SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Police are investigating the murder of a man stabbed in the chest during a fight in San Diego's Southcrest neighborhood.San Diego Police homicide detectives were called to the 3400 block of Newton Avenue Wednesday just before 11:30 a.m., near Interstate 15 and just a block away from Emerson/Bandini Elementary School. Police said they found a man stabbed in the chest at least once, following a fight at a homeless encampment under I-15.The man died at UCSD Medical Center.Police said they have the suspect accused of the murder in custody after several homeless people who witnessed the fight helped police track the suspect down at a nearby park.Police have identified the victim but are not releasing his name. The suspect was only identified as a 30-year-old man by police. 865

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police on the campus of San Diego State University are hoping surveillance photos will lead to an arrest in a recent burglary. The pictures are clear. They show two men walking in the hallway of a campus building. Another photo shows them at a different angle. Police aren't releasing details about the burglary, but they say right now, there is no threat to campus. This is the latest in a series of crimes on or near campus. Last Wednesday night around 8:30, two men armed with guns robbed two people as they sat in their car. It happened in the north alley off of 55th and Montezuma. Taylor Langpap and her roommate, Jessica Ancar, walk the alley all the time to get to their apartment. "I was a little uneasy that it was just really close to my apartment, but I wasn't really surprised cause stuff like that happens all the time here," said Jessica. In the fall, there was a string or robberies where students had their cellphones stolen. In another case, a man was charged with ripping off students who were trying to sell things on the App Offer Up. Campus police aren't saying if the men in the surveillance photos are wanted in any other crimes, but students say they are always taking precautions, especially when walking after dark. "I make sure to call one of my family members or a friend, and then if I am not on the phone with someone, I try to keep very aware of my surroundings. They have blue lights around campus, you just have to make sure where those are so you can get where you are going safely," said Alexandra Howder. 1570

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are investigating after a 19-year-old was shot in Chicano Park Wednesday night. According to San Diego Police, the teen was walking with a group of men in the park just before 7 p.m. when an argument broke out and an unknown suspect pulled out a handgun. Several shots were fired at the 19-year-old, who was hit twice by the gunfire, police say. The victim ran away from the scene and was taken to the hospital by an acquaintance. He sustained non-life threatening injuries, police say. Both the victim and acquaintance were unable to provide any details about the shooting. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Poway Unified School District officials say they are going fully online for the fall school year after originally planning to give students the option for in-person instruction.In a letter to parents on Wednesday, the school district said that "stringent" standards that need to be met for in-person classes "have made it impossible for any San Diego County school district to physically reopen schools for in-person instruction before mid-September."PUSD said it planned for the possibility to resume classes in-person after the county was off the state's monitoring list for 14 consecutive days. But the requirement now requires that the county is off the watch list for 28 consecutive days, and if at any point the county exceeds the threshold for three days, it would be back on the state list and have to go through another 28-day cycle."In late Fall, we will reevaluate our plans taking into full consideration then-current public health conditions, and guidelines and restrictions from the Governor and public health department," the district said in a release. "While this information is likely to disappoint the majority of our staff and families who indicated a desire to return to on-campus learning as soon as possible, everyone should know that -- due to our extensive planning thus far -- PUSD will be ready for a prompt and safe return to in-person instruction if permitted to do so come January."The school district says its 2020-21 school year will start virtually on Sept. 2, and remain fully virtual through the December break from Dec. 21 to Jan. 1, 2021.The district adds that teachers and instructional assistants will receive additional training in virtual teaching platforms and tools in August and that the district will provide all the necessary technology for teachers and students. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More than two dozen Little Italy restaurants are likely to become San Diego's first to install "parklets," which will allow expanded outdoor dining each day of the week. The work is expected to start Friday. A parklet is a sealed off portion of curbside parking spaces that would instead be reserved for restaurants to set up tables and serve people outside. On Friday, at least eight Little Italy restaurants will start installing the parklets, but that number could grow to more than 25 if the city approves the permits in time. The city is currently streamlining these kinds of permits for retailers and restaurants and waving fees. The idea is to give businesses more room to make money amid new social distancing restrictions that disallow indoor dining in restaurants. "It is vital, absolutely," said Paolo Tagliani, general manager of Salunto, a bakery restaurant on India Street. "We need fresh air, too."More than 100 restaurants in San Diego have applied for parklet permits. The city approved 48 of them on the first day it began processing the applications. Restaurants in the Gaslamp and North Park have also applied. Little Italy had already instituted an Al Fresco program, which closed India Street to the public on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays to allow outside dining. The parklets would allow outdoor dining daily. The Gaslamp Quarter Association has a similar program on Fifth Avenue from L Street to F Street.
