SEATTLE, Wash. – For most sports enthusiasts immersing themselves in the roar of a stadium is the best part of fan experience. This year, numerous NFL teams are tailoring their venues for a very distinct group of spectators – those who otherwise might not be able to join in. While the sights and sounds of attending a sporting event can make it an unforgettable experience, Traci Schneider knows it’s not for everyone. “For a lot of people that can be really, really overwhelming.” It’s why more and more teams are adding sensory rooms to their venues. We were given access to one at CenturyLink Field, home to the Seattle Seahawks. “This is a place to go and a place to be safe and kind of just a little break to get away from it all,” explained Schneider. “So, any fan can come in here.” Schneider’s 17-year-old son Ben has autism. “Sensory issues are a big challenge for him, and I know what that looks like as a mom,” said Schneider. “And you want to make the world a little bit easier for your kids to navigate.” She helped provide input for this space, because not only is she a mom of a child with autism, but she’s also married to the Seahawks’ general manager. Schneider says the room is meant to help people with autism, anxiety, PTSD and other sensory disorders. “We still have a TV so people can still watch what’s happening out on the field,” Schneider said. The Seahawk’s room features dimmable overhead lighting, hooded chairs, a calming bubble wall and a fiber-optic waterfall curtain. “They slowly change colors and they’re meant to be touched,” Schneider said. All of the items help to calm a person. In addition to the sensory room, the Seahawks are the first to offer autism kits that include noise cancelling headphones and information on when the loudest moments in the game are expected to happen, including pyrotechnics. Schneider says the ultimate goal is to provide a safe space for anyone who may need a temporary reprieve without making them feel like they’re missing out. “So just knowing that that is supporting our fans and making them feel welcome. It’s a question that lawmakers have been exploring as they seek answers from top bosses at three major voting manufacturers. Tom Burt, the President and CEO OF Election Systems & Software, appeared confident as he testified before the House Administration Committee last week. “We’ve seen no evidence that our voting systems have been tampered with in any way,” said Burt. The companies that make vote tabulation systems say they welcome federal oversight of election infrastructure and need help securing their supply chains, especially for voting machine parts made in foreign countries. “Several of those components, to our knowledge, there is no option for manufacturing those in the United States,” explained Dominion Voting Systems CEO John Poulos. Cyber and national security experts say antiquated and paperless voting machines pose the most significant risk to the U.S.’s election infrastructure. Matt Blaze, a Professor of Law & Computer Science at Georgetown University, testified before the committee that even the scanners that record paper ballot selections can be tampered with. “It’s simply beyond the state of the art to build software systems that can reliably withstand targeted attack by a determined adversary,” said Blaze. In the wake of Russian meddling in the 2016 election, congress is pumping nearly a billion dollars into making voting machines safer.“We're definitely in a much better position today than we were at the end of 2016,” said Liz Howard, an attorney with the nonprofit, nonpartisan Brenan Center for Justice in Washington. She also testified at last week’s hearing. “So, no machine is 100 percent secure. Election officials’ goal is to make the most resilient election system that they possibly can,” said Howard. Some are calling for regular election audits, more resources for state voting officials and the phasing out of all paperless voting machines. The Brennan Center estimates only about half of the states that used paperless voting machines in 2016 will continue to use them in 2020. Those eight states include Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Jersey, Tennessee and Texas. Roger Brannen is getting ready to take his medicine. It’s a little more involved than some people might be used to. He has to set up his own IV. But Brannen is used to things not being simple at this point. Just over two years ago he got some news that left him shell shocked. “I always describe it as a bomb going off when I got that diagnosis,” Brannen said. If anyone would know what that’s like, it’s Brannen. He was in the U.S. Marine Corps for 28 years and served tours in both Afghanistan and Iraq. So when he found out he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS, he thought it was a pretty good metaphor. “You’re processing a lot, like when a bomb goes off, you’re getting that concussion hitting you and you have go react because you don’t know where it came from a lot of the time so you’re trying to make sure the other ones around you are OK but then you also got to make sure that you’re OK,” Brannen said. But he says the diagnosis wasn’t the hardest part. It was telling his kids. “That was the biggest issue to me, trying to explain to my kids that daddy’s not gonna die in two to five years. My son asks me every day, 'you feel better today?' And I’m like, today’s better than yesterday, but I’m still getting up and living,” Brannen said. And that’s one of the reasons Brannen likes to spend time playing video games with his son. “This is what he loves to do, so I have to do something with him to get us closer,” Brannen said. Some time for just the two of them, so they can talk, relax and have fun.
