SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Across San Diego County, most law enforcement agencies have been focusing on education rather than enforcement regarding violations of the county’s public health order.The goal is to get people to comply voluntarily.“What we’re trying to do here is educate the public so that ultimately we can save lives,” said San Diego Sheriff, Bill Gore.In the City of Coronado, police have been offering people free facial coverings.“To approach folks in an enforcement posture, I’m not sure we’re going to get the type of compliance we need,” said Coronado Police Chief Chuck Kaye. “When we see folks that are not using face coverings we say ‘hey can we offer you a face covering?’”This Fourth of July weekend is expected to be busy, especially at local beaches.California Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered all parking lots of state beaches in Southern California and the Bay Area to be closed for the weekend.The City of Oceanside has also decided to close off its beach parking lots.So far, no community COVID-19 outbreaks have been linked to outdoor settings.“I spoke to a number of the coastal mayors and said ‘are you confident you can enforce the physical distancing at your beaches?’” said county’s supervisor, Nathan Fletcher. “They said they can so we have to trust them that they can do that as we move forward into the weekend,” said San Diego County supervisor Nathan Fletcher.“We have our normal patrols in our coastal towns that we police for,” said Gore. “We’re not planning to add enforcement details to be specifically walking on the beaches to look at who’s wearing a mask, who’s socially distanced or not.”Gore said he expects beachgoers to comply with social distancing and facial covering rules when required.Under the latest public health order, restaurants must close to the public from 10 PM TO 5 AM.Bars, wineries, and breweries that don’t serve food must completely close down. Wineries that operate outside are an exception and may stay open.“State regulatory teams will be in different regions, we’ll be working with that team here which part of it is Alcohol Beverage Control and our county regulatory agency,” said Gore. “So, we can do enforcement if we don’t get that voluntary compliance that we’re seeking,” said Gore.The San Diego Police Department said it's anticipating crowds this weekend and will have extra officers patroling the beaches and bays to keep people safe. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two people working on scaffolding on the side of a downtown high-rise were rescued Tuesday after their equipment became stuck.The two workers were stuck 42 stories in the air after their equipment failed just before 10 a.m., leaving their mobile scaffolding stuck, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue.Fire crews climbed to the top floor 46 stories up and were lowered down to the trapped pair. Glass on the 43rd floor of the building was then removed and the workers were hoisted into the building. View this post on Instagram SD Fire-Rescue crews are on scene at a building under construction at 14th and Island. SDFD dispatchers received the request for assistance at about 9:50 Tuesday morning. Two construction workers were on a window washing lift when the lift stopped functioning and the workers were not able to move the lift. USAR 2, engines 2 and 4 and trucks 1 and 11 along with medic 10 responded. The technical rescue team went to the roof and set up the rope system. They lowered down to the construction crew outside the 42nd floor and were able to remove a window on the 43rd floor. The 43rd floor window served as the extraction point. The first construction worker was rescued at 10:52 and the second at 11:01 a.m. The firefighters are now in the process of retrieving their rescue equipment. No injuries. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two men convicted of leading a home-invasion robbery spree with five other people were sentenced to prison terms Friday.A judge sentenced 26-year-old Thomas James Smith to 85 years plus 50 years to life in prison and 22-year-old Aaron Rico III to 35 years plus 25 years to life in prison for their roles the series of violent break-ins.Smith and Rico were convicted of conspiracy to commit burglary, robbery, burglary and sexual assault in June. The violent crime spree began on January 23. The series of crimes included breaking into homes, tying up and assaulting homeowners, and in one case, sexually assaulting a woman. RELATED: 680

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - UC San Diego Police sent out a warning to Faculty and Staff about a series of burglaries this week.  The email states the thefts occurred at occupied and unlocked apartments.  There were three cases of break-ins and attempted break-ins that took place in campus housing complexes. There was another report of a car break-in. But UC San Diego police say the San Diego Police Department is working on nearly 30 burglary cases in the similar area. According to UCSD Police, on Tuesday, a woman at The La Jolla Del Sol apartments reported getting out of the shower and finding a female intruder. The resident yelled, and the thief took off with a backpack, cell phone, purse, and laptop.   On Sunday, a resident at the Mesa Nueva Apartments reported a male intruder removing the screen from his living room window.   On Monday a similar report out of the Sixth College Apartments for undergraduates. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A woman was arrested Monday afternoon after police say she stole a vehicle with two children inside in the San Diego area. Police say a father left his 3-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter in his car with the engine and air conditioner running around noon.After he went into a business, a witness reported seeing a woman get into the car and drive away with the children inside.Police say the 8-year-old was able to call police and tell dispatchers that she and her brother had been kidnapped.Roughly 30 minutes later, Border Patrol detained the suspect trying to cross the border into Mexico.Police have since taken the woman into custody. 680
