MANILA, June 7 (Xinhua) -- A reception was held in Manila Monday evening to mark the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the Philippines.Present at the reception, hosted by the Chinese embassy, were Philippine Foreign Secretary Alberto Romulo, former Philippine first lady Imelda Marcos, diplomats, Filipinos with Chinese origin and representatives of Chinese enterprises investing in the country.Addressing the reception, Chinese ambassador to the Philippines Liu Jianchao said that over the past 35 years, constructive and productive meetings on a regular basis between top leaders of the two countries have been indispensable in advancing bilateral ties with sustaining strength."I strongly believe," he said, "The essence of China- Philippines should be rooted in our peoples, in the studies we share, the business we do, the knowledge we gain, and even the sports we play.""Our purpose has always been making friends and partners with the Philippines and all the other countries in the region, fostering an amicable, stable and prosperous neighborhood, and building cooperation for mutual benefit and win-win progress," he added."As we are expecting the Philippine top leadership to be proclaimed, we know that China-Philippines relations are facing a new historical opportunity. This theme highlights three distinct features of bilateral relationship: the deep ties of friendship between the two peoples; the multifaceted and expanding bilateral relations; and the role of youth in this relationship."We are proud that many prominent Filipinos are of Chinese ancestry. Foremost among them, of course, is our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, our first woman President Corazon C. Aquino, and our first Filipino saint, Lorenzo Ruiz," he said.Aside from these prominent Filipinos, members of the Chinese- Filipino community have made and continue to make significant contributions to Philippine society, he added.China and the Philippines established diplomatic relations on June 9, 1975.

BEIJING, April 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao left here Monday morning for the upcoming Nuclear Security Summit on April 12-13 in Washington at the invitation of the U.S. President Barack Obama.Hu will deliver a speech stressing the importance of nuclear security and clarifying China's policy on the issue. Hu will meet with Obama on the sidelines of the summit.Up to now, leaders or representatives from 46 countries, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the European Union (EU), and other international organizations have confirmed their attendance."We hope common ground can be increased between all participants, and that they will pay greater attention to nuclear security, and work together to safeguard international peace and security," Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai said last week. Chinese President Hu Jintao delivers a keynote speech at a conference, which is held to conclude a nationwide campaign of studying and implementing the Scientific Outlook on Development, in Beijing, capital of China, April 6, 2010. XIANGNING, Shanxi, April 8 (Xinhua) -- The death toll at the flooded Wangjialing Coal Mine in north China's Shanxi Province had risen to 20 as of 8:20 p.m. Thursday while 18 miners are still unaccounted for, rescue authorities said.Three more bodies were recovered late Thursday after five were found earlier in the day.As of late Thursday, about 240,000 cubic meters of water had been pumped out, much more than the presumed 130,000 cubic meters, said Liu Dezheng, spokesman of the rescue operation, late Thursday.Seven of nine working sections had been ruled out for the existence of survivors and the targeted areas were narrowed to two sections, he said.Rescue operations were resumed after a short suspension because suspected leakage from an adjacent abandoned mine prompted flooding fears and an evacuation of the rescuers.Hundreds of rescuers evacuated when the shaft ceiling began to leak Thursday morning, said Liu Dezheng.The leakage had stopped by Thursday afternoon.Some survivors telephoned their family Thursday morning, and the family members would been organized to visit them, said Hong Yu, deputy manager of China National Coal Group Corp., who owns the flooded mine.All victims would be compensated, Hong added.A total of 261 miners were working below ground when the mine flooded on March 28. Some 108 miners escaped unharmed while 153 were trapped underground.On Monday, 115 miners were brought out of the mine alive after being trapped for more than a week.
