CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida, April 29, (Xinhua) -- NASA on Friday delayed space shuttle Endeavor's launch to no earlier than Monday afternoon due to technical problems with heaters in the shuttle's auxiliary power unit."Shuttle Endeavor's launch now no earlier than Monday at 2:33 p. m. EDT (1833 GMT)," NASA said. "Engineers need that time to troubleshoot an issue that resulted in today's launch scrub."During Friday's countdown, engineers detected a failure in one of two heater circuits associated with Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) 1. The Endeavor is scheduled for a Friday afternoon launch.U.S. President Barack Obama, touring storm damage in Alabama on Friday, had been expected to attend the planned 3:47 p.m. (1947 GMT) launch. Obama will still visit Cape Canaveral and then travel to Miami, where he is scheduled to speak at a community college commencement.Endeavor's 14-day mission will deliver the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer-2 (AMS) to the International Space Station. AMS, a particle physics detector, is designed to search for various types of unusual matter by measuring cosmic rays.Its experiments are designed to help researchers study the formation of the universe and search for evidence of dark matter, strange matter and antimatter. Endeavor also will fly the a platform that carries spare parts that will sustain space station operations once the shuttles are retired from service.The mission will feature four spacewalks to do maintenance work and install new components. These are the last scheduled spacewalks by shuttle crew members.Endeavor, which has been promised to the California Science Center in Los Angeles upon its return, was the replacement ship for Challenger, which was lost in a 1986 explosion as it ascended over the Atlantic that killed seven astronauts.It will be the second of NASA's three surviving shuttles to be retired. Sister ship Discovery, which will be transferred to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, completed its last flight in March.Atlantis' final launch is scheduled for June 28. When the U.S. space shuttle program officially ends later this year, the Russian space program's Soyuz capsule will be the only method for transporting astronauts to and from the station.

LOS ANGELES, May 12 (Xinhua) -- A subsurface ocean of molten or partially molten magma exists beneath the surface of Jupiter's volcanic moon Io, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) said on Thursday."The finding heralds the first direct confirmation of this kind of magma layer at Io and explains why the moon is the most volcanic object known in the solar system," JPL said in a press release posted on its website.The finding was based on new data analysis from NASA's Galileo spacecraft, said JPL.The research was conducted by scientists at the University of California, Los Angeles; the University of California, Santa Cruz;, and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. The study is published this week in the journal Science, JPL said."Scientists are excited we finally understand where Io's magma is coming from and have an explanation for some of the mysterious signatures we saw in some of the Galileo's magnetic field data," said Krishan Khurana, lead author of the study and former co- investigator on Galileo's magnetometer team at UCLA."It turns out Io was continually giving off a 'sounding signal' in Jupiter's rotating magnetic field that matched what would be expected from molten or partially molten rocks deep beneath the surface."Io produces about 100 times more lava each year than all the volcanoes on Earth, according to data released by JPL in Pasadena, Los Angeles.While Earth's volcanoes occur in localized hotspots like the "Ring of Fire" around the Pacific Ocean, Io's volcanoes are distributed all over its surface, JPL said, adding that a global magma ocean about 30 to 50 km beneath Io's crust helps explain the moon's activity."It has been suggested that both the Earth and its moon may have had similar magma oceans billions of years ago at the time of their formation, but they have long since cooled," said Torrence Johnson, a former Galileo project scientist based at JPL, an affiliation with NASA."Io's volcanism informs us how volcanoes work and provides a window in time to styles of volcanic activity that may have occurred on the Earth and moon during their earliest history," said Johnson, who was not directly involved in the study.NASA's Voyager spacecraft discovered Io's volcanoes in 1979, making that moon the only body in the solar system other than Earth known to have active magma volcanoes. The energy for the volcanic activity comes from the squeezing and stretching of the moon by Jupiter's gravity as Io orbits the largest planet in the solar system.Galileo was launched in 1989 and began orbiting Jupiter in 1995. Unexplained signatures appeared in magnetic field data from Galileo flybys of Io in October 1999 and February 2000. After a successful mission, the spacecraft was intentionally sent into Jupiter's atmosphere in 2003.

