BEIRUT (AP) — Lebanese officials targeted in the investigation of the massive blast that tore through Beirut sought to shift blame for the presence of explosives at the city’s port, and the visiting French president warned that without serious reforms the country would “continue to sink.” The blast, which appeared to have been caused by an accidental fire that ignited a warehouse full of ammonium nitrate at the city’s port, rippled across the Lebanese capital, killing at least 135 people, injuring more than 5,000 and causing widespread destruction. It also may have accelerated the country’s coronavirus outbreak, as thousands flooded into hospitals in the wake of the blast.French President Emmanuel Macron visited Thursday amid widespread pledges of international aid.Macron, who viewed the devastated port and was to meet with senior Lebanese officials, said the visit is “an opportunity to have a frank and challenging dialogue with the Lebanese political powers and institutions.”He said France will work to coordinate aid but warned that “if reforms are not made, Lebanon will continue to sink.”The head of Lebanon’s customs department meanwhile confirmed in an interview with LBC TV late Wednesday that officials had sent five or six letters over the years to the judiciary asking that the ammonium nitrate be removed because of the dangers it posed. But Badri Daher said all he could do was alert authorities to the presence of dangerous materials, saying even that was “extra work” for him and his predecessor. He said the port authority was responsible for the material, while his job was to prevent smuggling and collect duties. 1652

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Kids with autism aren't damaged. They just connect with people differently. That's what scientists Dr. Marcus Thomeer and Dr. Chris Lopata have been trying to prove through research for 20 years.“The longitudinal research on our kids shows that they have limited capacity to get and maintain a job, they have social isolation, prolonged dependence on family members,” said Dr. Lopata. They're co-directors of the Institute for Autism Research at Canisius College. After several clinical trials, they say they've found something effective to help change the lives of high-functioning children living with autism. Researchers work one-on-one with students to improve their social skills “These are kids that want to have friends, they just don’t know how to do it. They have so much to offer, but we need to make sure we’re giving them skills,” said Dr. Thomeer. They've created programs and clinical trials to focus on improving these skills. They just finished their most recent trial called "MaxOut" for kids ages 7 to 12.They're focused on maximizing? four skills:1. Social skills2. Face and emotion recognition3. Expanding their interests4. Understanding non-literal languageFor 18 weeks they worked on these social skills with 88 children, one-on-one. The results were positive.“We’re seeing our kids have friendships and have kids come over and they’re being invited to birthday parties,” said Dr. Lopata. These IAR research trials are free for the participants Researchers say these new social skills are sticking with them, weeks after they've been practiced. The pair has seen positive results in their studies in schools (SchoolMax), summer programs (SummerMax), and more. Their next step is to take this program into the child’s home (HomeMax) and eventually across the country to help millions.“We’re looking to show that these are evidence-based programs that can be effective in improving the social performance of individuals with an autism spectrum disorder,” said Dr. Thomeer. Researchers want these programs to help children everywhere If you're a parent of a child living with autism or just interested in learning more, you can visit their website by clicking here or call 716-888-2800.They're now taking applications for MaxFit, their program focusing on these skills during fitness activity. It's free to participate. This story was first published by Taylor Epps at WKBW in Buffalo, New York. 2525

Belgian authorities are investigating the killing of three people in the eastern city of Liege on Tuesday as a terror attack, the country's prosecutor said. The incident occurred at around 10:30 a.m. (4:30 a.m. ET) when an assailant stabbed two policemen from behind before stealing their service weapons and using them on the officers, Liege Prosecutor Philippe Dulieu said at a news conference on Tuesday. After killing the two police officers, the attacker continued walking through the street and opened fire on a parked vehicle, fatally wounding the driver inside, Dulieu added.According to the prosecutor, the suspect then took refuge in a local high school where he held a woman hostage. When police intervened, the man opened fire, injuring several other officers, before he was shot dead.It is not yet clear what the attacker's motive may have been, a spokesperson from the Liege prosecutor's office told CNN earlier. Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said he and the government send their thoughts to the victims and their families. The Belgian Royal Palace also tweeted its sympathies following the shooting. "Our thoughts are with the victims of this horrible act. Courage to their loved ones," the tweet read.According to CNN affiliate VTM, Michel and King Philippe of Belgium are on their way to Liege.Belgian Interior Minister Jan Jambon said on Twitter that the country's crisis center had been monitoring the situation. The crisis center said that the students in the school were safe and that none had been injured.Liege resident Didier Deflem filmed a video allegedly showing special intervention police units shooting at the Liege attacker in front of the Waha high school.Deflem told CNN: "Police made us enter the building to protect us. The PAB (Peloton anti-banditisme, a special intervention unit of the city of Liege) intervened. The man wanted to run out and he was shot down. That's all I saw. We're still in shock."Pierre Etienne Dit Pave, who teaches French language classes nearby, told CNN he was first alerted to the attack by a "commotion in the street" and went out to investigate."At one point a policeman told me to go inside. I went back to the classroom and locked the door for a while," he said. "We heard a lot of shots. We didn't see anything because we were locked in the room. We were waiting for police to give us the clearing."Liege is Belgium's third-largest city, after Brussels and Antwerp, according to the national tourist office. For centuries, it has been an important cultural and industrial center for the country. In 2011, Liege was the scene of a grenade and gun attack that left at least 5 dead and injured more than 100.The-CNN-Wire 2699
