The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a report today that says fentanyl has become the deadliest drug in the nation, overtaking heroin. From 1999 to 2016, drug overdose deaths in the United States tripled from 6.1 per 100,000 people to 19.8 per 100,000 people, the CDC report says. The study examined decedents who were U.S. residents with an underlying cause of death being a drug overdose, including people who did it unintentionally and intentionally (suicide and homicide and undetermined reasons)."The top 10 drugs involved in overdose deaths remained consistent throughout the 6-year period, 622

The conversation around wearing different protective gear is expanding. In particular, face shields.Teachers recently asked the nation’s top infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, about it and he said, “if you can get one, it’s not a bad idea.”Fauci went on to say that a shield shouldn't necessarily be worn in place of a mask, but more parents are considering the option for kids.“For some of the kids, a mask just isn't going to work. And in those cases, a face shield can be considered, but I think it needs to be understood that that’s not the default,” said Dr. Preeti Malani with the Infectious Diseases Society of America.Infectious disease experts say there just isn't enough data yet on how much protection a face shield provides. One study found it did significantly reduce the number of inhaled droplets, but cloth masks are also about protecting others. Shields were not as sure to do that as well.“If you're wearing a shield, the respiratory secretions that might be coming from your mouth or nose are not going to be as well contained,” said Malani. In the health care setting, face shields are used primarily to prevent splashing in the eyes.Malani offered this advice about finding the right shield.“It’s important that it’s long enough to really protect the whole face and that it wraps around fully and that it fits well up at the forehead,” said Malani.Companies, including Apple, Nike, General Motors, and John Deere have all started producing face shields. In a JAMA Network open viewpoint, it was pointed out that face shields have some advantages over masks. They can be reused indefinitely, they are easier to clean, they are comfortable, and they help prevent touching of the face. 1719

The four former police officers who were involved in an arrest that led to the death of George Floyd will asked a judge Friday that their cases be tried separately. In a hearing scheduled on Friday local time in Minneapolis, attorneys for Derek Chauvin, J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane and Tou Thao asked Judge Peter Cahill that it will be "impossible" to evaluate each individuals' actions "in a vacuum," according to the Associated Press.According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, prosecutors opposed the requests, noting that witnesses and Floyd's family members are likely to be "traumatized" by multiple trials. They also argued that the "interests of justice" necessitate a single trial."Here, all four Defendants worked together to murder Floyd: Chauvin, Kueng, and Lane pinned Floyd face-down, while Thao stopped the crowd from intervening, enabling the other Defendants to maintain their positions. Defendants also discussed and coordinated their actions throughout the incident," prosecutors wrote in a court filing, according to The Associated Press. The Associated Press also reports that the request by the defendants indicates that the officers will seek to blame each other for Floyd's death. Attorneys for Lane and Kueng have already claimed that because their clients were rookies at the time, they were following the lead of Chauvin. The Star-Tribune also reports that the officers' attorneys sought a change of venue for the trial. Among their concerns about holding the trial in Minneapolis is a "tainted" jury pool.Judge Cahill took all of the defense's requests under advisement, according to ABC News. He did grant their request that four attorneys for the prosecution be dismissed from the case.Cahill said Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman and the three other attorneys should be dismissed from the case because they discussed autopsy results with the medical examiner, according to ABC.Defense attorneys have also filed a motion to dismiss the case, but the Star-Tribune reports that the judge is unlikely to discuss that motion Friday.Chauvin has been charged with second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. The other three officers are charged with aiding and abetting murder and manslaughter.A trial date has been set for March 2021.Floyd died as officers attempted to arrest him for allegedly using counterfeit bills to buy tobacco on Memorial Day weekend. Bystander video showed Chavin kneeling on Floyd's neck for more than eight minutes as Floyd cried for help. All four officers were fired in the days following Floyd's death.Floyd's death sparked a massive wave of protests against police brutality and systemic racism across the country. 2727

The CDC announced Friday a pilot project intended on decreasing chronic diseases in high-risk communities. The government is putting million toward the project to address five areas of social detriments. Some groups—including racial and ethnic minorities, those living in poverty, and people in certain parts of the country—are disproportionately impacted by the burden of chronic conditions, the CDC said.“Chronic diseases touch every American, in one way or another,” said Karen Hacker, M.D., M.P.H., director of CDC’s NCCDPHP. “This important pilot project will help us better understand strategies to advance health equity and reduce the immense burden of chronic disease.”The program will address five areas on concern, said the CDC:Built environment: human-made surroundings that influence overall community health and individual behaviors that drive healthCommunity-clinical linkages: connections made among health care systems and services, public health agencies, and community-based organizations to improve population healthFood insecurity: an economic and social condition characterized by limited or uncertain access to adequate and nutritious foodSocial connectedness: the degree to which individuals or groups of individuals have and perceive a desired number, quality, and diversity of relationships that create a sense of belonging and being cared for, valued, and supportedTobacco-free policy: population-based preventive measures to reduce tobacco use and tobacco-related morbidity and mortality. The CDC said it will work with the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials and the National Association of County and City Health Officials to identify community to join the pilot program. 1727

The Federal Reserve will almost certainly raise interest rates Wednesday at Jerome Powell's first meeting as chairman. The question is what his plans will be for the central bank later this year, as the Fed wrestles with how to prevent the economy from overheating. Some hints may come when Powell and members of the Federal Open Market Committee release their revised economic forecasts. The Fed is likely to stick with its three planned rate hikes this year for now, but may hint at a fourth. The Fed will release its rate hike decision and updated forecasts at 2 p.m. ET. Powell will take questions from reporters at his first press conference a half-hour later at 2:30 p.m. ET.Powell, who began a four-year term last month, has expressed confidence that the next few years will be "good years for the economy" and that many challenges for the economy have faded into the background. That message has been echoed by Powell's colleagues on the Fed board.Fed Governor Lael Brainard, who has advocated slower rate hikes, has more recently expressed optimism about the trajectory of the economy. Those cheery comments suggest she may support faster action by the Fed to tighten monetary policy."Many of the forces that acted as headwinds to US growth and weighed on policy in previous years are generating tailwinds currently," she said earlier this month in a speech pointing to the recent fiscal stimulus from tax cuts and higher spending.Fed officials are assessing the impact of the .5 trillion tax cut enacted earlier this year. The Fed is also watching for signs that inflation is coming closer to the central bank's target of 2%.  1647
