Tasmanian Devils are taking the next step in a “rewilding” project that could someday bring the species back to the Australian mainland for the first time in about 3,000 years.Actor Chris Hemsworth and his wife helped release 11 into a predator-free sanctuary north of Sydney alongside conservationists. This makes nearly 30 animals in this protected space this year.Hemsworth is from Australia. Scientists will now use tracking devices and cameras to monitor how the animals do and whether they can be released into a wild environment eventually. The project is being called #DevilComeback.Tasmanian Devils were once found in Australia, but are now only found in the wild on the island of Tasmania.According to the preservation group Aussie Ark, the animals went extinct in Australia about 3,000 years ago due to being hunted by the Dingo. There are no Dingos in Tasmania, and the Tasmanian Devil is the island’s top predator. However, in 1996, scientists detected an infectious cancer affecting the Tasmanian Devil population. Roughly 90 percent of the population has died as the disease spread rapidly, according to Aussie Ark.Since then, Aussie Ark has created a breeding center for the animals. The 30 animals being released in the latest project came from this center.Tasmanian Devils prefer open forests and woodlands, and are more scavengers than hunters. They have a short life span, 5-to-6 years in the wild and about 8 years in captivity. 1455

Summer camps have been among a number of spots that have been known as “super spreaders” of the coronavirus,” locations where dozens or even hundreds of infections have spread. While there is an inherent risk with holding camps amid the coronavirus pandemic, the CDC says with proper precautions, the risk can be minimized. This week, the CDC outlined efforts by four summer camps in Maine held over the summer. The camps combined for more than 1,000 attendees coming from 41 states or territories. The result was a success, with only three known asymptomatic cases of the virus stemming from the camps. Testing played a key role in minimizing the risk. The attendees were tested days before coming to the camp. Of 1,022 attendees, four tested positive, which delayed their arrival. Attendees were also told to isolate in the days leading up to their arrival.Once at the camp, attendees were frequently checked for symptoms. During the camp, 12 people were isolated at times due to presenting symptoms, but all tested negative for the coronavirus. There were also three cases identified during the camps among asymptomatic attendees, two of whom were staffers. The three attendees were isolated for 10 days and not cleared until receiving two negative tests.“Thoughtful and prudent public health practices used during overnight summer camps in Maine reinforces how powerful everyday preventive actions are in reducing and keeping COVID-19 transmission low,” CDC director Robert Redfield. “Despite more than 1,000 campers and staff from nearly every state and seven countries, only three people tested positive for COVID-19 during the camp and no additional campers or staff were known to be infected. Using a combination of proven public health strategies to slow the spread of COVID-19, campers and staff were able to enjoy a traditional summer pastime amid a global pandemic.”To read more about how the camps avoided an outbreak of the coronavirus, click here. 1968

Statistics released by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on Friday claimed that 10,000 Americans were injured from firework mishaps in 2019, resulting in 12 fatalities. The agency says that 73% of the incidents occurred between June 21 and July 21. While seemingly more harmless than other fireworks, sparklers accounted for a plurality of the injuries, resulting in 900 injuries, half of those were from children under the age of 5.The CSPC said that fireworks killed at least 12 Americans in 2019, several of the deaths happened when victims held and ignited fireworks. With many local firework shows canceled or postponed this summer, there is concern over even more mishaps occurring this summer."Many Americans will not get to see the grand, professional fireworks displays this 4th of July given the cancellations of public celebrations and stay-at-home orders across the country. As an alternative, people are purchasing their own fireworks in an effort to recreate that tradition at home," said CPSC Commissioner Dana Baiocco. "The need for safety awareness regarding fireworks is greater than ever," she said, "and anyone who plans to use consumer fireworks this year should review and follow CPSC's simple safety tips to prevent injuries and incidents."The CSPC issued the following tips for a safe celebration:Never allow young children to play with, or ignite, fireworks, including sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit—hot enough to melt some metals.Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy, in case of fire or other mishap.Light fireworks one at a time, then move away quickly.Never try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks. Soak them with water and throw them away.Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Move to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.Never point or throw fireworks (including sparklers) at anyone. After fireworks complete their burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding the device to prevent a trash fire.Make sure fireworks are legal in your area, and only purchase fireworks that are labeled for consumer (not professional) use.For more fireworks safety tips, visit www.cpsc.gov/fireworks. 2308
