FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Fort Lauderdale officials say 211.6 million gallons of sewage has spilled into Fort Lauderdale waterways in the past few months. The Sun-Sentinel reports that’s enough to fill 320 Olympic-sized pools. The city’s aging sewer pipes broke six times in December and spewed 126.9 million gallons of sewage — ranking as one of South Florida’s biggest spills ever. The spills fouled the Tarpon River, the Himmarshee Canal and streets in three neighborhoods. Officials also told the state Department of Environmental Protection that 79.3 million gallons spilled into nearby George English Lake over a 10-day period that began on Jan. 30 and ended on Feb. 8. 690

Four people were killed and six more wounded when “unknown suspects” sneaked into a backyard filled with people at a party in central California and fired into the crowd, police said. The shooting took place about 6 p.m. on the Fresno’s southeast side, where people were gathered to watch a football game, Fresno Police Lt. Bill Dooley said.Deputy Chief Michael Reid told the Fresno Bee and the KSEE/KGPE TV stations that a total of 10 people were shot, with three found dead in the backyard. A fourth person died at the hospital. Six others are expected to survive and are recovering at the hospital. All the victims were Asian men ranging from ages 25 to 35, Reid said.“What we do know is that this was a gathering, a family and friend gathering in the backyard,” Dooley said. “Everyone was watching football this evening when unknown suspects approached the residence, snuck into the backyard and opened fire.”The victims were taken to Community Regional Medical Center in critical condition, and some are now stable, the TV stations reported.About 35 people were at the party when the shooting began, Reid said.“Thank God that no kids were hurt,” he said.No one is in custody in connection with the shooting. Police said there was no immediate indication that the victims knew the shooter or shooters.Police were going door-to-door in search of surveillance video that might help them track down the suspects. The shooting took place about a half-mile from the city’s airport.Agents from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives field office in San Francisco were responding to the shooting, the Bee reported. It was at least the second fatal gun attack Sunday in southeast Fresno, the Bee reported. A man in his 20s was shot to death early Sunday at a home in another part of the city. Police have not said whether the incidents could be connected.Sunday’s shootings in Fresno also come on the heels of at least two mass shootings in California. For travelers, there are few things more annoying than a delayed flight. That's what Kristen Dundas of Windermere, Florida, thought until her Southwest Airlines flight from Orlando to Washington was delayed Thursday -- and she actually ended up enjoying the experience."My flight to Washington DC has been delayed for almost 2 and a half hours and I was getting HEATED until this gate agent started playing games with everyone waiting to pass the time and now I'm like I'll wait all damn night if you keep this up," she tweeted Thursday. The tweet included a video showing a gate agent hosting a contest for the "worst driver's license picture."The agent also hosted a paper airplane contest, said Dundas. She said winners were awarded vouchers and Southwest merchandise. In reply to Dundas' tweet, a Southwest Airlines representative replied: "I'm glad our agent was able to make the delay a little more bearable for y'all, Kristen! We hope to have you on your way ASAP."Although Dundas didn't participate in the games herself, she called the experience "awesome.""I was really irritated that the flight kept getting delayed because I was going for a quick weekend trip to DC to visit friends," she told CNN."Once he started playing games, I was laughing and having a great time and didn't even mind that the flight was delayed."The delay lasted about three hours, Dundas said. But when the flight took off, passengers clapped and cheered for the gate agents."This video is another great example of how we encourage our employees to have fun with customers," Dan Landson, a spokesman for Southwest Airlines, told CNN. 1630

France is imposing nationwide restrictions on how far from their homes people can go and for what purpose as part of the country's strategy to stop the spread of the new coronavirus. French President Emmanuel Macron said that "movements will be very strongly reduced” for 15 days starting at midday Tuesday. He says residents will only be permitted to leave their homes for necessary trips such as going to work or the supermarket. Macron said in televised remarks that the government decided to order the restrictions because people haven't complied with earlier public health measures and “we are at war.” Macron added that any violations from the law will be penalized, without elaborating how. 709
