SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As people continue to wipe out store shelves and stock up on essential items, a new app called Markk is helping users locate where products like water, eggs, and toilet paper are actually in stock."I think the main thing that makes us happy, is it's helping people out there," said co-founder, Shachin Bharadwaj. What started off as a visual, real-time review app in late August, quickly pivoted to an emergency supply finder amid the coronavirus pandemic.RELATED: San Diego grocery stores hiring to address demand amid virus"You can take photos and videos of the store with items you want to focus on," said Bharadwaj.Markk gives users the ability to take pictures or videos of the in stock essential items, in real-time, then tag their location and post."It's like an Instagram story basically," said Bharadwaj.RELATED: Will you qualify for a ,200 COVID-19 stimulus check?Your location must be enabled while using the app, but it only shows up to other users when posting from a store. The pictures or videos get marked on a map and may stay there for up to 24 hours."If you see new users coming into the same place and giving a better marking, the older marking automatically expires," explained Bharadwaj.RELATED: Grocery stores with hours for seniors amid coronavirus pandemicYou can also let users know what's out of stock, saving your neighbors a trip and reducing crowding in grocery stores."If you can help people in the community report essentials, when you are out buying stuff for yourself, then I think you are helping the greater cause," he said. This is only the third week the emergency supply finder has been in use, it is available worldwide but have mostly been used in Los Angeles.RELATED: 3.3 million seek US jobless aid, nearly 5 times earlier highBharadwak is hoping to get the word out so neighbors can begin helping each other during this unusual time."It will really help the community kind of be stronger and bring something for each other," he said.Markk is available in the Apple App Store as well as the Google Play Store. 2078

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - City leaders say the canyon near the 163 that caught fire Tuesday afternoon was overdue for tree trimming and a homeless flushing. The fire only burned 10 trees but it has many neighbors frustrated that the fire even started in the first place.“That was a pretty big one,” said Councilman Chris Ward on the fire, “we’re pretty scared here in the mid city neighborhoods with the urban canyons which catch fire from time to time.”Ward says he has been trying for over a year to get CalTrans and the City of San Diego to clear out the canyons.Officials have not announced the cause of the fire but it is believe to have been from a cooking fire started by homeless illegally camping.RELATED: Brush fire breaks out near 163“About a generation ago we lost 75 homes in Normal Heights to a canyon fire so this is a real, real danger.” said Ward, “We gotta take this seriously.” 896

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — By Saturday, many businesses will be shutting their doors all over again as San Diego County deals with a new round of restrictions in the purple tier."The overwhelming majority of folks who are doing it right are forced to be punished because of the individuals who choose not to," said Nathan Fletcher, San Diego County Supervisor. "Where we are now in a situation where we're faced with all bad options."The county's public health officer, Dr. Wilma Wooten, recently requested the state reconsider San Diego County's tier placement and keep the county in the red tier. She argued that data from October revealed the county's increased COVID-19 cases are not because of the sectors that would be impacted the most by moving into the purple tier. The request was not approved."We're going to continue to work to do everything we can with the state to have an approach that's right," said Fletcher. He said it's essential that every jurisdiction across the county does what it can to reduce the spread of COVID-19."We have to come together," he said. "There are limits of what the county can do when it comes to enforcement; we really need the help of the law enforcement agencies."But some say this has gone too far. Many business owners are now choosing to defy the orders and stay open to ensure their business survives, and employees still have a job.El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells said he has taken many calls and emails about the struggles business owners face in his jurisdiction. Some say defying the orders and keeping their doors open means keeping food on their family's table. Wells said having police respond to COVID-19 related complaints won't be a top priority."A lot of us believe the government is overreaching in the situation and so, the county, if this is what the county wants to do, then they're going to have to do the enforcement," said Wells.Fletcher said the only way to get back to a sense of normalcy is to understand how serious this pandemic is and tackle the problem together."There is no functioning economy when you get out of control spread of a pandemic," said Fletcher. "So when you have the mayor of a city and jurisdiction say they're going to ignore and defy public health orders, that sends a signal to people that this is not serious and they don't need to worry about it ... That leads to an increase in cases, an increase in deaths, and more closures." 2416
