer told 10News in a 2014 statement. "In most cases, Vice Unit detectives do not require or request clubs to shut down. Photographs of the entertainers permit and the person in possession of it are taken for investigative purposes."RELATED: Exotic dancers?file claim against City of San Diego after Kearny Mesa strip club raidThe raids set off a national debate regarding constitutional rights.Earlier this year, a federal judge ruled the dancers' First Amendment rights were violated by the city's municipal code allowing inspections of police-regulated businesses. The judge, however, stopped short of ruling on their claim the city violated their Fourth Amendment rights on unreasonable searches and seizures. 2995

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Nestled off of Camino Del Rio West in the Midway District, the Body Shop sits between a Navis Pack and Ship site and the "Les Girls" adult entertainment club on Riley Street. The Body Shop, a strip club at 3776 Riley Street, welcomed customers for five decades before it closed last December. This week, Rock Church announced they'll be moving in. Rock Church has five campuses across San Diego County. They have a school and now, they have plans for the property in the Midway District. They told 10News the purchase is about more than repurposing a strip club - it's about transforming the neighborhood. "We thought it was a great idea because we know the pain that goes on in that building," said Miles McPherson, pastor at Rock Church. "Not just the women, but the men who go there and their families.”The church’s main campus on Rosecrans is roughly a mile and a half away from the new property. "We don’t know what we're going to do with the building, we just know what it won’t be used for," McPherson said. For decades, parents have explained to their kids why there's a huge sign that says 'nude girls' in their neighborhood, he said. Soon, it won't be necessary."It would be nice to put 'Rock Church' on top of that billboard, but that's another step," he said. "We’ll get to that. But you know the people in that community have been looking at that building for 50 years, and hopefully we can put something more positive in that building.”In addition to taking over the building, McPherson said the church plans to do outreach in the community. He had this message for former employees, “I want to tell you that we love you. And you are welcome at our church.” 1734
