A park in Florida that was named after a Sanford police chief, who is known for forcing the removal of Major League Baseball legend Jackie Robinson from a minor league game in 1946, will no longer bear his name.On Monday, the Sanford City Commission voted to rename the Roy G. Williams Park to Elliott Avenue Park.Williams served as chief of police from the 1920s to the 1960s, according to the commission.The reason behind the name change is according to the city's website, Robinson was in Sanford on April 7, 1946, playing in an exhibition game for the Montreal Royals.According to the commission's documents, at the top of the second inning, Williams ordered Robinson to quit "because the city did not allow integrated teams to use city-owned fields."Williams then entered the dugout and told Robinson's manager that if he didn't leave the ballpark, it would be called off, the document stated.Robinson went on to break the race barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. 983

A new warning has come that more older adults, over the age of 65, are dying from falls.According to the Centers for Disease Control it's increased from about 18,000 a decade ago to 30,000 in 2016. That number could climb to as many as 59,000 by 2030. Luckily falls are preventable. Here are the main things you can do to keep your house safe.These are small changes you can start making now even if you're not over 65 or not concerned about falling. Jason McCullough with Brothers Redevelopment Inc. walked The Now through a house to show some of those changes. The best part is they're relatively easy.McCullough said some of the changes actually start before you get inside the house."Most falls happen (in) main entry areas, kitchens and baths," McCullough said.According to McCullough a grab bar is a versatile tool that can help in any room."They come in a kind of a decorative finish," McCullough said. "This one's brushed steel.  So we usually place these in a bathroom. We'll do a vertical installation for transitions in and out of the tub. And then sometimes we'll also place a diagonal installation so that when you're in the tub you have more safety and stability."McCullough showed how it should look."It's at a height where she can grab it," McCullough said. "It's on a vertical next to the tub. So she can use that getting in and out of the tub, so it's a great transitional stability piece."He said tubs can be an area prone for falls."You have these custom tubs," McCullough said. "Obviously they're raised so they're a little higher than your normal tub is, but it's still, you can see it's below my knee, so that's much more of a fall risk 'cause you're going to catch that and you can't really catch yourself and you're going all the way in. But if you have this, you have something to hold on to."Transitions from room to room can be fall hazards as well."So this would be an issue right here because we have a rise in the floor and this transition's a little thin," McCullough said as he pointed to a change in floor height in a threshold.  "We'd want to see a wider, more sloped transition piece here or we'd want the floor installed level with the other existing floor."McCullough said fall dangers can even be outdoors. He pointed out several issues in the backyard."This is a great example of where we get comfortable and we miss things over the years," McCullough said, as he pointed to steps without rails.  "Our houses age just like we do.  And as we get older, a lot of times our eyesight starts to go, their motor skills start to slip and they don't notice things that they would have, or someone new to their house would have noticed.  And just this kind of little small ledge here, this could be a trip hazard and you don't have anything to grab onto if you do trip and fall."Another thing to consider is if you find yourself always grabbing the wall or you visit a loved one and you notice marks on the wall, that may be a sign that it's time to consider these upgrades. 3068

A Memphis woman wants answers after getting a nearly ,000 dollar bill from Memphis Light, Gas and Water.Florence Ford said the utility insisted the astronomical amount is no mistake.They told her a water leak led to the 5-figure bill, but Ford doesn't think MLGW's story is adding up.The 60-year-old brings in just enough every month from disability checks to pay her rent and insurance costs."I had four blood clots, I’ve got nerve damage on the right side and I had a stroke," she said.So, when Ford opened up her bill late January for ,423, she was floored.Her normally bill had skyrocketed to ,995 for water alone, just for one month."What the hell? If I’m on a fixed income, how can I pay a ,000 water bill?" she said.Ford called MLGW and said she was told the massive bill was due to a water leak on her property, and that she’d need a plumber to fix it."Some pipe or something had come loose and they took care of it," she said.According to Ford's bill, her water usage during the month of December was 4,983 CCFs (centum cubic feet). That’s close to 4 million gallons, which is enough to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool almost six times.MLGW told Ford a representative called her and left a note on her door, but she said before getting that bill, no one from the utility ever reached out to tell her there was a problem."Didn’t call, didn’t leave a voicemail, said they left a note on the door. No note on the door," she said.A friend and former lawyer told Ford it would be impossible not to realize that much water was leaking in front of her home."He said if I had a ,000 water bill, my house should have been floating down the street somewhere," she said.Ford said she spoke to someone at MLGW again, who suggested she file for bankruptcy.The next month she got another bill, leaving her owing nearly ,000, which is just a couple hundred dollars shy of what she brings in in an entire year."If I don’t pay that, they’re going to cut my utilities off, so I’m going to be without utilities," Ford said. "What am I supposed to do? Sit in the dark?"She's also on a breathing machine, which needs electricity to operate.MLGW agreed to credit Ford’s account ,980, but she says that’s not good enough."I think they should squash it. A Russian woman who needed surgery to address ovarian cysts was given Fedyaeva formalin, a solution that contains formaldehyde, which is used to preserve bodies, Russian state media organization RT reported.Ekaterina Fedyaeva, 28, was told by doctors the procedure would be routine. Little did she know it know that the laparoscopic procedure to remove the cysts would kill her. Fedyaeva was supposed to be given saline solution, but instead was given the formaldehyde-type solution. Fedyaeva then complained to her mother, saying that she was "dying."It turns out she was right. Doctors tried to wash her abdominal cavity of the formaldehyde.Her organs began failing. In response, doctors tried to keep her alive, but she died last Thursday. Russia's minister of health, family and social well-being Rashid Abdullov said, "I express my sincere condolences to the relatives and relatives of Catherine Fedjaevoj. It's a big tragedy! We will provide all the necessary assistance to the family. All the guilty officials have already been held accountable, the investigating authorities continue to work."It is unclear how doctors mixed up the two solutions. Authorities in Russia have opened a criminal investigation into the surgery.   1341
