The five suspects accused of abusing 11 children at a New Mexico compound were training them to commit school shootings, prosecutors said Wednesday. If the defendants were to "be released from custody, there is a substantial likelihood defendants may commit new crimes due to their planning and preparation for future school shootings," according to the court filings. The complaints did not provide further details about the alleged training.Allegations against the suspects come in the wake of the discovery that 11 starving children had been living in a filthy compound in Amalia, New Mexico, that lacked electricity or plumbing.Authorities raided the compound on Friday as part of their search for Abdul-Ghani Wahhaj, a child with severe medical problems who was allegedly abducted from Georgia by his father, Siraj Wahhaj, about nine months ago.A boy's remains were found at the compound on Monday, police said, although it is not yet clear whether the remains are those of 4-year-old Abdul-Ghani.Five adults -- including Siraj Wahhaj, another man and three women who are thought to be the children's mothers -- each face 11 charges of child abuse related to the neglect and abuse of the children.None of the defendants has been formally charged. All five defendants appeared in court Wednesday afternoon in Taos. 1324

The coronavirus pandemic may have started earlier than previously thought, according to scientists from the CDC.A study from government scientists published November 30 appears to confirm what some health experts have suggested, patients infected with COVID-19 were in the US before the beginning of 2020.“The findings of this report suggest that SARS-CoV-2 infections may have been present in the U.S. in December 2019, earlier than previously recognized. These findings also highlight the value of blood donations as a source for conducting SARS-CoV-2 surveillance studies,” the report states. The first officially documented case of COVID-19 in the US was reported on January 19, a person who had returned to the US after traveling from China. The World Health Organization was alerted to the novel coronavirus by officials in Wuhan, China on December 31, 2019. The CDC researchers say further reports have identified a patient in Wuhan with COVID-19 symptoms as early as December 1, 2019.The study looked at more than 7,000 routine blood donation samples taken by the American Red Cross from people in nine states between December 13, 2019 and January 17, 2020.They found COVID-19 antibodies in 106 samples, mostly from the states of California, Oregon and Washington, from blood collected between December 13-16, 2019. Other samples that indicated COVID-19 antibodies were from Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin taken in early January 2020.“The presence of these serum antibodies indicate that isolated SARS-CoV-2 infections may have occurred in the western portion of the United States earlier than previously recognized or that a small portion of the population may have pre-existing antibodies that bind SARS-CoV-2,” the report states.Scientists acknowledge that patients presenting with what is now known as COVID-19 symptoms before mid-January would likely not have had clinical samples taken or kept because of how new the virus was. Therefore, the CDC used the existing repository collected by the American Red Cross during their routine blood donation process.“These specimens were previously archived for potential future studies to identify emerging transfusion-transmissible infections but were re-purposed for the present study,” researchers stated.Researchers caution that these results are subject to limitations. Although they detected antibodies, that does not mean they are “true positive” COVID-19 tests. In order to get a true positive, a different test would need to be a run. 2545

The cougar spotted traveling through Brookfield, Wisconsin last week was caught on video on someone's front porch.Surveillance video shared with Scripps station TMJ4 in Milwaukee by Dan and Bridget Guerndt shows the cougar coming out from trees. The cougar goes up the residents' driveway and puts its paws on the front window. The footage was captured at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, February 18.On Saturday, a Brookfield resident called the Department of Natural Resources when they saw a cougar lying in their backyard, under a pine tree.Though they confirmed the animal was a cougar, officers were unable to neutralize it because of the surrounding homes and thick brush.DNR agents went back to the scene on Sunday morning, but the cougar was gone. The fifty pounds and approximately 1-year-old cougar was tracked, but the trail was lost.Experts believe this cougar was the same one that was spotted in Washington County two weeks ago. 967

The country’s cybersecurity agency says the hacking campaign discovered earlier this month was “impacting” local governments, in addition to federal and state entities and businesses. In a statement this week, CISA said they are still tracking the “significant cyber incident impacting enterprise networks across federal, state, and local governments, as well as critical infrastructure entities and other private sector organizations.”However, the agency did not give specific examples or further details like how many state and local governments were impacted. The hackers were able to get access to government and business networks through the IT management company SolarWinds’s Orion software supply chain, which are used by government and private businesses. The hack was discovered this month, however officials believe it has been going on for several months.CISA says just because we are aware of the hack doesn’t mean the threat is gone. They warn the hackers have “the resources, patience, and expertise to gain access to and privileges over highly sensitive information if left unchecked. CISA urges organizations to prioritize measures to identify and address this threat.”Last week, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency said the hack posed a “grave threat” to security U.S. government agencies, critical infrastructure entities and private groups.CISA also said at the time the SolarWinds Orion vulnerability was not the only way that hackers were able to get into government agencies, private companies and critical infrastructures over the last several months."CISA has determined that this threat poses a grave risk to the Federal Government and state, local, tribal, and territorial governments as well as critical infrastructure entities and other private sector organizations," the alert issued by the agency said. "CISA expects that removing this threat actor from compromised environments will be highly complex and challenging for organizations."So far, several federal agencies, including the Treasury and Department of Energy, have indicated they were impacted, and Microsoft is reporting in a blog post more than 40 customers around the world appear to have been targeted in the hack.Multiple U.S. officials have implicated Russia in the hack. However, President Donald Trump has not said much about it, other than a tweet that eluded it may have been China who was responsible. 2426

The Danish government said they plan to kill 15 million minks after the animals spread a coronavirus mutation to humans. In a press release, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that a mutation of the virus has already spread from the infected minks to 12 people in North Jutland.Frederiksen added that the virus could spread to other countries and "carry the risk that the upcoming vaccine will not work as it should.""Denmark has a responsibility to our population," Frederiksen said in the news release. "With the mutation that has now been established, we now also have a greater responsibility for the rest of the world. A mutated virus risks being spread from Denmark to other countries. Therefore, we must take the situation on the Danish mink farms extremely seriously." 786