BEIJING, May 5 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese official has vowed to take every possible measure to ensure food safety in the country, saying the government has decided to launch national overhauls this year on sectors including milk products, cooking oil, health foods, meat and alcohol.Zhang Yong, director of the executive office of the food safety commission under the State Council, or Cabinet, said in an interview with Xinhua that the food and drinks in these five sectors are consumed in enormous quantities each day and they will do great harm and have an extensive social impact if a problem arises.Through special campaigns to overhaul these five sectors and by solving the most prominent problems, the government aims to accumulate experiences and create administrative systems in a bid to prevent food safety incidents and raise the overall level of food safety, Zhang said.The central government initiated a prolonged and stringent fight against the illegal use of additives in food last month, detailing measures to intensify supervision, upgrade safety limits, and increase penalties for violators.Vice Premier Li Keqiang warned of the great harm from illegal additives in food at a high-profile national meeting last month, promising a "firm attitude, iron-hand measures and more efforts" in dealing with the problem.Zhang Yong admitted "China is in a period when food safety incidents are likely to arise" since the country's food industry is on a fast track for development and a large number of food producers and catering operators are running their businesses in a small-scale or scattered way."It makes it more difficult for the government departments to conduct supervision on food quality and safety," Zhang said."We will take every possible measure to consolidate the feeble foundation to ensure food safety and curb food safety incidents as soon as possible," he said.According to Zhang, the government will also make efforts to improve supervision and emergency handling capabilities, raise the credibility and personnel quality of the involved enterprises, and severely punish violators.The Chinese government made the moves after a series of food safety scandals emerged despite the authorities' efforts to revamp the country's food industry. JERUSALEM, April 12 (Xinhua) -- Israeli-Canadian archaeologist Simcha Jacobovici may have stumbled upon a major archaeological find if his claim of unearthing the nails used to hold Jesus on the cross during his crucifixion are to be believed.Jacobovici maintains that small metal remains dug out of the soil in a cave in a Jerusalem neighborhood are in fact the nails that held Jesus on the cross, the Ha'aretz daily reported Tuesday.The artifacts were found in a cave in the Armon Hanatziv ridge, about 6 km south of the Old City, during the course of a construction work in 1990. The hilly area now contains apartment buildings.During the excavation of the cave, a stone vessel with the name Caiaphas, the name of the High Priest considered responsible for turning Jesus over to the Romans, and two rusty nails, which Jacobovici believes to be the relics, was unearthed.However, officials from the Israeli Antiquities Authority told Xinhua although they regard Jacobovici as a great archaeologist and documentary filmmaker, they do not believe the cave really belongs to the High Priest of the Second Temple period (between 536 BC and 70 AD)."The reason is that during that period of time there were a lot of people with the name Caiaphas," a statement from the Antiquities Authority said, "And for example, it is inconceivable that every gravestone bearing the name Moshe Dayan, which is very common in these parts, should be ascribed to the same personality who played so prominent a role in our recent history."Dayan was an Israeli army general who led his troops to victory in the 1967 war.The authority considers Jacobovici's contention as "fantasy" that should not be considered conclusive, since there is no agreed- upon evidence backing it up.Jacobovici is standing his ground, however, and contends that during the Second Temple Period the name Caiaphas was uncommon, and therefore the tomb must belong to the infamous priest.Jacobovici, a well-known documentary filmmaker, has produced films about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and human trafficking that earned him two Emmy Awards.He also worked alongside film director James Cameron on the movie Jesus' Lost Tomb.He expects to soon release a movie about the latest finds, entitled Nails on the Cross.

  

WASHINGTON, May 4 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced Wednesday that its Gravity Probe B (GP-B) mission has confirmed two key predictions derived from Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity, which the spacecraft was designed to test.The experiment, launched in 2004, used four ultra-precise gyroscopes to measure the hypothesized geodetic effect, the warping of space and time around a gravitational body, and frame- dragging, the amount a spinning object pulls space and time with it as it rotates.GP-B determined both effects with unprecedented precision by pointing at a single star, IM Pegasi, while in a polar orbit around Earth. If gravity did not affect space and time, GP-B's gyroscopes would point in the same direction forever while in orbit. But in confirmation of Einstein's theories, the gyroscopes experienced measurable, minute changes in the direction of their spin, while Earth's gravity pulled at them.The findings are available online in the journal Physical Review Letters."Imagine the Earth as if it were immersed in honey. As the planet rotates, the honey around it would swirl, and it's the same with space and time," said Francis Everitt, GP-B principal investigator at Stanford University. "GP-B confirmed two of the most profound predictions of Einstein's universe, having far- reaching implications across astrophysics research."GP-B is one of the longest running projects in NASA history, with agency involvement starting in the fall of 1963 with initial funding to develop a relativity gyroscope experiment. Subsequent decades of development led to groundbreaking technologies to control environmental disturbances on spacecraft, such as aerodynamic drag, magnetic fields and thermal variations. The mission's star tracker and gyroscopes were the most precise ever designed and produced.GP-B completed its data collection operations and was decommissioned in December 2010."The mission results will have a long-term impact on the work of theoretical physicists," said Bill Danchi, senior astrophysicist and program scientist at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "Every future challenge to Einstein's theories of general relativity will have to seek more precise measurements than the remarkable work GP-B accomplished."
