CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) - Instead of planning for a wedding, loved ones of a Camp Pendleton marine were holding a funeral this Memorial Day weekend.From the moment Kathleen Bourque met Conor McDowell off a dating app last summer in Washington D.C., it was electric."Insane, crazy, passionate ... He has a huge heart and always puts others before himself, and I was really drawn to that," said Kathleen.Four days later, the graduate of The Citadel asked her to move to San Diego as he reported for duty at Camp Pendleton. She said yes. During the cross-country trip, she wondered aloud, 'What are we doing?'""He said, 'Kathleen, trust is a choice ... We're both insane, but at least we're insane together, and give them something to talk about," said Kathleen.Together, they moved into an apartment in Cardiff and their love grew. Just before Conor, 24, left for a 10-day training maneuver earlier this month, he called his mother and told her the engagement ring made with grandma's diamond's was almost ready."He said,'When I return from maneuvers, I'm going to formally propose to Kathleen, I said that's so wonderful,'" said Susan Flanigan, Conor's mother. That proposal would never happen. During an exercise at Camp Pendleton on May 9th, the light armored reconnaissance vehicle he was riding in flipper over, injuring six other Marines and killing Conor.Conor's father, Michael McDonwell, says his son pushed another Marine into the vehicle to safety but couldn't save himself."It's devastating ... He was a person who lived his life to the fullest with great kindness, love and integrity," said Flanigan."I am shattered. My heart has been ripped out of my chest. I was his life and he was mine. I have lost a part of myself in losing him," said Kathleen.This weekend, loved ones held a funeral in Conor's hometown in Maryland. The bagpipes he had wanted for his wedding played instead at his service."He was the strongest person I knew. He taught me how to find the strength I didn't know I even had," said Kathleen.A memorial will be held at Camp Pendleton in early June, before a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — What looks like an asteroid may just be an old rocket from a failed moon-landing mission more than 50 years ago. The newly spotted object is expected to get nabbed by Earth's gravity and become a mini moon next month. NASA's leading asteroid expert thinks it is the upper rocket stage from a 1966 mission. Observations as the object draws closer should help nail its identity. He speculates the object is the Centaur stage from NASA's Surveyor 2 mission, dating back to 1966. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - California Pacific Airlines has canceled all of its January flights in and out of Carlsbad’s Palomar-McClellan Airport. The announcement came after the small airline had already canceled flights from December 21 through the end of the year. CPA launched in November with direct flights to Reno, Las Vegas, San Jose and Pheonix. It had been almost a decade in the making for founder Ted Vallas, who finally opened CPA after taking over a small airline with a fleet of four aging jets. But by December, the problems began. Two of the planes were taken out for repairs, creating several days of canceled flights. Operations resumed for about a week, but a few days before Christmas the cancellations began again causing passengers to scramble to find alternate routes. On Yelp, one reviewer wrote “They canceled my flight last night, and rebooked me to this morning. Then they canceled my flight this morning... on Christmas Eve!! Had to ditch this airline completely and booked a last minute Southwest flight.” Founder Ted Vallas told 10News that all canceled flights will be refunded. He said maintenance issues were still a lingering problem, but they ran into another issue as the holidays approached - a lack of pilots. Vallas said they recently let two of their pilots go. That coincided with two other crews leaving for higher paying seasonal jobs at major airlines. Without enough planes or pilots for all of their scheduled flights, they decided to cancel them across the board at Palomar-McClellan. Vallas told 10News, “Being a scheduled airline and dedicated to this community the North County, it would be better to notify people in advance that we have this pilot problem.” He said they are currently training more pilots and in the process of leasing new planes, but those won’t be available until at least February. Vallas says another one of their planes will be heading in for maintenance during their 30-day shutdown. Palomar-McClellan airport has had a history of failed airline ventures. The most recent was Cal Jet, which folded after less than a year of operations. But big changes are coming. Back in October, the county Board of Supervisors approved a plan to extend the runway, which could help make a business model for an airline more viable. For now, CPA continues to operate out of several other airports. Vallas vows to resume operations out of Carlsbad as soon as possible, but has not yet set a hard date. 2469

(KGTV) - Three boys are recovering from an angry wasp attack at a park in Cardiff.Along Windsor Road, feet from an elementary school, five boys between 7 and 14 years old were inside a private park in the Park Place community two Sundays ago. They were about a 100 feet from the fenceline along Windsor Road. Frank Bocchini's son was the oldest boy in the group."Doing what young boys do, exploring and having fun in nature," said Bocchini.The fun quickly turned into a nightmare."He saw the wasps and told the young boys to stay away from there," said Bocchini.Bocchini's son was the first to see the insects near a tunnel structure. "The wasps reacted quickly after he said that. It was a nest that quickly turned into a swarm...screaming and crying, because they were getting hit," said Bocchini.Three of the five kids were stung, including two 7-year-old boys who were stung dozens of times."The older boys were trying to get the wasps tangled in the young boys' hair," said Bocchini.Bocchini's son and another boy frantically tried to help the other children. "At one point, the whole jacket was covered in wasps on this young boy. He told the boy to take the jacket off and run," said Bocchini.That boy did, and eventually ran out of harm's way."He was upset and scared," said Bocchini. The 7-year-old boy ended up in the emergency room with 24 stings and hives on his body. The incident unfolded as wasp season should be wrapping up. Experts tell us the hot weather has extended the season along with the dangers.The property management company for Park Place confirmed a pest service relocated the yellow jackets. Experts say you should run from wasps, and running through trees and bushes may help slow them down. If you're stung, don't take the stinger out with tweezers.
