Bill Chavez has always been fascinated with big trucks. He comes from a long line of truckers, which is one of the reasons he’s devoted his life for 39 years to the profession. To most people, Chavez’s truck looks like any traditional semi. However, it’s not ordinary, because with a push of a button, it can drive itself. “What we’re trying to do is create the world’s safest self-driving trucks,” says Chuck Price, the chief product officer of TuSimple, the company behind the self-driving semis. TuSimple is currently operating 15 self-driving semis, and Price says by June, they'll have three times that number. “This is actually a laser radar unit; we call it lidar, built into the mirror. This gives us a close-in view,” Price describes. “Then, we have cameras along the top of the vehicle that show us…much further away.” TuSimple’s trucks are already in the southwest part of the country, on interstates across the region. "Our systems see farther, track more objects and respond faster than a human can operate," Price says. Right now, a human must be in the trucks at all times as back-up protocol, but the company says a fully self-driving semi could happen by 2020. The company says when that day comes, it will alleviate one of the industry's biggest problems.Tony Bradley, with the Arizona Trucking Association, says nationwide they're currently 50,000 drivers short. "This is the worst shortage we've seen in the history of trucking,” Bradley stresses. Bradley says 15 years from now, the shortage could be as high as 200,000, thanks to the large number of drivers approaching retirement age. "It's a job that is frankly, not very glamorous," Bradley says. However, the job continues to be appealing to Chavez. "It's just very enjoyable to be out there on the road and being your own boss," Chavez says. He knows that a time may come where drivers might be replaced by this technology. However, he's OK with that idea and says roads will be safer for everyone. "This is a system that's gonna help,” he says. “Either way, it’s helping," Chavez says.However, he says that day is much further down the road. 2133

GOLDEN, Colo. – A person driving a pickup truck with a camper attached to its back nearly slid off an Interstate 70 overpass Tuesday afternoon. The crash, which forced the closure of the eastbound lanes of I-70 in Golden, Colorado, was reported just after 4 p.m. Video from a Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) camera in the area showed the camper with nearly half of its body dangling from the overpass on the right guard rail of the highway. Crews used a combination of cranes and other equipment to get the camper off the guard rail and onto the highway before the vehicle was towed and removed from the overpass. The driver of the camper, who was not immediately identified, was being held on suspicion of DUI, according to a Colorado State Patrol spokesperson. No one was injured. The eastbound lanes of I-70 ta Colfax Ave. were reopened just before 6:30 p.m. Emergency crews were kept busy responding to several crashes and slide-offs on Colorado roads Monday night and Tuesday as a winter storm dumped nearly 3 feet of snow in some areas. BOULDER, Colo. — The COVID-19 outbreak at the University of Colorado Boulder is now the largest in the state, with 1,198 positive cases among students and 104 with probable cases of the virus, according to the latest outbreak data released by state officials Wednesday.Twelve staffers have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the data.CU Boulder on Wednesday switched to fully-remote classes for at least the next two weeks, as university officials work to curb the spread of COVID-19 among students, with cases on the rise and isolation spaces dwindling on campus.Philip DiStefano, CU Boulder chancellor, said in a statement Monday that the move was "in the immediate interest" of the campus community's health. Students are being asked to remain in university housing, and employees will work remotely, if possible.University provost Russell Moore said in a news conference Monday that officials have seen fewer COVID-19 cases in recent days, but "unfortunately, the number of cases is not dropping enough."Students can now face a 10-day suspension — or longer — for violating COVID-19 protocols. Interim executive vice chancellor Patrick O'Rourke said 14 students are currently suspended as they go through the discipline process for health violations. The increased enforcement, O'Rourke said, has led to some change in behavior among students off campus, with fewer violations over the weekend.CU Boulder wasn't the only university to appear on the state's updated outbreak list Wednesday, though it was, by far, the largest.Eight outbreaks were reported at the University of Denver, including several sororities, the gymnastics team and a residential building. The case numbers in those outbreaks ranged from 3-9.Two sororities and a fraternity at Colorado State University also reported outbreaks, with the Kappa Sigma fraternity having the most cases at 13 confirmed and four probable. “Happened nine times in a five year period,” said Dawnie McNamee, a former hiring manager. She says she sees this all the time. “What I found, especially since the stock market has recovered, and jobs now aren’t as rare as they used to be, is there’s a lot of people out there that’ll come in, nail it on the interview. You’ll go through the hiring process, all the paperwork and then their first day they will not show up.” She’s right. Unemployment is at 3.5 percent, the lowest it’s been since in 50 years. That means some employers can’t find someone to take a job. Searching for a new hire can be a little bit like dating, you never know exactly what you’re going to get, it’s expensive, and they may not even show up. I went to a job fair and asked people looking for work if they’d ever consider doing this to a potential employer. “If I had a job offer in hand that I’d accepted," said Julie Ziobro who's looking for a job. “Absolutely not,” said Nathaniel Diamond, a job seeker. I come from a generation, and I grew up, making phone calls, don’t text,” said Cummings. “I definitely wouldn’t do it without communicating; that’s not fair,” said Ziobro. “Just let them know, like, 'Hey, I got a job that better suits my skill set, and I’m going to take that one instead,'” said Joshua Curry, a job seeker.No one was ready to admit they’d leave an employer hanging out to dry. But it doesn’t mean there are no other signs. “We really want to take a look at their job history to look at, are they a job hopper? Are they moving around every three months or every six months with different companies. To me that would signal someone is always looking for that next best thing,” says Keely Teynor, who runs her own hiring firm. Teynor says there are a few things employers can do, including looking at someone’s job history. “Even in this really tight labor market, the unemployment rate is so low, we kind of have to find this nice balance of having multiple steps in the process to show they’re really invested and interested in this opportunity,” she says.She says that process helps her avoid the dreaded no show on an employee’s first day. McNamee can still remember the sting of being stood up. “People are excited to have new hires come in and be a part of your team," she says. "And so when you have people not show up, leaves a little mud on your face.“I’ve stayed awake quite a few nights wondering about that what could I have done better.” 3127
