SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In an effort to accelerate hiring and training of more border officer, National Guard members were deployed Tuesday to ports of entry along San Diego County's border with Mexico. In total, 24 National Guard troops joined Customs and Border Protection personnel at Port of San Diego, and ports of entry in San Ysidro, Otay Mesa, Tecate, and Calexico. They will not be taking part in any enforcement activities, according to CBP, instead, helping in surveillance support and operations. The deployed troops will not be armed.RELATED: Border Patrol officials discuss National Guard deployment to US-Mexico borderUp to 106 additional National Guard troops may be sent to the ports of entry in the coming weeks, CBP added."The contribution of the National Guard will undoubtedly improve our effectiveness at the ports of entry by enabling those officers to focus on enforcement activities," Pete Flores, CBP Director of field operations for San Diego, said. "We look forward to working collaboratively to further our national security mission."CBP says the additional troops will allow border personnel to focus on securing areas of the border against drug, weapons, and human smuggling. 1247

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — La Mesa-Spring Valley School District officials have postponed the district's planned reopening date, citing concerns that San Diego County will soon be placed in the state's most restrictive reopening tier. The district's reopening has been moved from Oct. 12 for hybrid learning to the week of Nov. 30, according to the district. The hybrid learning plan will bring small groups of students to in-person classes two days a week.LMSV said the decision was based on the county's potential rollback into California's purple reopening tier and the district's proximity to the College Area, where cases linked to San Diego State have steadily increased since school resumed on Aug. 24.RELATED: Supervisors to discuss reopening options if San Diego moves into more restrictive tierThe district called SDSU's case increase "particularly concerning.""We decided to postpone our reopening date after learning the county would likely be downgraded to tier 1 on the state COVID-19 tier system. The outbreaks at SDSU are particularly concerning due to the fact that many SDSU students live in our community and work at our schools. SDSU is our community. We felt it was best to err on the side of caution and postpone our reopening date in the hopes that the outbreaks subside," the district said in a statement to ABC 10News."We want nothing more than to welcome students back on campus, but we must ensure that it is safe to do so. The last thing we want is for our schools to open only to close again."RELATED: What happens if San Diego County moves to California's most restrictive tierIn a letter to parents, the district extended its "learning options survey" to allow families to vote on their preference between hybrid or 100% online classes.County public health officials reported a 7.9 case rate over the last week, putting the region on track to the state's most restrictive reopening tier. County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten said Tuesday that without SDSU's cases factored into the case rate, the county would not qualify to move back into the purple tier.Wooten has said that even if the county moves back, schools will still be permitted to hold in-person classes. 2206

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In anticipation of Fire Prevention Week, Cal Fire is urging Californians to pre-plan for the worst case scenario.According to Cal Fire, homes today burn faster than ever, leaving just minutes to escape once the smoke alarm sounds. This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “look, listen and learn.” In support of the week, the agency is asking Californians to develop a fire plan and practice it.RELATED: Woman, mad at ex-boyfriend, accused of sparking massive Maryland apartment fireCal Fire offers tips on making the plan, such as checking to make sure fire alarms are working and making sure there are two ways out of every room like a door and window.Heating equipment is one of the leading causes of house fires, Cal Fire says. Space heaters often cause home fires. Cal Fire warns residents to keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment.“As we approach Fire Prevention Week, now is the time to take a look around your home and see where your hidden hazards are,” said Chief Dennis Mathisen, California State Fire Marshal.RELATED: Lit flare thrown into car parked in Lake Murray neighborhood“That means go room by room, and really look closely at where you have items placed, stored, and plugged in. We all can do a better job of reducing our risks by being more fire aware and creating a potentially life-saving escape plan and then practicing it.”Check out the list below for more on this year’s theme: 1478

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Local leaders, including Mayor Kevin Faulconer, gathered at a Menorah lighting at San Diego City Hall. Rabbi Zalman Carlebach says with so many recent events of anti-Semitism, it’s important for communities like San Diego to come together in the spirit of peace. "In light of the current events that are happening around the country, that this world could use some more light. America could use some more light."There are several Hanukkah events scheduled around San Diego. For a list of events click here. 535

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's been 25 years since President Bill Clinton approved Operation Gatekeeper, the measure focused on the issue of immigrants crossing the border illegally — specifically the San Diego sector. Two key parts of Operation Gatekeeper were surveillance equipment and enforcement infrastructure, like walls and fences. Twenty-five years later, Border Patrol Agent Theron Francisco tells 10News, "Before Gatekeeper this area was in utter chaos, agents were apprehending 1,000 per shift. We had hundred of thousands of apprehensions a year." It's a measure that Francisco says paved the way for Border Patrol today."It's absolutely night and day from where we were back then," Francisco said.Tuesday, those against Operation Gatekeeper held a rally. Former Border Patrol agent Jenn Budd tells 10News, "That was the whole purpose, to push them out here to make it more difficult and dangerous for them to cross. I didn't want to be a part of it but its something I have to admit I was a part of."Budd tells 10News, it's partly why she left Border Patrol, "I left because I felt the policies we were enacting were killing people and what we were representing to the public wasn't the truth." Meantime, Border Patrol agents say it's only helped increase San Diego safety."The days are gone where illegal aliens are running through people's backyards trying to hide from Border Patrol," Francisco added. Budd says, "We need them to work for us, we need them to protect our borders we need them to keep drug smugglers out, but we don't need children dying in their custody and all sorts of things they're doing right now." 1637
