SAN DIEGO (KGTV)--If you've ever seen a traditional Danza Azteca performance, you know it's much more than a show."We always explain to people that these are ceremonial prayers and that we're sharing them not to entertain people although that's part of it because people love seeing it but also to teach the history of the dancing and to teach there's something to learn from everybody," said Mario Aguilar, the Capitan General or leader of Danza Mexi'cayotl.The group is celebrating it's 40th anniversary this year, which makes it the longest running of it's kind in the country.Aguilar says the dancing is just a part of what they offer members."We use the name circle because we consider ourselves, everybody in the circle as family members, we have some people who've been dancing 40 years," he explained.The colorful and elaborate dances are really stories, telling of the ancient indigenous heritage that members are keeping alive.Aguilar says they're also trying to spread a message of unity."We're reminding people that we're all one people we dress differently we talk differently but we all come and go from the same place and that to me is the greatest gift of Azteca Dance." 1194

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Developers in San Diego are offering a new concept for families looking for homes: Multi-Generational Housing.The homes include a separate suite within a single structure. The suite has a bedroom, living area, bathroom and a small kitchen.Developers say the idea designed with let elderly relatives, adult children who move back home or relatives with special needs in mind."You’re still with the family, but you have that privacy to step away and still be independent," says Bill Ostrem, the San Diego Division President for Lennar Homes. "At the same time, if you want to engage with the family, the family wants to engage with you it’s right there."Lennar says they started developing these kinds of homes in 2011 in Arizona. They saw a need as more extended families began living together.The suites help with that.Currently, Lennar is building their "NextGen" homes in the Sterling Heights community near 4-S Ranch. Ostrem says it's become their most popular model.About 1/3 of all the homes they've sold in Sterling Heights have the extra suite. They have other developments with NextGen homes in 13 states."I think it just makes sense," says Austin Dias, a Co-Partner with The Phair Company. They're about to start construction on La Mesa Summit Estates just north of the 94 freeway near Lemon Grove. The overwhelming response they got was from families looking for these kinds of homes."We see this a lot in other countries," Dias says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)---San Diego Fire Department recruiter Captain Jason Shanley reminds people all the time, "If you don’t see it it’s hard for you to know that you can be it."As the department's only full-time recruiter he spends his days making connections, trying to show not only kids but adults that being a firefighter is possible, no matter who they are or where they come from."The narrative is that tall white guys with mustaches are the ones that become firefighters and that’s just not true," saidShanley.Take Captain Shanley for instance. His path to the fire department was paved by members of an organization called Brothers United, a group of African American firefighters in San Diego."I started taking some classes, met some other firefighters, got a mentor and then here I am 20 years later," Shanely said.His passion for what he does and desire to share it made him a perfect fit when the department created the full time recruiting position four years ago."As a department, we really wanted to focus more specifically on and make an actual effort to recruit more diversity into our fire department," he explained.Captain Shanley says some of the biggest obstacles are simply educating people on what it takes to become a firefighter. And once they do know, then trying to help them get the training they need.EMT schools are spread out all over San Diego County; hard to get to for those in the middle of the city without transportation."So we're working to try to bring some of those classes and resources to be more centrally located so we can solve that equity issue and that’s part of what we’re doing in the department as we speak," said Shanley.While there is still work to do, Captain Shanley says it's important the department has someone like him dedicated to hiring staff representative of the community it serves."I want other people to know this is something you can do, it’s more than just a job, it’s a career." 1950

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A large San Diego Church is continuing to hold in person, indoor services despite orders from San Diego County to hold services in outdoor settings only. Awaken Church has gotten three cease and desist orders at different locations and also had an outbreak at one of those locations, according to San Diego County.County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said the church is not cooperating with the county in regards to the outbreak at their Balboa location, so the county had to publicly announce the community outbreak and ask anyone impacted to quarantine. Typically, the specifics of community outbreaks would not be publicized, but he said the lack of cooperation from the church led to the public notice.“The Awaken Church in general has continued to be very defiant and continue to put the members of their church at a great risk and continue to not cooperate as we seek to investigate positive cases, which led us to the unique situation of publicly reporting that they did have a public outbreak at the Awaken Church,” said Supervisor Fletcher.Anyone who went to the location at 7620 Balboa Ave. between Nov. 15 and Nov. 22 is asked to quarantine for two weeks.Related: County asks Kearny Mesa church attendees to quarantine after COVID-19 outbreakSupervisor Fletcher said the county is trying to find a balance between respecting freedom of religion and also keeping the community safe.“We do recognize the first amendment role and I recognize the important role faith plays in our lives and in our community, particularly in a time of difficulty, which is why we work so hard to try and make sure that it is available, it just has to be available in a safe way,” he said.Glenn Smith is a Professor of Constitutional Law at California Western School of Law and also teaches at UC San Diego, and said there’s a chance churches could fight restrictions in court, but it depends on the circumstances. He said if a church is impacted by blanket rules for an area, they would likely not win in court. A church would have to prove that they were treated differently.“If religions are being treated in a nondiscriminatory fashion, in other words if there’s a general law that establishes how many people can be in a room or what are the conditions, and it happens to have an incidentally impact on religion, that’s not a special problem as long as government has a rational reason for doing that, that’s alright. It’s only when government discriminates against religion that a special level of review called strict scrutiny is required and government has to have a really really good reason for discrimination,” said Smith.He added that the makeup of a court will also impact any future decisions on religious freedom, saying when Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was alive, cases regarding religious freedom during the pandemic were found to not be discriminatory, however with the newly appointed Justice Barrett, it’s more likely the Supreme Court would rule in favor of a church. 3009

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- San Diego State University held an inauguration for their new president. Dr. Adela de la Torre is the ninth president for SDSU but the first female president. She was appointed in 2018. During her speech she said, “I know I stand here as first woman to serve as permanent president to lead this university, but I recognize that I stand on the shoulders of women who have shaped the identity of SDSU from the very beginning”. Looking at the coming years, she says there is critical work that needs to be done. Further, she explains her support for SDSU West and her plans to expand SDSU Imperial Valley, “we will continue to capitalize on its untapped potential,” she says. 699
